The thing about him asking students to state their religion, I wonder what answer he was looking for?

Wasn't this similar to another mass shooting in America where the shooter did the exact same thing or am I thinking of a movie?

Is it the reason that some people want to murder 12 people in cold blood?

It can.

I don't know enough yet about the current shooting to say one way or another, but Elliot Rodgers and the Louisiana theatre shooting suggest feelings of failed masculinity can be a contributing cause of people violently lashing out at society.

I'm not saying it's always the cause, but it has been. But aside to that, I don't think the idea that feelings of masculinity fueling gun ownership is an insane suggestion.

Yep, I live in Alabama and i regularly hear that if "the guns are taken away" they WILL kill the president. Those people will not give up their guns

so take away the guns. what are they gonna do, yell that the gub'mt is taking their guns?

the NRA is the real problem

Columbine myth: "do you believe in god?"

Some people here are getting really, really upset with the consideration that feelings of insecure masculinity may inform the purchase, advocacy, and carrying of weapons.

Geo apparently touched a nerve with his post. Maybe it's more trenchant than you thought.

His post made a lot of sense. I'm certain that a venn diagram of gun owners would have significant overlap with individuals who identify as "manly men". Whether their guns are just for protection or for hunting, both of these activities fall in line with that concept.

CNN: on social media he warned about it.

In the next 24 hours we're probably going to get a really good idea as to whether this is going to become the aspect of the story the newsmedia will choose to latch onto for discussion generating purposes on their social media arms. And if it does, the focus so far as potential legislation stemming from this will likely be in that direction.

It's easier to act tough on trolls than it is to act tough on gun manufacturers and lobbyists.

4CHAN is fucking stupid...reading that thread...jesus christ. Bunch of subhuman filth

To be fair, the amount of false threats posted on that site every day on various boards numbs you to them. When you see a mass shooting threat every day or so, and none of them come to fruition, you just assume they are all power fantasies.

I have absolutely no doubt. 4chan in particular is going to cop a smashing, especially if a journalist gets on /b/ and just sits there and watches it for an hour.

The 4chan stuff absolutely makes me lose faith in humanity.

It's easy to think that there aren't THAT many psychos out there... and then you find such a large gathering of them in one place at one time and you just...

... I'm not even angry. I'm just sad.

They cheered him on and celebrated him when the news about the attack rolled in. Look into the archived thread.

How many people are going to have to die before the law makers in that country wake the fuck up? Jesus christ.

Edit: 45 school shootings this year? America pls.

4chan should be nuked from orbit.
They should try and find any of the fuckers who encouraged him and gave him suggestions on targets.

If gun people are so pro life, then doesn't the one or two lives saved count with gun control versus not? I know if I ever lost my shit I wouldn't be able to get one "off the street," due to my social anxiety and lack of knowledge where to go. I can't even get weed and I'm always down to hit that when it presents itself.

You see. Guns save lives. If those six year olds were packing heat there would be no Sandy Hook.

If this is not about guns but mental illness, as some would have us believe, why are these massacres not happening in Europe?

Or is it only Americans who suffer with mental illness?

Well, I don't think it's just about mental illness, but mental illness in America is covered poorly under the same terrible system that covers our health, except it's treated even less seriously. Most people who suffer from mental illness have a difficult time affording both their professional visits and their medications. In addition, more and more psychiatrists are refusing to accept any insurance at all.

Again, I don't think it's just about mental illness (or even primarily about it) but you there are good reasons why the mentally ill in America have such a hard time getting treatment.

Does anyone know what Chads, Stacies, and Normies are?

Chads = alpha males who get all the girls, leaving whiny little 'nice guys' in the dust
Stacies = the 'slutty girls' that go after the Chads and ignore the 'nice guys'
Normies = people who have 'normal' social interactions with people. People over on the reddit 'Forever Alone' group throw this term around to talk about the people who have romantic relationships

All of these terms are tossed around by 'nice guys', who in reality aren't very nice at all.

Does anyone know what Chads, Stacies, and Normies are?

from the looks of it chads and stacies are the popular preppy people these kids think are the bane of society and ruin all their social interactions. I think normies just applies to everyone not in their little group

Sadly it'll take a shooter that is white, male, proven sane via examination, who clearly states that his only motivation was that he believes there is a lack of proper firearm law and enforcement of current law to get any level of conversation or reform apart from deflecting the issue of the firearms themselves.

Also for reference, /r9k/ is like /b/ where it's an "anything goes" board but it has a bot to ensure duplicate posts don't occur. It's flooded with Pepe / Sad Frog / Feels Guy posts and journal entries from maladjusted people, among other things. "Normies" are normal people, those that /r/obots feel live life's of normalcy and contentment, while they can't or choose not to conform. A lot of the posts are usually about lamenting how they wished things were, being too awkward to get laid, etc.

The whole board isn't like that of course, but a lot of the more famous posts / threads are of that nature.

This is horrific, and it's a shame that I wanted to write "as usual" after that.

On the issue of gun control, I think there's plenty of room for reforming and increasing the control of firearms. I think there's very little chance of banning firearms -- such little chance that I don't think it's particularly worth discussing unless you can show some evidence of a groundswell of support that would lead to an amendment.

That said, gun control is entirely on the table. Most responsible gun owners already support stronger control measures, even though they are rejected and lobbied against by the NRA. The first step is to call on responsible gun owners to take their voice back from the NRA and to repudiate their extremist views on firearm ownership.

Beyond that, the focus should start with funding and rolling out an easy to use, national, required background check network. Close the loopholes that allow non-reporting. Levy serious fines for entities that don't fulfill their obligations to report, including mental health facilities, hospitals, gun stores, police departments, etc.

And if you're serious about doing something, let me direct you to a number of sites who would be happy to have your work and your money, to lobby on your behalf:

http://americansforresponsiblesolutions.org/
http://csgv.org/
http://everytown.org/
http://faithsagainstgunviolence.org/
http://smartgunlaws.org/
http://momsdemandaction.org/
http://www.vpc.org/
http://www.bradycampaign.org/

You should be able to find a group that fits you, unless you just don't support any sort of gun control at all. Funding and working for these groups may seem like beating your head against a wall, but it's more effective than continually having the same argument about banning guns, ad nauseam.

Just an FYI Brady campaign had a family sue lucky gunner for selling ammo to someone legally that later went on to kill people. They lost the case and abandoned the family with a 300k bill from the lawsuit.

A gun ban, at this point would be pretty much useless. The criminals already have guns, the militias already have guns, the crazies already have guns, the country is flooded with guns and a gun ban would be inneffective.

A buyback program would be a joke
Sending federal agents to confiscate guns would result in a civil war.

We made our bed and now we must lay in it.
