Street Fighter V Roster Discussion |Thread 2| Deal with it & place your hope for DLC

6 WW
6 returning from previous and not in sfiv
4 new ones would have been great

This is basically what I had in mind for returning characters when SFV got announced too. Six WWs, three from the Alpha series, two from 3s and then one that was new in SFIV.

We've had the dreamcast sales charts linked before- SF3 sold miniscule amounts relative to other Capcom fighting titles on the console. It wasn't just "everything going down" - things weren't great, but SF3 was really, really bad, even relative to the others. Taking the lesson of "don't replace the majority of the cast on the initial roster" isn't a bad lesson to take away from it.

I have argued that SF3 was a pretty unpopular game when it came out and found it's audience later, but I don't think that the roster reboot is the primary reason for it. I think the playstyle for the game was very different than what had been seen prior and I think a got of people found that off putting.

That's not to say putting Chun Li and Akuma in New Generation wouldn't have been a bad idea but even after 3rd Strike came out it still felt like it took quite a while until people really warmed up to it.

There're a lot of reasons why SFIII is unpopular, but the main reason is arcades and 2D fighting games in general "dying". For istance, I could never get to play SFIII until some years ago, when I emulated it.

That said, I think there's a lot of underdog fanatism around the title. I honestly don't think the cast is that good and, in my opinion, the game has aged badly. There's a lot of nostalgia when people talk about SFIII. Not saying the game is bad or anything like that, but it's not the second coming of Jesus and the cast is not plain better than that of SFII (In fact, I think it is vastly inferior, both from a gameplay point of view and from their design).

I still would like to see some SFIII chars in SFV sooner than latter.

I wouldn't be surprised if we got Alex & Urien within the first few months as DLC, honestly. The SFV roster is looking to have a distinct lack of SFIII & IV characters which could easily be rectified via DLC.

Anything else new? I've been travelling all weekend and basically missed everything from thursday on, outside of hearing about people reading too much in to a tweet

Not much, really. We got an official Laura teaser tweet, but that's it.

Uriens brother joins smash

nothing really been quiet since the leak

If we get Urien, we may get Gill eventually.

I doubt it. He's not very popular of that great of a character. He and Seth both suffer because their designs were conceived to show off new technology foremost and then came up with a character afterwards.

If Urien gets in they'll add Gill eventually for sure. Two DLC for the price of one, just like the twins and Decapre.
They are taking the "story" route in this game just like MKX so if story wise it doesn't make sense for Gill to be there he won't be.....unless later on they decided to go with a Dream Match like Character Releases.

And Makoto/Ibuki were supposed to be toddlers in 4, Gen was supposed to be dead several times over and Gouken wasn't supposed to be just pretending to be dead

Capcom will just retcon shit as they see fit ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Need a memory refresher: what day was Laura supposed to be revealed at BGS this week? Was it this Friday, or earlier than that?

Hey now I'm only saying by their own words they are taking story Mode "seriously" this time not that rooster in SF4 made sense.

Capcom taking the story seriously doesn't mean they have to take the lore seriously.

Just look at Nash
I will hold my judgment on Nash until the game actually comes out to see what's Capcom's lore reason for him being present. Personally I would like to see Eagle added simply because he only appeared in 2 Street Fighter games so far.

Pursuing you with that apathetic look on his face.
I would like it if they aged him a bit in V. IIRC he's way older along with guy and Haggar, than the sf cast normal. Chun li looked up to the guy, maybe give him some more stubble give him some longer hair, make him look a bit rough
I never realized how menacing he looked. Dope.
I kind of wish they played up the fact that cody is kind of a mean dude, he went to jail because he wouldn't stop fighting people. He broke out of jail to fight people, he's kind of an asshole. Regardless of original intent. And blames his jailing on people betraying him rather than him being an asshole.
His v-trigger is just him breaking his handcuffs and going supersaiyan

He doesn't have to break em, he can just take em off, they aren't locked

I mean unpopular in comparison to other 2D fighting games at the time. It did come out in a transition phase where arcades were going away but stuff like Alpha 3 and Marvel still had people playing them but SF3 did not.

I think SF3 keeps it's fanbase because the game is unique largely due to the party system and while I also don't feel the game is the second coming of Christ either, but I think it's an important game in the series and I hope we do get some characters from it in SFV soon after release as it's not looking like we're getting them in the main cast.

We already know that, it's on the UDON comic.

His v skill would be picking up the knife and the longer he has it he slowly builds v gauge. His v trigger lets him hold the knife and not losing it on hit and getting more moves with it.

Yeah, I agree. I would like Alex, Urien, Oro and Sean (only if reworked) back. But I certainly could do without Q, Necro, Remy, Twelve and Gill. In fact, I never want to see Gill (or Seth) in a SF game ever again.

I would really like to have Alex and Urien back in the first year. The same goes for Abel from IV. The dude just needs some character, but his playstyle is pretty good and unique enough to justify his comeback.

What? No it didn't. Go back and look at the figures:

US Dreamcast sales - http://www.goodcowfilms.com/farm/basement/ga-archive/sega-dc-sales-03-04-2003.htm

A3 - 69,051
SF3 3S - 60,246
SF3 NG - 54,498

Japan DC sales: https://web.archive.org/web/20081230005313/http://www.japan-gamecharts.com/dc.php

A3 - 51.510
SF3 3S - 56.741
SF3 NG - 29.900

Compared to A3, it sold similarly on DC. Meanwhile on PS1, A3 sold a million copies. SF3 didn't get released on PS1.

Keep in mind that SF3 was also sold on console YEARS after its arcade debut, which of course hurt the DC sales even more.

Sorry, but roster was the least of SF3's problems when it comes to sales and performance. Promotion and availability were the main issues.

Yeah... it is.

Nope.

- Nash never died at the waterfalls. He died at the base holding down a weakened Bison. This has been confirmed.
- Shadow Nash never existed.
- Correction: Nash and Chun Li have met, but never fought. Gamest states this or something.
- The descriptor blantaly says this:

The world’s most popular fighting game franchise continues with STREET FIGHTER V, coming soon from Capcom! In the meantime, UDON is thrilled to bring you the first Street Fighter V-related story at Comic-Con International! Players around the world were ecstatic to hear of the return of fan-favorite character CHARLIE NASH to the series. Now, find out how he returned in our original comic production, THE LIFE AND DEATH(S) OF CHARLIE NASH! This book gives you the scoop on what Charlie has been up to since his last appearance in our comics! This 48-page, oversized hardcover book contains all brand-new content, and fans buying this sure-to-be-hot item will also get a FREE head sketch from one of the UDON artists present at the show. Oh, and don’t worry – this book also matches the rest of the collected edition books in the franchise. THE LIFE AND DEATH(S) OF CHARLIE NASH is a convention exclusive and will not be available in stores!

Obviously it's referring to the storyline Udon created and not something Capcom did. This is very evidence in the comic itself, since it directly follows what happens in the comics and not the games.

- The Udon comics exists separately from Capcom's spotty storyline. There's already a long list of inconsistencies with official material and Udon's stuff.
