The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

Ah, makes sense.

I had the Wii version...I rather have the Gamecube version after playing it, lol.

Looks like you get it. lol

Anyway, the Wii version was kinda last minute and was simply mirrored to take into account that the Wiimote would be swung by right handed players.

Playing the GC version on a hacked WiiU is amazing too. Full working widescreen, 480p, and GC controller support.

Low print run because GCN = dead (it came out a week after the Wii launch).

The GC version sold around and maybe over a million copies (mostly in the US) so it didn't have a low print run, but it is true that there are a lot more copies of the Wii version out there, and the GC one is more desirable because it's the original and better version.

obv low compared to the Wii version :D

Nintendon't right?

what's a decent price these days?

that's one of the ones i lucked out with a nearby (long gone) Gamestop years ago, no manual but it was less than $20. really dug it but i got stuck in an early battle & still need to go back, haha

I found it at a used game store. They give decent prices and I picked it up for $40.

Ended up region modding my (orange) JP cube tonight. Was really quite a lot easier than I expected. Mostly the biggest challenge was how small the solder pad is, but it still took under 5 mins once I had the whole thing apart.

God the GameCube has a LOT of screws in it though.

Fire Emblem: PoR... ugh. I got that game back in 2005 when it was new and beat the game on Hard in '06, but that, sadly, is one of my GC discs that stopped working for no good reason, along with SSBM, XGRA, and Soul Calibur II. All of those discs are unfixably damaged even though they don't have any visible problems, you can't see light through tem or anything. I've never understood how a disc can fail like that, but it can -- resurfacing did nothing either. Anyway, I replaced those other three because they weren't too pricey when I got my second copies, but PoR is just so expensive that I never did it, so as much as I'd like to replay the game, I can't. It's annoying. It's a great game though, I liked it a lot. It's not as good as the GBA games, but it is quite good.

Sure it's lower than the Wii version in sales, but it still sold reasonably well on GC, in the US particularly.

Thanks! I managed to pick up a few rare games from this place for a good price like Skies of Arcadia and Earthbound. I wish these store were more abundant like they used to be.

Lucky! The stores around here get so horny for GameCube stuff . It's always eBay prices + a few dollars

If you're anything like me, you had a few screws left over after you put it back together lol.

Also totally off topic but the dvd drives are region free. You can swap a drive from a jp cube into a ntsc cube and vice versa. I don't have a pal cube to check pal though.

D-terminal cable came today, along with the other stuff.

The image looks shockingly clean. I'm really impressed. I can't seem to get gbi ull to work with it though -- anyone else try that?

Welcome to the GC master race. :P

Lots of people seem to have a problem with the ULL variant. Might be some sort of fault of coding combined with slight unaccounted hardware differences.

Maybe. As I understand it, ULL forces the output refresh rate to be far closer to the GBA's native panel refresh rate. I guess I can just use low-latency version, it's still miles better than the normal GBP software.

Weirdly ULL worked fine with s-video+framemeister for me.

Copied from the OP on gc-forever

fixed 480(528)x160/320p viewport
fixed 59.7276 Hz refresh, close to the ideal 59.7275 H
z

This is a very strict and uncommon video output for most monitors/tvs. It makes sense that it works fine on something like a framemeister though.

Oh yeah... Are you using the D terminal cable with the framemeister? I assumed you were since it supports D terminal natively, but maybe you are using a component breakout adapter directly into a TV for all I know. The FM should be aware of non standard refresh rates... It would be weird if there was some sort of exception

So I finalised my deal. I got twin snakes(no manual), windwaker (complete), and twilight princess (complete) altogether for $50cdn. It's my second copy of windwaker so I'm selling it for $30-40. Not a bad deal for $10-20.

Twin Snakes has been climbing in price. I picked it up for $20 a year ago CIB, but I see the same store now has it for $50.

ULL works on my PVM. LL works too.

Shockingly... regular GBI doesn't seem to work... which is fine for me I guess. I am only interested in ULL for serious playthroughs but it'd be nice to have the additional scaling options in some games.

regular GBI is 480P.

Anyone know where I can pick up the White Gamecube controller? I'm referring to the one that launched during the Wii era, not the Smash Bros one for Wii U. Hopefully for a decent price, too. Thanks.

Amazon used to have them, but they may be phased out in favor of the Smash branded ones.

I'm pretty sure they are the exact same as the Smash ones though and not the original controllers, if you're referring to the trigger differences.

Amazon has them new for $57. The prices for new GCN controllers are never going to be as low as the ones with Smash branding at this point. And the Smash ones honestly feel great (and I'm a stickler for this sort of thing having 6 GCN-branded controllers in new condition along with 2 Smash-branded ones) .

Just like how the Wii versions of Pikmin are better than GameCube yet they cost twice as much.

Uh no. Not like that at all. You get Link properly left handed, the entire game world un-mirrored as it was originally, no waggle controls, and before the WiiU backwards compatibility it was the version with best picture quality.

On a separate note: I still prefer the GC controller on Pikmin, but at least the Wii version forgoes waggle.

Thanks for the response, guys. Just a preference to get the one with the GCN branding, really. That's all.

Rad. Opened up my copy of Metroid Prime 1, and it's the 1.0 version. I rebought it after stupidly selling it back when Trilogy came out. The GC version is absolutely the way to go with this game.

controls aside, how exactly are the wii ports of pikmin the best ones? #240p4LYFE

the wii version of the original Pikmin lets you switch pikmin types with the d-pad while throwing (like in Pikmin 2). I haven't played the NPC version, but I imagine that's a pretty major boon to playability.

What's the advantage of having 1.0? Speed runs?

I assume you meant NGC? Anyway, ergonomically speaking, the Wiimote is a nightmare for me. Ports like Pikmin and Metroid on Wii gave me hand cramps. No comparison to the GC controller's ergonomics. So "boon to playability" is relative. However I do commend those games for proper pointer controls and for not resorting to a waggle fest like Zelda.

If the Wiimote didn't force my hand into eagle claw positions then pointer controls would have been a real revelation.

No, NPC = New Play Control, the name of the GC --- Wii ports line. I probably should've kept the terminology consistent :s.

I wasn't talking about the control scheme itself, but rather a gameplay tweak made to the NPC version of the original Pikmin. Pikmin 2 lets you select which Pikmin type you want to throw by holding A and tapping left or right on the dpad. The NPC version adds that to the original game, so when you want to, for example, blow up a wall, you can just hold A and select the bomb-carrying Pikmin, rather than separate your pikmins and whistle the ones you want to throw. It's not that major, but it's pretty beneficial to the flow of the game.

I just had an idea In my head and Thought I would try it.

Turns out re2 and 3 output at 240p perfectly!

I have the itch to replay them but I was torn between gc performance or ps1 scan lines. Now I get both!

Why tho? The GC and DC versions perfectly render @ 480p without compromise and there's no prominent 2D material that hugely benefits from scan lines.
