Street Fighter V Roster Discussion: P-P-P-P-PATTERN BREAKER

Only 1 returning character left and Brazil reveal is a new character.

I'm setting myself up for maximum disappointment, to lessen the eyerolls until the roster is set. Something like: Surprise! More than 16 characters, are you excited?!
The additional characters are Blanka, Dhalsim, T Hawk, are youuuuu excited? SHAHYOUKEN

From a gameplay perspective, they seem to have done a lot of interesting things with him. I like it :)

From a visual perspective, he looks exactly the same as he always has. Not that his deafult look is bad but I'm not a fan of the way some characters got updated and some look like they stepped out of the 90's. I'm not sure I totally understand the rationale. Why update Ken but keep Zangief or Chun-Li EXACTLY the same?

From a character perspective, Alex or Urien would have been more interesting to me since we haven't seen them in a good while. I have no beef with Zangief but he isn't like a beloved character to me. I would have rather see Capcom tap into the well a bit than bring back character X for the 4614636134 time (at least on the starting roster).

Last time we saw Zangief: a Disney movie.

Last time we saw Alex: a remote background ad in SF4 that was barely visible.

Yeah, son, Zangief would outsell Alex. They gotta sell the base game first, cannot fill it with obscure characters from SF3. Gotta put GOOD CHARACTERS in there.

They know there's a hardcore fanbase for SF3 that will buy their DLC eyes closed so it's win win.

By that logic explain the 4 Street Fighter Alpha characters in the game :P

What???? Projectiles have always been super hard to deal with as Gief. The tools they give him to avoid them are lackluster or cost meter, and thats by design.

Where are you getting this idea that his options to nullify projectiles cost meter? None of that is in the trailer. His standing headbutt is not an EX move. His armored normals are not EX moves. His lariat is not an EX move. All of these either stuff projectiles or absorb hits.

Yeah, because an occurrence that happened 5 times in a row is totally not a pattern. Ono just chose to break the pattern now.

You'd have to argue that you think Ono actually is cognizant of such a "pattern."

I don't think that's the case.

I mean, you think Ono honestly believes there's a set structure to how and why he teases bullshit on twitter?

I don't think there's a playbook or anything. It's not as simple as looking at what he's done the last few months and then extrapolating some sort of structure out of it. Teasing shit on twitter probably isn't a very big concern for him, certainly not enough for him to create, much less adhere to, a single strategy regarding who and how he teases.

Ono wins another round of dashing peoples expectations

Now he'll return to his concentration lair to think of his next move. . .

So, is there a stage show for the Mexico event this weekend? I'm hoping against hope we get another reveal. Make it Dhalsim so we can rip off the band-aid now.

I'm into the Juri hype train, so let's ride that disappointment out.

I guess they will start talking early about DLC characters and which time periods we can expect them (1 every month or every 2 months, I think).

Probably because Ken wears the exact same thing as Ryu, just red. I'd expect Akuma or Sean to get a similar makeover just to avoid having four gi guys in the game. In the way that most of the ninja in MK started getting redesigns so they wouldn't just seem like palette swaps.

The Alpha series was way more popular than the 3 series back then. They were just bringing the Alpha people who didn't appear in SF4. Except Sodom, who's yet to appear on a 3D game.

I remember I heard Tokido did a setup on Alioune like 70 times in casuals... than in an actual tournament instead of crossing up he faked crossup'd from that setup and blew him the fuck up.

Ono's mixup too strong for you.

Well, looks like the best SF starting roster just went down the drain. Going to get ready for Sim so I can blow my brains out when he's revealed.

Expect a skin to deal with that. Wise Zangief protecting Russian Seas.

Trust in Ken Bogard. (and the absurd unlikelihood of two Indian characters / 3 to finish the roster out.)

Seriously, relax. You don't see me getting bent out of shape over Zangief. Disappointed, but not salty.

Well, I still have a good feeling about Alex anyway. I think it might be better to stay disappointment because it would feel so good when we see Alex become playable character either way! :)

There's one more returning slot. It could be Urien, Alex or Ingrid. Probably Akuma, Sim or Sagat though.

I hope this is true because that's fucking awesome.

The thing is 3S character fans are hardcore Street Fighter fans by default who were going to pick up V anyway. Gief is in to attract casual fans as they would more likely recognize that character. So Alex makes more sense as a character people would pay extra for.

Also 3s fans aren't gonna be happy anyway because the game isn't 3s.

See the problem with your posts is that you treat these patterns as rules and then bring down any posts that goes against these rules you've created. I don't think it's totally unreasonable to notice patterns and then make calculated guesses based off of them. It's part of the fun of speculating as Bobby said. But they should never be treated as if it's they're 100% guaranteed which you tend to do a lot.

Even I brought up the pattern in part of my reason for expecting Rashid at Dubai but I never treated it as fact. I just made what I presumed to be a reasonable guess based off a bunch of factors.

My impression is, Ono wants to revise every character , but that will take it too far from original one and might not serve the purpose of using iconic character in the game to draw general audience attention. Hence it ends up with character with no change, character with some changes, and character that get fully changed. It seems that learn from SF3 that using just small amount of iconic character while the rest of the roster are totally new might not be a good thing. With that reason only, I would totally understand why they keep Zangief this way. His dress is very iconic and that's the point of inlucding him in this game. Ken on the other hand is already similar to Ryu , so i'ts more safe to do some changes with him. Hell, I even imagine that Ryu (and other) alternate costume might be what they want to do originally with the character revise.

Seeing as Capcom hate every character that isn't from 2 and Alpha, my next hope is that the last remaining classic slot is Guile. He'd probably bring my hype back up. If it's Sim then just fuck everything.

ONO DOES NOT HAVE A PATTERN!
That is crazy talk, you make it sound like Ono is some evil twitter mastermind genius, and the fact that he KNOWS he made a pattern.
He's just some Japanese guy who likes to hype his games with vague twitter images just for the sake of hype

Gief is the best returning character from SF2

Well to me it's claw and gief for this game.

^^^^betcha its sim
