The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

On the topic of SD Media Launcher, if I'm supposed to keep it in Memory Card Slot A, then how do I save to a memory card in Slot B? Some games don't read Slot B and then I'm stuck not being able to save...

This is only when I'm playing an ISO off the SDML memory card and not a burned disc.

I've ordered a Xeno GC from eBay and will solder it into a spare GCN sometime this week, so I doubt this will be as big an issue once I'm fully modded. Still, ISOs are very convenient, and I'd like to be able to save my progress somehow...

Thoughts, experience, etc.?

Ah, that's cool. Well what's quite telling to me is the drastic difference in shade on link's face.

The WiiU displays in RGB limited but GC games are YUV2 so that might throw off a capture device.

There's so many variables it would be impossible to show all of them. I totally get what you're saying in both posts and at the end of the day it all comes down to individual preference anyway.

The purpose of the comparison was just to show it under a single controlled environment. Everything runs through the same units under the same settings captured with the same device.

If the Wiiu uses a filter on output everyone who uses nintendont will have the same picture. I'm going to assume the filter is not applied on component out which leads to another comparison I now want to do lol.

After you've launched an app you can actually remove the card from slot A before launching a game and you can tell Swiss to use slot B to search images. That might help you.

The sharpening only applies to WiiU upscaling. 480p is not affected by this. Also, iirc, you point out how WiiU 480p looks washed out in RE4. Im thinking that the upscale process is also affecting the black levels in some strange way. After all Nintendo didn't intend for GC games to be scaled on WiiU.

Anyway the point is that you can't use the same settings across the board and make a fair and equal comparison when black levels are all over the place. In all likelihood you are capturing the wrong color space and/or cutting off black detail or blowing out brightness. You have to be able to adjust capture setting in a manner not unlike calibrating a television.

That's a really good idea. I tried this while using both Swiss (0.3, I think) and the GCOS viper file from a YouTube video.

On the first try with Swiss, the ISO loaded but I only got a black screen when trying to load a save file I forgot that I had. The next few tries to load from Slot B were a no-go.

So I tried using the other GCOS file. At first, switching to Slot B was a no-go, but I was able to get the ISO and save file to load by keeping SDML in Slot A and the memory card in Slot B. It seems the game I was using could read from both slots.

So is there a more recent, stable built of Swiss that I should be using? I'll continue to try to get this to work with what I have at the moment.

There's a Swiss nightly build thread for the most up to date versions. http://www.gc-forever.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=1375

Also, it's been a while since I last used Swiss since I now use Nintendon't, but I think I remember seeing an option in Swiss to emulate memory card saves on the SD card.

That's an SDHC card. That won't work it has to be non SDHC which are always small cards. Most people just have old cards lying around the house and those old cards are non SDHC.

Something like this should work: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000J47W12/?tag=neogaf0e-20

It's not that the SDML has a size limit per say, but old format cards don't really go beyond 2 GB.

Here's another: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000FGNM6I/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I ordered the second one. Thanks for the help. I'll update the thread when I try it out.

Much appreciated!

Did Chibi Robo on GC ever get a PAL release?

Been getting back into Nintendo GameCube collecting. I've always had a soft spot for the GC, and have always been thankful the majority of my games from launch as a young kid survived intact (my SNES and N64 games weren't as well looked after). I have most of the first party gems (except Fire Emblem: PoR, damn that's hard to find) but was wondering what people think of Baten Kaitos Origins, Custom Robo and any other NTSC only games that might be worth snagging should I somehow find a deal?

Speaking of Chibi Robo, I'm thinking about getting the amiibo lol. Not really interested in the 3DS game though; it doesn't look appealing to me.

Yes it did, they are going for crazy prices actually! :)

Made a nice pickup this week for some of my most-wanted GCN games.

That "Tome of Eternal Darkness" is a prop Nintendo sent out with review copies of the game. If you open it, the center is cut out to hide the game case. It's pretty neat.

Wind Waker is signed by Aonuma and Smash Bros. by Sakurai. Beyond Good & Evil is signed by Michel Ancel, who also drew this on the inside of the art sleeve:

Such glorious trolling (this was in 2006)!

these are amazing, damn fine collection. props man!

Looks like the Melee community might end up with an alternative to Datel's SD launcher. Someone is making an SD loader for 20XXTE that would be available for about $12 (sounds like it includes both the memory card adapter and a compatible SD card). Particularly useful for NA/NTSC folks since we have no idea how many Datel has left.

Only thing I'm not sure about is how full-featured that might be. The 20XXTE loader uses a modified Swiss build that might be fine, and you might even be able to just replace that with a standard Swiss build. It also uses a modified Melee save to activate an exploit to use it, rather than the SD Media Launcher/Action Replay disc. I'd guess most GC collectors already have Melee, but if not that's a big downside since Melee is not cheap.

Just thought I'd mention that since there has been a fair amount of talk about SD loaders, and Datel's seems to be the only option right now other than DIYs.

Anyone know a good quality, cheap 3rd party GBA link cable? I'm looking to buy 3 more and the official ones seem to have recently gotten more expensive.

I have used the Nyko one in the past. It works well but the clips are metal (not plastic) so be aware they might mark up your GBA when inserting or removing.

Ugh I need to keep an eye on eBay more often. I missed that great deal posted above but I did just nab kirby's air ride CIB for $28cdn though!

Oh man, I just picked up a copy of Bloody Roar on GC in my fevered quest to buy anything Hudsonsoft ever made.

It's GREAT! I'm really bummed I never played it at the time. Super easy to pick up and play.

Question though... I know the Japanese version has Progressive Scan support, but is there some way to force it in the USA release? It'd look so nice...

Technically Eighting made it.

Since giving up on STGs they have made a lot of B-tier and anime-licensed fighting games, but more recently they did TvC and MvC3.

Damn, how did that seller not know that the component cable alone goes for way more than that?

I had no idea the cables were so crazy expensive until I saw them listed on http://videogames.pricecharting.com/ and then saw the OP of this thread. I just bought one I saw used in a GameStop nine years ago because I had heard they would make Twilight Princess look better on our brand-new HD TV. I rarely used it after that. And my parents said they almost donated all of my old game stuff to Goodwill about a year or two ago. So, yeah, I feel there are probably a lot of good deals slipping by out there because of people not understanding the value of what they have. I think it's even more likely in this case because who thinks of a cable as being extremely rare and valuable? I can't think of anything quite like the GameCube component cable in this respect. Maybe the DreamCast VGA box?

So somebody got a hell of a deal:

So, um... thanks for the idea

Saw this, thought "what's that cable":

Looked at more photos and yep that's a Gamecube d-terminal cable (JP component)

I used bid sniping software just in case but I really didn't need to, both of those bids are me.

Plus you know who doesn't want a JP copy of Dance Dance Revolution Mario Mix?

Will go nicely with my FM. I guess I should region mod either this or my existing JP cube, cause my American one is a DOL-101. I wasn't really ever planning on owning these cables given how ridiculously expensive they are.

Keep an eye out CubeGAF!

That's what I did two or so years ago. I used to have a sweet cube collection but my folks' house was robbed when I was at grad school and they took my purple cube, purple GBP import, bongos, component cables, etc.

I waited for months and found a black launch cube (has the weird line from the side to the eject button before they fixed the mold), 10 games (including all of the REs and 3-4 solid titles), extra controller (wavebird), and component cables. I always just used "Search Description" and checked daily with the eBay app (kept the old one, the new one sucks) so I only saw new auctions and could look though all the garbage easily (i.e. the tons of listings were the word component came up because they were DOL-001s). The one I ended up winning was only ~$180. When I priced everything out I ended up paying $30-$40 max for the cable and it was all in fantastic condition.

Basically when I found that auction I linked to I just searched for silver gamecube and was like, damn, someone made out like a BANDIT.

If you're looking for the D-terminal or component cable I'd suggest patience and looking this way. Anyone who lists it in this type of listing, since they're the type of people who are just selling something similar to moms/pops and grandparents may just throw something out at a garage sale and less like the gamers who are savy/out to make the most money. Just my two cents.
