We have no clue HOW they're making this story though. We only know that Scarjo is playing the lead ... for all we know they're going the Edge of tomorrow route. For all we know they're telling the story in the same world as GITS but from a different location and pov and a different team of characters.

That's why people need to chill. By all means EoT seems like the route I'd assume any American Made manga movie would logically want to go other then Camron's never-gonna-happen movie

Anyway keeping the Japanese names in the adaptation would be pointless because the target mainstream audience doesn't know or care about the original source material enough for it to matter, they just want to see Scarjo be badass and hot with random scifi.

Also why the Akira Hollywood adaptation with Japanese names is dumb.

The fact that she kept her name, the fact that she primarily seems to choose female bodies (I haven't actually seen her in a male one) shows that her nationality and gender are aspects of her identity that she could easily change, but chooses not to. That they're parts of her she deems important and that she tries to at the very least maintain so that she doesn't start to forget who she is

The name thing could just be convenience, so everybody doesn't have to learn a new name for her. But yeah, I don't actually know.
 
After seeing Edge of Tomorrow turn out better than the original story (Still had some stupid stuff in it though) I actually have some degree of faith in this. I do also think the body does not matter too much since Mokoto doesn't exactly look distinctly asian to begin with, they could easily get away with it.

Unless it ends up like Under the Skin and
ScarJo ends up pulling her body off revealing a Japanese woman underneath.

I don't think people want Rinko necessarily, but she's a recent Japanese actress that appeared in a big sci-fi American movie. They're suggesting her because, you know, hey why not get a Japanese woman to play a Japanese woman? Should other female asian suggestions come forward, that's even better.

Funny when people say she has no star power but that's who a bunch of people have suggested in response to the whitewashing.

the star power shit is bullshit

they made the movie 21 and white washed the main characters and put the fucking lead as Sturgess who barely had any "star power" at all.

They're only suggesting her cause that's the only Asian women they can think of ... they're not thinking about the fact that she can't speak English well enuff to head a movie nor the fact that she's never played a character like this.

So yeah, like I said earlier ... I find that just as racist as what they're projecting on the casting. She can't do it in English well, never played this kinda character like Scarjo has, doesn't even look the part beyond being Japanese ... but she's a better pick for an American GITS movie just cause she's Japanese.

As we can see Japan doesn't care much at all about her not being Japanese so if this were really for "Asian Women" in movies then why not pick an Asian American women to toss around on this non-sense protest pics?

All the more reason to cast a proper Motoko, instead of settling for the "only Asian actress i can think of", like some are doing.

Just because some Gaffers don't know them, doesn't mean there aren't other Japanese (or if you want to do it in English, Asian American) actresses to cast.
I think Rinko is a bad choice, but it's not like failing that, you have to immediately fall back on a white woman.

Id rather the movie be a success than adhere to a particular race. Scarlett puts butts in seats.
 
ScarJo is playing a character that is naked 90% of the time and people are complaining.

I always wondered when Hollywood would look to anime and manga. There have been a few small endeavors, but I feel it is really an untapped source considering there is a huge variety of genres. The number one issue of course is adapting it to a western audience aka whitewashing. If the film is good enough, I think a lot of people won't mind or care, but it is certainly an easy point to criticize.

It's an American made film ... of course it will have to be in English. Sooo now we need someone who can act in English, right? Well, the amount of Women who can head an action flick these days aint too high to begin with. Add to that the desire for this woman to be Asian American? That can tots happen! I mean .. if it's an IP like SW where the brand is so big they can leverage testing things like not-very-well-known talent (like making the MC a Chocolate British man).

This is a manga/ anime and that's like the nitchiest thing you can base a big budget film on. They need something to get the money people on board and Lucy Liu is the best bet for American Asian Female star power that I can think of ... and she's too busy with TV to be the head of a big movie (among other reasons).

So yeah, they go after the best bet you can have for a smash hit Female Action movie ... Scarjo (the woman whose "brand" made Lucy a hit that's more successful than any of the Avenger's post "Avengers" non-Marvel flicks in 2014).

If this was a big brand on it's own (like a hit YA novel or a SW level ip) then yeah, I can see the logic behind thinking it's a possible testing ground for Asian Women. But it's not. The movie is being sold to investors on the back of Scarjo as a Scarjo Movie just like EoT was sold on the back of TomC as a TomC Flick.

If they're smart they will either pull a EoT where they change the characters and settings and such but use the basic story and lore ... or they tell the story of a different character in that world from a different PoV that Western viewers can relate to ( I honestly think part of the reason it's taken Scarjo so long to agree to this may just be the story).

I have no idea, the number won't be very high probably. Still, it is not hard to find Asian actresses that are more popular than the Pacific Rim girl. She is quite disliked.

Yeah and for the majority of the time she's naked she's invisible cuz her camo is integrated into that particular body's skin. Does her combat Body even have nipples and genitalia?

Yeah, what the story going to be and how complex it's going to be is probably the #1 concern then rather Johanson fits with the role. Michael Mann would have nailed down the everyone-appearing-doing-and-talking-professional-and-serious-stuff down, at least.

I'm fairly certain that if a press release came out stating that Scarjo is playing "Major Molly Kowalski , a character inspired by Motoko Kusanagi in the US GITS remake" i doubt there would be an issue. But if they are going to use the original name why not get an Asian American actress.

Even worse are people attempting to justify it with shit like "well she looked White in the anime" or " she's a cyborg anyway so she could be White". I can understand the whole "They want a bankable star
in the role" rationale. But even then that doesn't gurantee this movie will be a success.( In fact looking at who is directing it it will likely be a shitpile of a movie.)

Hollywood is so fucking afraid of new faces when it comes to movies that they would never cast an "unknown" for the role, as opposed to another futuristic Scarjo action flick. Funny when you look back at District 9 a movie shot on a modest budget with mostly unknown actors at the time becoming as successful as it did. But that movie had a good Director and writer for it.

I can only hope they have sense enought to change the names of the characters like they did in Edge of Tomorrow

The series and the movie are quite different, though. I'm not a specialist in the former, but the latter is short, quite slow (with a few intense action scenes) very atmospheric, and very existential. Big emphasis on philosophical dialogue/monologues. The series seems more mainstream and action-based.

If you really like the 1995 movie, feel free to watch the pseudo-sequel (Innocence: Ghost in the Shell 2) but keep in mind it's even more slow and weird.

Nudity in the movie is not that prevalent, and really not that sexy at all.
The nude scenes build Motoko's character as one detached more and more from the human world and its conventions, and they twisted the sexually charged content that was in the manga and made it much more interesting removing any "sexyness" while keeping the nudity.
When she isn't naked more over, she has pretty normal clothing.

In SAC on the other hand she's dresses with a swim suit 90% of the time, and it's a constant collection of tits shots and ass shots.


So to me it depends what they'll be going for, with this one; needless to say, i hope for the former.

Again, they don't need a massive budget for this movie, and they don't need a big name for the lead.
This is why i think it most likely won't end up being that interesting, GitS is not much about the spectacle at all, and doesn't need a 100m dollars of budget to work.
Besides, you could have Batou be the one doing the heavy lifting in that sense, sincce Hollywood it's full of big white guys you could cast as him.

i certainly won't like if they'll ever make a vagabond movie with an american actor, that's for sure but for motoko? she looks anime, not asian.

I would love to see these White people that look like anime characters. I would think in all my years i would have seen one if they existed.
 
Still have doubts Hollywood is gonna pull this off.

Probably gonna be 90-120 minutes of Transformer-like explosions, special effects and bad jokes because that is what sells in American cinemas.

No doubt about it. They won't pull it off. Look who's directing, they already lost the game. Too bad the Wachowski's couldn't direct it. It would at least have a chance of being remotely watchable.

Yes, they were the issue of the whitewashing. But that movie didn't need to get its starpower from Sturgess. GITS doesn't have a second huge lead actor cast.
 
I'm assuming its not going to follow nuance of the first movie(where the real acclaim comes from) and they are gonna instead make it a standard sci fi flick about scarlet johanson being 'badass black widow as a robot" type thing, being semi naked as much as possible.

Even the manga was just typical Nightow schlock with an excuse for his typical fanservice.

Oishii really made it his own by turning the fanservice aspects as well as many of the "action" concepts that had no real introspection in the source material on their heads. The androids being purely robotic have no appeal.
