I have absolutely no doubt. 4chan in particular is going to cop a smashing, especially if a journalist gets on /b/ and just sits there and watches it for an hour.

No doubt whatsoever.

Off-topic but that suicide newsgroup on usenet is no longer available on Google Groups after a young lady was encouraged to end her life. Not that it hadn't happened before, but I think that was the straw that broke the camel's back.

This is such a big reach, how is this a good post? I don't know what to say.

Where are your studies to back this all up, because it all makes zero sense to me.
As a male that admittedly bought his first gun in part because I thought it was cool and just what men did here in the south, yeah, I think there is plenty of truth to it. A ton actually. If you are gonna hide behind needing a neatly presented research paper(of which I'm sure you would just poke holes in anyway) then these sort of speculative posts aren't for you.

Come down here to Louisiana for a weekend and I can introduce you to a ton of men who will gladly beat their chest about how their guns protect their family. A responsibility because they are the man of the house. Talk about their new guns with the sort of dick measuring vernacular that you often hear when arguing sports. How cool they feel telling a girl at a bar how they protect themselves and others with their piece. How alpha that shit makes them basically. Hell you see it here. I remember the last time this conversation came up we just had to have a couple posters pound their chest about needing to buy more ammo and basically trying to act all hardass about their gun collection and the fucks they could give for anyone pushing back against them.

It is an extremely compelling hypothesis. One that is compelling because we can in fact identify in gun culture an expression of the more universal male traits that seem to emerge in most human cultures.

Chads = alpha males who get all the girls, leaving whiny little 'nice guys' in the dust
Stacies = the 'slutty girls' that go after the Chads and ignore the 'nice guys'
Normies = people who have 'normal' social interactions with people. People over on the reddit 'Forever Alone' group throw this term around to talk about the people who have romantic relationships

All of these terms are tossed around by 'nice guys', who in reality aren't very nice at all.

What does this have to do with a massacre?

Hey guys, I just had an interesting idea. Why don't we invent a machine that can kill humans beings really really easily, then regulate it really poorly and let just about anyone own whichever kind they want? Wouldn't that be great?

His post made a lot of sense. I'm certain that a venn diagram of gun owners would have significant overlap with individuals who identify as "manly men". Whether their guns are just for protection or for hunting, both of these activities fall in line with that concept.

The problem, though, is trying to correlate "gun ownership" with "mass murderer". What turns someone who wants to own a gun to feel "more like a man" into someone who wants to murder many people? That's the real issue because there are millions of gun owners who are responsible and don't murder 12 people. Who cares why I want to own a gun? I care about what drives people to mass murder.

A gun ban, at this point would be pretty much useless. The criminals already have guns, the militias already have guns, the crazies already have guns, the country is flooded with guns and a gun ban would be inneffective.

A buyback program would be a joke
Sending federal agents to confiscate guns would result in a civil war.

We made our bed and now we must lay in it.
Australia made it out fine.

This is disturbing...

The shooter posted on a section of 4chan that uses these terms.

God. Wolf Blitzer is such a dope.

"Wait. Hang on, Person X. We are getting some new information...let us take a break. Stay with us."

Something would be hard so the answer is to do nothing and let it continue? What sort of defeatist attitude is this? Especielly when innocent lives are at stake.

People always frame this idea of reducing supply in such black and white terms. Either nothing or we go in by force and remove guns. There are other ways that lie in the middle of those two options people.

crazy that those military analyst went on CNN and talked about having more guns and less gun free zones......

it's all about money. money money money money. when will someone hack into these gun manufacturers emails and expose how much they pay these people to talk like this?

It wouldn't solve the problem on day 1 or day 100, but EVENTUALLY the number would trickle lower and lower and there would be a cultural shift. If it takes 30 years, then fine. Gotta take that first step eventually.

They have people going on tv and saying this bullshit already? FUCK

Just an FYI Brady campaign had a family sue lucky gunner for selling ammo to someone legally that later went on to kill people. They lost the case and abandoned the family with a 300k bill from the lawsuit.

Do you have any articles that actually claim the Brady Center abandoned them?

That article is very inconclusive; it also mentions an appeal.. if you are appealing a decision you don't immediately have to pay things off.

The post in question is blaming gun violence on masculinity and implying that men who love football, for example, is an inherent problem with society. It's a gross oversimplification of the issue of mass shootings.

seems to me you are oversimplifying geo's post.

America is weird as hell, this happens like once a month or something and yet nobody bans guns. What is wrong with that country

Edit- is this shit legit?

It shows what kind of mentality this guy had. Preoccupied with not getting feminine attention. It's a pretty common white guy shooter stereotype at this point

Which ties back to what Geo posted. Socially awkward manchild buys into the values of toxic masculinity but receives none of the things the men in his family who raised him got, a broken system that fails to treat mental health with the seriousness it needs does nothing about this, and a cultural fetish and weak background checks allow him to buy a gun and commit another mass murder in a country where mass murders are as common as the sun rising in the east.

While true, I feel like they would've said if he wasn't...

I don't think so in this situation. The off the grid nature of the school has basically had the news networks grasping at the same straw for a while.

If they had any solid information they would be running with it.

Thanks.

But that sort of completely goes against your "the Brady Center had them do it" aspect; the Brady Center and another law firm offered bro bono legal support.

The couple were the one's behind the law suit and they claim nobody asked them to sue.

The law says we are responsible for these fees, which we recognize. We do not have the money to pay this amount. The Judge insinuated in his order that Brady should pay since he said they were the instigators. If this was a ploy designed to give the appearance that Brady was responsible and turn us against each other, it did not work.

Brady is still fighting for us pro bono and we see no evidence that the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence will not help us raise funds if and when that time comes.

More:

http://blogs.reuters.com/alison-fra...-parents-drop-appeal-owe-ammo-dealers-203000/

Stoever said whatever the Phillipses pay to the defendants “will come out of their own pockets,” not from the Brady Center, which, according to him, never pushed the Phillipses to sue. “The Brady Center provided legal support,” he said. “It was not ‘behind’ this lawsuit.”

Basically I don't think the Brady Center deserves a black eye for giving pro bono legal support; framing the story as if they used those people is just false.

the rich and powerful have very effectively manipulated poor white people into voting patterns that benefit entrenched oligarchies. they did this by encouraging base fears about the encroaching modern world and its immoral social ideals, and tying that to economic policies.

at this point the monster feeds itself and isn't really controllable anymore. gun rights are part of that culture of fear.
