Most rididulous Star Wars Expanded Universe content

The only OT related EU media I enjoy and consider canon are Shadows of the Empire (all of it), the X-Wing and Tie-Fighter games, and Dark Empire, and Thrawn (only Thrawn, the rest of Zhan's characters/species/plot devices are terrible).

Harder to decide for PT EU since so much of it is actually better than the films themselves (not that hard but still).

I came this close to punching my screen when I saw that, and I don't even like Boba Fett.

So much of the EU is just utter shit, especially the Vong stuff.

I'll admit it! I liked the EU when I was young and did not know the difference between good fiction and bad fiction, as I've gotten older and expanded my SciFi reading, most of the EU authors should never touch a book again.

I'm happy that the whole Universe is getting a reset, trying to explain what the fuck happens after ROTJ in the EU is just hard,

"Well, they fight the empire for a while, and shits good, little wars here and there, then pretty much the entire galaxy gets genocided and Han turns into a moody assshole because
the Vong drop a moon on Chewie in the first damn book
"

There are bits and pieces that are absolute gems, but most of it is just authors going way too crazy and basically writing shitty fan fiction.

I always liked the concept of the New Jedi Order (the galaxy being invaded by an extra-galactic enemy immune to the force, forcing old factions and adversaries to team up for survival).

The execution was just beyond terrible.

This is just fuckin pathetic. It's almost like the kinda art some Boba Fett fangirl would draw to go with her fanfic romance story of where SHE meets Boba Fett and the two marry and have children. "Only I understand him, and only I can tame the such a brooding man!!!". Urgh!!

Trust me, Boba Fett getting a wife and daughter is probably the least offensive thing involving him in Legacy of the Force. Karen Traviss turned him into the biggest Mary Sue in the galaxy.

What gets me the most is the fact that he takes a family picture with his armor and helmet on.

"Sweetie how do I look?"
"fine, but I want everyone to know that I'm married with Bobba Fett, not an eastern dude with a Cool voice, put on the helmet please"
"first in the bedroom now this!?"

TIE Experimental M1/TIE Bizarro
latest

WTF

Hey, those TIEs sucked in X-Wing Alliance; fucking Imperials tried to strap a turbolaser on a fighter, and it sucked if you got hit with one of those.

But even in those missions, pilots were reacting with "da faq" when seeing a lot of those experimental TIE fighters.

Oh shit, Traviss was behind this, wasn't she?

What was the flaw?

No communication whatsoever could go in or out.

I just looked it up again and I remembered some parts slightly wrong.
They use a cloaking device that was known before, but deemed useless for military use to cover up a ship that then headed to a planet Thrawn planned to besiege and hid right below the planetary shield.
Thrawn then faked the possession of Lasers that could pass through the shield -he fired in coordination with the cloaked ship and made it seem that the laser passed right through- to end the siege quickly and without many losses on either side. With an ultimatum to make an investigation of what really happened unlikely.
Other than that he hid some TIE fighters as cargo in an 'empty' freighter and he covered up asteroids and brought them into orbit of planet to make a safe traversal and escape from said planet impossible

The way it was written was quite clever in its use and limitations to not make it overpowered. You'd have to be tactical in it's use to be effective.

Speaking of Clone Wars, best bounty hunter in Star Wars will always be Cad Bane.

Badass enough to hold his own against Jedi with his guile, tech, and fighting skills? Check.

Master strategist who outwits the heroes in every appearance and always has a contingency plan? Check.

Breaks out of prison on such a regular basis one of his plans involves letting himself become a prisoner? Check.

Willing to kill a guy just to take his hat? Check.

Cool unique cowboy alien design? Check.

Amazing voice provided by Corey Burton? Check.

Based on Lee Van Cleef in The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly? Check.

Cad Bane is unquestionably amazing.

What ever happened to Bane? After he had taken care of that impersonator, he and his crew sort of disappeared out of existence. I mean, I can see this bounty hunter giving Boba a run for his money.

Where is this actually from? Is it a snippet of a book cover?

I went down a bit of a rabbit hole on that Wookiepedia... I'm pretty glad I dropped out of following Star Wars once the NJO was wrapped up. Sounds like it got really awkward.

Mind you most of this stuff I read between the ages of 9 and 14 but I felt there were good moments in the EU. Besides Thrawn (which I reread at 16 and found somewhat juvenile), I recall fondly the Han Solo trilogy (at the time I thought it characterized Han very well and also connected nicely to ANH), the X-Wing books, Shadows of the Empire (and Joel McNeely's score was up there with Williams' work), as well as some of the stand alone books whose titles I don't recall.

I think most of the ridiculous stuff happened the further they got away from the movie timeline. When you let the writers do whatever they want 100 years after ROTJ, and you need to keep coming up with new shit after 2 decades to sell more books and comics, then you'll end up with lots of mindboggingly stupid shit.

I love the TIE designs. It's like they have a box of the parts that they just stick together in increasingly overly complex configurations.

That image is from a Dark Horse comic (Star Wars: Blood Ties: Boba Fett is Dead 3, June 2012). The woman is a Kiffar named Sintas Vel, and his Kiffar/Human kid is named Ailyn Vel.

Also in the comic: Boba's kinda half-brother Gordon Connor Freeman

Her Republic Command novels aren't that bad. She created some pretty cool characters but I'll admit I got a bit fed up of the constant anti-Jedi stuff. In the end I think she was just adding more of it to piss off the people who were bugging her about it.

That and her love affair with the Mandalorians.

Hopefully Cad Bane will make an appearance in Star Wars Rebels.

There is a looooooot of silly shit in the EU (that horse-man never fails to make me giggle), but has been pointed out in the thread....

Fuuuuuuuck the Vong, and every story related to them (with maybe 1 or 2 exceptions)

I think Last Man Standing: The Tale Of Boba Fett is pretty good. Maybe the best take on the character yet seen.
Easily the best take.

It also should have been the last Boba Fett story. Having a Boba Fett story set after the end of "The Last One Standing" completely misses the point of "The Last One Standing", especially the ending.

I thought the Vong
didn't have the Force because Zonoma Sekot stripped it from them as some sort of punishment? I don't remember Onimi cloaking everyone and everything from the Force, only that he was the actual one pulling the strings (Shimrra was a giant puppet).

I think the Vong series had some good books but it just dragged on too long.

The Vong stories were the ones I never really explored as a kid though I think they started creeping into other stories like Outbound Flight. How has Wookiepedia dealt with almost all of it being relegated to non-canon?

Wookiepedia has astill every article like before.
Tbh, they have to start from the scatch.

Too many books, too many authors, too many ideas.

The one that revolves around the people who lived on the first deathstar?

No. spoil away.

And ends with them escaping during the trench run. Yeah. That's the entirety of my beef with it, but it basically ruins the book. If you're going to make a book about ordinary people who just found themselves working on the Death Star the whole point has to be that they're on it when it blows up, that the destruction wasn't bloodless. The entire dramatic tension for me was watching these characters unknowingly get dragged to their doom because they were just unlucky enough to wind up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

partly true. Sekot (somehow) burns out their ability to use the Force, but that wouldn't protect them from other Force users. See the Rakata for another example of this, or droids who don't show up (because they aren't living) but can still be picked up or have their energy drained or be hit with Force Lightning.

It also doesn't explain why all their weapons, armor, ships, food, mounts, literally everything would also be immune. Some of those things aren't even from the Vong home world so Sekot couldn't have changed them the way it did the Vong.

The Jester is an outcast whose meddling with his own brain allowed him to touch the Force again. It's specifically what causes his outcast status. He is both indirectly and directly controlling the mind of the Warmaster.

The whole thing is a dumb mess.

Bane was too Gary Stu for me. I was ready for Anakin to rage out and rip him apart.
Bane being a competent villain doesn't make him a Gary Stu. Obi-Wan has the upper hand on him for most of the disguise arc and we see plenty of moments of fallibility like when he caves in to the Jedi interrogating him.

He never seems invincible, just extremely resourceful and good at his job.

you wanna talk Bounty Hunters, I always liked this dude

I love Embo's hat so much.

Agreed on both counts. Loved that whole episode with the bounty hunter crew.

I keep thinking there can't possibly be anymore stupid TIE fighter designs, but the internet:

tielambda.jpg

TIE Lambda

Here's a link to a full image of all the different ships. Even the ones that don't look stupid have great names like:

TIE Fire Control
TIE Ground Superiority
TIE Lander

I mean, why stop there? It just means Twin Ion Engine. TIE Ice Cream Delivery. TIE Party Wagon. TIE Ship Cleaner. TIE Garbage Pick-Up.
