That she needs more than 3 shots when you shoot her but is taken down in 3 when an enemy shoots her?

As much as I feel this doesn't need explanation because this game often prioritizes gameplay design over rationality (in a great way), I still don't think it's inconsistent.

Multiple hits during a boss battle are required to essentially kill Quiet. 3 powerful shots from enemies and she's wounded, and pulled out automatically by Miller and the support staff. It's intentionally not the same amount of damage.

Yep.

It's a sucky, half thought out twist.

"You're Big Boss, as long as you're not a female", and how exclusionary that is, almost makes the 'you're Big Boss' twist not worth doing.
I wished after you finished mission 46, not only your avatar unlocks but the ability to make a female avatar as well. When you play as a female soldier you get still called "Boss" around Mother Base and by Kaz so it's not like it matters much.

He did have Kaz in a speedo and there is a gay overtone with snake and ocelot... But his direction with Quiet is disgusting and I wish there was an uproar about it.

Well, I don't think there are gay overtones with Ocelot. I think Ocelot is just straight up gay and is in love with Big Boss.

And it's likely for the better that Kojima has never explored this, only hinted at it.

Every MGS fan should listen to this podcast with Jeremy Blaustein. Quality is amateurish as it was made by fans, but the content is great and Jeremy speaks 100% candidly about working on various Konami games like Snatcher, MGS and Silent Hill 2. Also talks about dealing with Kojima (topical, I guess).

You beat me to it. Do you remember who his late sister/brother used to voice? I'm pretty sure it was a Pokemon.

Perhaps that's still possible, because MGO has a female avatar creator.

Why is someone like this so rare? You don't even need to be a translator to clean up the localizations and direct voice actors. Kojima needs a filter for so many of his ideas on paper.

Should of been in the final game if he wanted to make his point across.

But of course it's not like that's only thing that should of been in the final game if he wanted to make his point across.

Mei Ling was American yeah? So her accent was pretty inaccurate (though not bad necessarily in that case). Never liked Naomi's accent change though :(

It never made sense for Mei Ling to have an accent. She was born in the U.S. Unless she spent her entire life only talking to her parents and grandparents, there's no way she'd have an accent like that

I loved both Mei Ling and Naomi's accents in MGS1 :( I hate that they changed it for 4.

I loved the voice work in the original. Felt like I was taking part in an interactive movie.
To be honest all I heard were characters, not accents.

That was until Twin Snakes, then I wanted my accents back, because after hearing 5 hours of codec conversations Those accents were apart of the characters.

Probably because it gets you fired: the story goes that when MGS: Integral was released with English voice acting, Kojima's translator at the time, Scott Dolph, pointed out the differences between the English script and the original and Kojima was not pleased. In the end, Jeremy didn't return as the translator for MGS2, even though that would've made the most sense.

You can hear all about Jeremy's opinion of Scott Dolph and Kojima in that podcast. It's good stuff.

Meowth, I think.

Having let it sink in a bit more, I hope we get some kind of postmortem someday, just to see what the creative process was, because from the outside, it looks like they had a number of great story beats they wanted to hit, to the point they put them in trailers, and they were left afterwards with the task of giving a semblance of continuum between these moments. That's the part where they really screwed the pouch and we ended up with parasites, ellipses, tapes, filler missions and Skull Face being a farcical villain.
Typically, I love the post-mission 41 cutscene, it's genuinely well written, dark and poetic, tonally fitting but it's a shame it sits at the ass end of the game with no build up or follow up.

i don't think kojima put much thought into anything aside from the gameplay to be honest
Seeing the result, I'd agree but regardless of its poor execution, I'm fairly certain he was proud of his twist as a fourth wall breaking closing statement. If anything, he put too much thought into the twist, ignoring how detrimental it was to an already average and disjointed story.

Maybe they did this to balance the gameplay? I don't see a problem here.
I mean sure, but she's already OP as hell in terms of helping you out on missions, you almost feel like you don't need to do anything when you bring her. They should've either nerf her as a whole or nothing at all.

Yeah, like in prior MGO's.
I play as a female just for the sake of variety, all these soldiers in Mother Base look too similar to one another.

Definitely. It was jarring to say the least.

Though the accent removal is probably the least shitty thing they did to those characters considering how they both were way less interesting in 4.

I wish Kiefer had more chances to say goofy shit so I could evaluate that bit properly. That was always my favourite part of Hayter Snake; he could sound absurdly gruff and then effortlessly segue into talking about his quasi-sexual love of boxes in an instant.

The goofiest thing I've heard Kiefer say is ROCKET PAWNCH and HAIDARAAAAAAA which is, admittedly, pretty goofy. But I needed an extended monologue on some seriously goofy shit.

Speaking of goofy... i don't think i ever saw that goofy face he talked about in that interview.

Damnit...now I gotta scour mother base for a blue door light.

Use spoiler tags if you see Norman Reedus. :)

The tapes are intentional and serve as the optional codec scenes.
Even Peace Walker had them. Peace Walker also had 4 [mandatory] Chapters and an optional 5.

Even though the twist was where Kojima was going I don't think he was focused on it. The ending amounts to 5 minutes of new footage in an hour repeat play through of the prologue. It was him making the core gameplay as free as possible until he was told finish this shit now so he had no choice but to leave out a proper build to the climax.

The fact that the chapter just shows up without any explanation or build up shows he didn't get a chance to create the scenario or boss battle that would trigger the event. Which probably would have been something in Chapter 3 or the [imaginary]4.

I feel like Keifer is undoubtedly a better actor than Hayter, but between the new voice and all the script stuff and what with being an entirely different character, he just doesn't actually feel like Snake at all and I'm just playing gruffman mcgruff with a horn, so the twist was almost entirely wasted on me (though I would've enjoyed it more if Hayter was Ishmael)

Thats one of the times I want to say Fuck Kojima.

Oh... it's ok for Japan to keep their Solid Snake, but for the West, it's ok to make up some shitty BS "darker" excuse when in reality he just fell in love watching Keifer in 24
with subtitles
.

If Hayter was Ishmael it would have made me very, very happy.

They could've liked modulated the voice in the prologue and then made it unmodulated in 46. How bad ass would that have been.

Although that would've fucked up GZ Kiefer. That makes no sense lol.

I dunno, I'm pretty sure you have a fair few Chinese Americans (in like places in San Francisco) who have been here for generations, but still primarily speak Chinese.

I'll take "shit tier" Hayter over mumbling, bored as hell Kiefer ten times out of ten.

Kiefer isn't terrible in TPP, he's worse than that, he's bland.

Oh, and about half the time he actually DID have lines, he manage to screw up intonation.

Thank you. I don't know what people see in Kiefer's performance.

He's definitely not bad or anything, but it's just bland and stale most of the times. I'd take Hayter's energy, ham, gravel and snark over whatever we got with Kiefer.

Then you have people that say the game is to fan service-y and was relying on older, better games lol. As for the Hayter and Keifer debate, I'm siding with Hayter because if people listen to interviews with Hayter he said that he was told to use that Old Snake voice. I mean, his Winter Soldier performance sounds like young snake.

I don't know what some of you guys are on about, but this is definitely akin to the MGS2 Snake voice, he can definitely still do a non-chainsmoking Snake voice. It really seems like shoddy voice direction is the culprit here.

Oh wow yeah that's a solid spot and exactly 22 seconds faster.

I prefer my strat though :P a bit more hilarious.

I can't help but want to fulton all the mission targets.
So I had to hall ass and get into the building before the chopper arrived but you had to do it without alerting anyone or else the chopper would go away. Had to get the arms dealer too.

Just finished. Kinda...really disappointed that so much of the game was given away in trailers. The game started so incredibly and tapered off by the end. I have to gather the rest of my thoughts but right now I'm sadly not feeling it.

Also can't believe they showed the twist via the fucking opening credits in mission 46.

Even the tapes are kind of disappointing honestly, now that I've listened to them all there's only a handful that truly stand out.

- Skull Face interrogates Code Talker (the one with the bell, SF is amazing in this one)
- Paz last tape
- Hamburgers
- Strange Love final message
- "Truth" tapes are all very good, especially the one with Zero
- Some Code Talker tibits are good but drowned by wolbachia/maletofemale/copulation snoozefest

Compared to MGS2-3's optional codec calls it's pretty sad. And the myth that Venom tals a lot more in the tapes it's just that, a myth. It's true that in the first part he has something to say (not much compared to Ocelot and Miller but still), but after the Sahelanthropus speech he vanishes completely.

I remember a neogaf post saying "he doesn't shut up in the tapes" and I was like "what?"
