The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

I don't know to be honest. I got most of the games I wanted when they were new and in 06/07 when prices were at their lowest at GameStop but unfortunately I hadn't heard of Gotcha Force until a couple years ago which by then was too late.

I have it but still need to get around to playing it...I remember when it came out people were all over it.

It was the talk of RPGs at the time since the Game Cube barely got any RPG titles to begin with but when Symphonia arrived it gave us Game Cube owners something that was fun and even unique for the Tales series since it was the first 3D Tales of title. The cell shaded graphics amazed me at the time and fit the style of the game perfectly. It is one of my most memorable RPG games I ever played. Symphonia has an excellent soundtrack with a few remixed song that originated from Tales of Phantasia. Give it a shot when you have some down time. If it clicks for you then you are in for an excellent RPG experience.

What's everyone's favorite third-party game? Mine is a tie between Twin Snakes (don't judge me) and Soul Calibur II.

Killer 7

The game dropped when I was 14, and I still have yet to play anything else quite like it. So surreal, quirky, creepy, and bizarre. Best of all, it's a damn good time. The way the gameplay handles changed the way I thought about gaming in general. No need to wander around aimlessly, just hold A, and let the game guide you where you need to go. Hear the Heaven Smile's laughter: aim, shoot, kill, repeat. Plus, those graphics will never age.

To this day isn't it still the best-performing Tales game of all time in the west in terms of sales?

I like to think we played some small part in that at Nintendo Power. Namco seemed to think we did, anyway.

To show their appreciation for all the coverage (including a cover story), the development team sent us one of those Tales of Symphonia limited edition Gamecubes, signed by key team members. But even though I was the one who wrote the cover story, that Gamecube somehow ended up with one of my colleagues. *Grumble, grumble.*

A lot of great ones have been mentioned, and I'm not sure I'd personally rank it over Twin Snakes, but Viewtiful Joe is one of the GC's best.

The 3d (ie non-GBA) Custom Robo games are the best robot-fighting games I have ever played. They're good games thanks to the great combat system -- as usual with Nintendo, the games are great because of their great gameplay, certainly not for the stories (though that twist near the end of the GC game is interesting). The interaction between the three different weapon types is really key, it's a really great design. And of the Custom Robo games, the GC game is definitely the best one because it's the only one with 3 or 4 player battles, and they're awesome! It's really unfortunate that Nintendo let such a great series die, it should come back.

It takes a while to get going, but has one of the best, craziest, most fun and very pixar-like stories ever to be in a game.

I think of the game as Animal Crossing meets Toy Story meets Wall-E.
The concept of a small robot in a big world is a good one. From the Micro Machines racing game series to Toy Commander on Dreamcast, it's a concept that has been done very well before... but Chibi-Robo isn't one of those games. It's far too boring to be compared to greats like those.

As an aside, Animal Crossing, there's a series I have never played. It looks like The Sims but worse and even more limited, and The Sims is so boringly uninteresting looking that I['ve never played one of those games either; I love SimCity (particularly 2000), but when they changed from a focus on building things to a focus on managing people they lost me.

I do like Toy Story and Wall-E (Wall-E is amazing, and easily Pixar's best movie), but Wall-E didn't have to go plug in every thirty seconds, and the movie wasn't all about him picking up garbage until you get bored and turn it off. :p

That's easy, Skies of Arcadia Legends! That game is absolutely amazing, and is my favorite JRPG ever. Incredible classic.

#2 would be XGRA: Extreme-G Racing Association, because I really love that game. Rogue Squadron II: Rogue Leader would be in third (technically it's not published by Nintendo, even if Factor 5 and Nintendo were close...).

007 Nightfire is probably my favourite third party game on the system. A lot of my love for it is most likely nostalgia though, not a game I'm planning on returning to anytime soon.

Baten Kaitos would come in at second. I guess the first game counts as third party (I know that Nintendo published Origins).

Favourite would be Viewtiful Joe. Just a joy to play though.

Followed closely by
Timesplitters 2
Resident Evil
Resident Evil 4
Killer 7
Viewtiful Joe 2
Sands of Time
Rogue Leader
Monkey Ball 1+2
Twin Snakes

I keep thinking about picking up XGRA and XG3. Never end up going through with it though.

Maybe if I get the rest of my bonus on my next check.

Just secured a deal for Chibi Robo! Hate to say it, but I hope that'll be the last GC game I lust for. This shit is getting more expensive by the hour. I used to love finding my own "hidden gems" but now I gotta worry about cost.

Same here. I was a big fan of XG on the 64, but have never played any of the other games in the series. I've heard good things about XGRA, and it's pretty cheap, so I should try and pick it up one of these days.
Same goes for Freedom Force.

I currently have P.N.03 on its way, since I finally managed to get it for less than $20AUD including postage as I have a few friends who highly recommend that I should play it. Also trying to track down some GBAs and link cables to play Crystal Chronicles with a group of friends. Managed to grab a copy without a manual for $5 last month.

After those top three I mentioned previously, some of my next favorite third-party GC games include Capcom vs SNK 2 EO (one of my most-played GC games that generation!), Soulcalibur II, and Gauntlet: Dark Legacy (I really love Legends and Dark Legacy...). P.N.03, Metal Arms, and the Mega Man Anniversary Collection are after that.

XGRA is the fucking truth. I like it better than F-Zero GX, even.
I thought I might be the only one... but yeah, I also like the game more than GX; that game is amazing, but it's a bit too hard. XGRA is a lot more fun, even if it's a bit easy. XGRA is actually my favorite racing game that generation, if you don't count the 6th-gen versions of San Francisco Rush 2049 since that game is my favorite of all time but I like it best on the N64. F-Zero GX would be next on the list -- it is really, really good, despite its difficulty.

Maybe if I get the rest of my bonus on my next check.
Get them, they're both great games! XG3 plays very differently from the other three XG games, though -- it's basically the Wipeout clone of the series, so it is a highly technical game that will require a lot of skill to master. XGRA goes back to a style much more like the N64 games, so it's a more fun and open game. As much as I like XG3, and it is a pretty good game, I like XGRA (and XG2 on the N64/PC) more, because XG should be XG, and Wipeout Wipeout; each series is better doing what it does best, and not copying another.

Oh, XG3 is best on the GC, and XGRA is best on Xbox, and also really great on GC. The PS2 versions of both games aren't as good.

I picked up pokemon colosseum a few days ago, and I'm gonna buy a pre owned gamecube at some point this week. Any recommendations besides the obvious ones? I'm thinking

Metroid prime 1 and 2
Pokemon XD/Channel/Box
Mario Sunshine
Mario Kart
Sonic adventure/adventure 2/heroes
Paper mario
Baten Kaitos
Metal gear

Probably skip wind waker cos the Wii U version is still good, and the zelda collection runs pretty bad if I remember correctly.

I think I remember renting XGRA back in the day...world needs more futuristic racers.

I remember being excited for the original extreme g back in the day and hiring it from blockbuster as soon as it was released back in 1997 or whatever

Couldnt control it for shit. Huge disappointment. I ended up just holding A and touching the analog stick slightly to make sure I ended up in some sort of correct direction

I recall the sequels having wider tracks though.

I grabbed a cheap complete Japanese copy of Pokémon Box: Ruby and Sapphire with the exclusive memory card and the GBA-GCN link cable. I'm pretty excited as I wanted to get back into 3rd gen Pokémon and needed another GBA-GCN cable for some two-player Zelda FSA and FFCC as well. It was a great deal.

Made a nice pickup this week for some of my most-wanted GCN games.

That "Tome of Eternal Darkness" is a prop Nintendo sent out with review copies of the game. If you open it, the center is cut out to hide the game case. It's pretty neat.

And here's the Gamecube collection as it stands now.

Wind Waker is signed by Aonuma and Smash Bros. by Sakurai. Beyond Good & Evil is signed by Michel Ancel, who also drew this on the inside of the art sleeve:

Such glorious trolling (this was in 2006)!

I'm about to start Tales of Symphonia for the first time, just about 1 hour into it now.

Any advice for a newcomer to the series? This will be my first Tales of... game as well!

Great picks across the board for third party games. Another underrated (and cheap!) pick is Beach Spikers. Pretty fun for what it is. Got it the other day and I'm pretty happy with it overall, even in single player.

Ended up getting an SD Media Launcher on Televator's recommendation. Glad it ended up being the US version.

Yeah, Beach Spikers is great; it'd make my top 10 third-party GC games, in the 7 to 10 spots (I mentioned my top 6 earlier). No Resident Evil or Viewtiful Joe games would be on that list, I don't like those games nearly as much as some people. I mean, they're fine games, but VJ is annoyingly hard, and I've never loved RE games. For me Capcom's best GC games are the Mega Man classic collections and P.N.03. :)

Symphonia is pretty fun. The good news is, if you like it, there are a lot more Tales games out there on various platforms! ... But the bad news is, the games are so similar that if you've played one I don't know if you need to play many more unless you really like the formula... yearly annualized sequel series stuff.

That "The Tome of Eternal Darkness" thing is really awesome! That game is my favorite Gamecube game, so that thing is very cool. I actually have one ED thing besides the game, but it's not exactly in good condition -- it's an Eternal Darkness t-shirt, from E3 2002 I believe. It is a white shirt with a rectangular print on the front with some promo boxart or something (not the final cover). I won it as a prize on another site back then from a guy who went to E3 that year, so it's just a coincidence that I have it. I wore it a lot back then, though, so like a lot of my t-shirts, the right shoulder and top of the back of the shirt has a bunch of holes in it, so I don't wear it anymore (uncomfortable!). Still though, the important part is the print on the front center, and that looks just fine; there's no holes on the front, and it's only slightly faded, if at all, thankfully. I love that I have a shirt for my favorite GC game. I wonder how many of these shirts they made... though given the condition I doubt the one I have is worth much, of course. But I don't have things to just look at them, I didn't exactly keep my baseball cards as a kid in perfect condition either. If I have something like an Eternal Darkness t-shirt of course I'm going to wear it.

I don't buy gaming-related clothing (or toys), I buy games; that ED shirt is actually my only gaming-related shirt. The only other thing I have is a Playstation-logo hat I've never worn and don't plan to; I only have it because someone I know said that if I didn't take it they would throw it away, and I wouldn't want that to happen even to something Sony if I can help it. :p

I never found P.N.03 to be that great, it's alright, but best played in small doses.
It's such a great game! I know it's love-or-hate, but I'm on the love side. It's basically like a third-person shmup; it plays nothing like a third-person shooter, and that's a very good thing in my opinion. I've never cared too much for third-person shooters, but I do like shmups, and it's a fun one. It's easily the best game of the "Capcom 5", though Dead Phoenix looked like the best one initially, before they of course had to cancel the most promising one of their five supposed GC exclusives. (RE4 has great graphics, but I have little interest in the gameplay; VJ is nice-looking but way too hard and I wish it was more of a platformer and less of a side-scrolling beat 'em up; and Killer7 I have never played.)

Viewtiful Joe on Adult mode can devastate you. It made me swear off hard games. None the less, I love that damn game! ...I just leave it on Kids mode nowadays. Fuck pride. Lol!

I like to think we played some small part in that at Nintendo Power. Namco seemed to think we did, anyway.

I remember that cover story, reread that issue tons while waiting for ToS to come out in English. One day I will get one of those Gamecubes.

But yeah I always felt the Nintendo Power thing helped the sales a lot, and then when a few years later they release Tales of the Abyss next to FF12 in the US...it's like...what.

I don't know that I have a good enough TV to take advantage of it.

Shame those HD CRTs lag, otherwise I'd have replaced my CRT without hesitation.

Or a PVM or something, but I doubt I'll ever come across one for a good price.

Glad to see some Extreme G love in here. I picked up XG3 cheap at a yard sale not knowing what to expect, and was blown away by the speed. It's possibly the fastest game in existence, you literally break the sound barrier in game.

The mechanics aren't quite as good as GX though, and the AI spam mines to no end in the latter half. I'd still recommend it to anyone who loves intense arcade racing.

XGRA is good as well, although a bit easy and slower.

Errr...got the SD card loaded and everything.

Now the test:

Fucking nothing, the Gamecube doesn't even recognize the Action Replay disc.

Wow...unless I'm doing something wrong, damn, paypal dispute I guess. :/

EDIT: LOL, my friend blew on the disc, that wasn't even THAT dusty, and it fucking worked. Just like the good NES days!

EDIT2: No matter where the memory card is, or the SD Media Launcher for that matter, it just takes me straight to the Action Replay menu, a long list of games, nothing else, can't do jack.

That it, I'm starting a dispute. I just want the damn SD Media disc, I don't give two cents about Action Replay anyway since I never use cheats.
I just tried the disc they sent me. This happens to me. I cannot for the life of me figure out how get the disc to start as the SD Media Launcher. I have absolutely no use for an action replay disc.

This is very disappointing. I was really hoping to see GBA games in 240p :-/

This is some bulllllshitttt.

Yo...

I just started Timesplitters 2....

#mindblown.gif

Its soooo fun! I hate FPS but damn this is good. Timesplitters 1 was the first game I got on PS2 and hated how weird the controls were but this is damn good. I heard the sequels were great but this was like instantly "i'm going to enjoy this!"

I don't know if this will help out but is the card formatted to the FAT format and only a 2GB card? I don't think SDHC cards work. SD card adapter should be in Slot 1.

I liked TS2 a lot with local multiplayer. Still need to try FP.

The SD adapter is known to be kinda janky. Make sure you are using a non SDHC card. Secondly try to really press the card into the adapter as far in as it can go. Sometimes the card has an issue not making contact with the pins on the adapter. I at first had this problem, but after ensuring the card is very snug inside the adapter, I have no more problems.

If your problem still persists, you may have to open the adapter and put something underneath the circuit board to make proper contact.

From my searches around the net, this is pretty much the cause of almost every issue.

It's an 8 gb micro sd + adapter. Is that the problem?

Can someone point me to a card which they use with better luck? I'd rather trust a Gaffer and not leave it to chance.... to the extent possible.

More than likely. From my experience anything that isn't a 2 GB or smaller non SDHC won't be detected by the launcher code. Please do also take my previous post into consideration.

I've used some 256 MB Sandisk cards and the 2 GB Sandisk Wii branded card.

Thanks for your help, televator and alf717.

Im finally able to post in this thread!! I've been following it since the first page.

Since component output is always a hot topic I did a test comparing GameCube, wii and nintendont. I did this many months ago but I can finally post it here.

Hopefully I'm not breaking any rules by posting this in self promotion. I make no money from this.

https://socksfelloff.wordpress.com/2015/03/15/gamecube-vs-nintendont-vs-wii/

I posted a comment there once about how the gamma appears to be off in the captures.

Also the reason some things "look more detailed" with WiiU upscaling is due to the sharpening filter. However it really over sharpens an image. I can create a similar effect if I turn up my XRGB's sharpness to 3-4 which really doesn't look great.

I posted a comment there once about how the gamma appears to be off in the captures.

Oh really? I don't recall seeing that! What makes you believe the gamma is off? If the gamma is off in all the captures I believe the comparison still stands

Edit: I checked it out and approved your message. Sorry I missed it!

Ah, that's cool. Well what's quite telling to me is the drastic difference in shade on link's face.

The WiiU displays in RGB limited but GC games are YUV2 so that might throw off a capture device.
