Transformers: Devastation |OT| Rising in Disguise

Just finished. Platinum managed to make hypest game of the year again. Is this third or fourth time in a row now? The game just feels so good and the feedback is great. Finishing bosses with a dropkick is great. Shame they didn't use the credit song in the last boss battle since it would have been even more hype.

This should probably get added to the OP

Really handy, thanks!
I feel the exact same way. I mean:

I don't care about this being basic execution, it just looks beautiful in motion.

Sweet!
So which bot is GAF's favorite and why is it hotshot bumblebee?

You'd think I'd say Bumblebee (but my name is actually a reference to Street Fighter) but it has to be Optimus Prime. I love his enthusiasm in this game and I'm also a fan of his finishers

Yep, this would probably be my personal GOTY so far if it weren't for Undertale.

This game is amazing, was expecting another Korra but i'm enjoying this as much as Bayonetta 2, they really nailed the nostalgia man, getting feels all over the place.

Just finished it. Great game, better than Korra, not as good as Rising but still very good. Would have been nice if Korra was given the time and budget this seemingly had, might've had better enemy varity and a bit longer.

I like what they did with the more open city level, seeing as they just had the two (two or three depending how you look at it) locations I'm glad they went for a larger world rather than smaller, linear locations using the same city tile-set and I like how they change the time of day to at least give it a different look.

Combat is great but it's Platinum and hard for them to mess that up. I love the impact of moves and how the vehicle attacks are basically Bayonetta's wicked weaves but on a button prompt. Still not a fan of hold to transform, still wish it was double tap or on a different button. Love the weapon variety and levelling up, the tech building thing is cool. The ranged attack implementation is also good and it's good at auto targeting what you want it to.

Music is great but Rising has legit spoiled me on action game music. Like, unless lyrics kick in at the hypest point of a boss fight I just don't feel hyped like I should. I need someone to sing to me when I'm kicking ass. Disappointed that Dare or The Touch didn't play but I guess you have to save something for the full priced, higher budget sequel re-telling/adaptation of the movie.

Still though, as cool as it was and how cool the last fight was I still hoped for something bigger at the end. Some bigger boss fight than
a one on one with Megatron
. It was also pretty easy but then again I just played on Warrior (I think? The default, normal mode).

I really hope this actually does well for Platinum and Activision decide to do a higher budget, full priced sequel.

Also (ending spoiler)
what was up with Nova Prime at the end? Just a mean tease for the sequel we won't get or is he a secret challenge mode boss fight?

Finished it on normal, started a new run on hard. Fantastic game, but the budgetary limitations are all too apparent. Still, Saito once again shows that he knows how to make a little go a long way. I said before mid-game that I think Rising is better, but I've changed my mind. While Rising has the awesome slicing mechanic, those amazing characters and that music, the core gameplay of Transformers, despite being more simplistic and essentially cobbled together from other PG games, feels more satisfying to me. It's really brutal, split-second stuff, and the weapon-dependent movesets are nicely balanced and super-satisfying. And it's goddamn Transformers.

I really, really, really want a bigger, better, bolder sequel.

I also like the idea that Transformers is a Western giant robot series now with a game by Japanese giant robot lovers. Also a sucker for cheesy dialogue and slick cel-shading.

Even though the Transformers branding and characters are western, I've always considered the franchise Japanese due to it originating from Takara (recycled from their Diaclone and Microman lines to be exact). The cartoon character designs were Japanese, too.

I agree though, It's soooo good to have Japan making licensed games again.

Totally missed this game! So it's alright then? I see a lot of people comparing it to Rising, which I wasn't that fond of to be honest. But I need a break from huge sandbox games and I guess this might scratch that itch.

It's closer to Bayonetta in mechanics, but with Rising's musical style and focus on humanoid bosses.

The combos and mechanics are closer to Bayonetta but the level design feels closer to Wonderful101 and Korra but it has the graphic style of Viewtiful Joe mixed with the frantic fast paced gameplay and music of Metal Gear Rising while at the same time make it feel like a semi-arena fighter like Anarchy Reigns and Mad World mixed with some sweet combo finishers like God Hand however with the fun gunplay in slow-mo that you would find in Vanquish with neat little touches to the characters that you would find in Okami....but with Transformers
*BREATHE*

Also, would anyone be willing to help out the Xbox One people? Currently, it's not possible to stream Transformers: Devastation via the Xbox One Twitch app. I've contacted Platinum, Microsoft, Activision and Twitch via forums, tweets and e-mails to try and get this issue fixed. Not only that but the Game DVRs do not record any sound. It's not just me but many other people I've talked to are having the same issue but we're not loud/bug enough to get noticed. Tweeting and/or e-mailing Twitch, Xbox etc would really help out. It's our only method of streaming this game but this issue is preventing us from doing that. Thanks.

Edit: are PS4 users having the same problem?

A bit offtopic, but I see Prime 1 Studio is making some sculpture based on concept art for the TF movies....

Prime-1-Optimus-1.jpg

Hot damn, that's slick. If this is what Prime looked like in the beginning, there'd been a lot less complaining.

I like that a lot. I have no issue with showing us a more mechanical look in the films but you can do that without completely sidelining the iconic designs we've known throughout the decades and making it unnecessarily convoluted. The above is a great example of combining the two.

Now that I think about it, I do kinda wish Prime's ultimate attack was pulling out the Matrix of Leadership to "light our darkest hour".

Nothing against the fire punch thing, that's still pretty cool, but I feel like the Matrix would of been a tad more fitting.

Magnus is where I say good-bye to this game I think. It's just an annoyance that it's all about the loot at this point, and I don't even have enough credits to properly synthesize weapons. Once you reach the S level everything costs so much and you get so little when you sell anything. Bunch of inventory management is what I end up doing.

A world where a Platinum characcter action game lacks a taunt is a world I'm having a rough time with.

You couldn't taunt with Raiden either.

Having played around some more with the grappling hook on Magnus difficulty, it's actually fairly solid in the utility department given that I don't have a fast, heavy-hitting weapon yet and thus need to space enemies out a little. Initially I thought it'd only work on the lower tier mooks, but it works on anything at roughly the same size as yourself including bosses like shielded Megatron. Gotten quite a bit of mileage out of it against the Constructions too; interrupted Hook's long-range attacks in vehicle form, yanked Bonecrusher out of his digging animation before he went fully underground, pulled Mixmaster away from his green goop et cetera. Sure, you won't land it 100% of the time with how (as with anything else) the enemies have a general tendency to dodge, but if you find those openings like I was forced to due to lackluster damage output, you can make the aggressive enemy types more vulnerable thanks to the "I'm being pulled" animation or as they're moving away from you after for example a parry. I like this gun a lot; I hope they get to expand on it in a sequel by allowing to pull yourself up to Devastator-sized enemies and by adding the ability to drag smaller enemies behind you in vehicle form.

Speaking of tools that I slept on: the spinning lariat (which already has a sizeable hitbox) also seems quite potent for crowd control. I already knew it had a higher chance of applying stun on its own (same happens with the palm thrust), especially when the icon in the top-left corner is lighting up, but it also seems to be re-applying lingering status effects as highlighted here. Not really sure why the lariat favoured the Cryo from my sniper as opposed to the Shock from my axe, but if I were to guess it probably calculates that off of a damage threshold most likely.

Unless you meant that it's more simplistic than some of Platinum's other titles, I disagree with Transformers having less mechanical depth to it than Rising.

Truth: Commander difficulty from the start. Sideswipe Vs Megatron Battle = most fun I may have ever had so early with a combat game.

No upgrades yet, pitiful strength/health, only starting weapon set. Megatron will 2-hit or 3-hit you if you're lucky. All while that amazing battle music plays and you really learn the Rush mechanic for the first time. One of the cleverest setups for a boss battle as well which really gets you into vehicle mode in an "out the box" thinking way.

Just fucking phenomenal. Haven't finished the game yet as a Commander dry-run is... whoooo boy am I retrying every other boss. But it hurts so good.

Praise be to Saito. Hallowed be his name.
That boss fight took me 2 hours after I played a bit of Veteran and decided to switch over because it was too easy. Veteran Megatron took me maybe 4 minutes for comparison. The game never quite got that hard again on Commander though. Maybe I got that much better, but more likely the Ark customization significantly curbs the difficulty if you use it right. I kind of regret splurging on Lvl. 12 S-Rank Shock Gauntlets part-way through the game-- the end game wasn't anywhere near as tense the beginning.

Another Warrior run completed, but now with Bumblebee. I totally wrecked
Megatron
in the end, he didn't even touch me lol. Started on Commander and oh man, lack of good weapons made the Devastator fight quite the grind. Yikes.

Going through Commander difficulty now, the Starscream fight after Menasaur is giving me a really hard time. I might need to go back with a gun that has more ammo stock.

I have levelled Prime up to 32 in each skill now, I think I'll save my credits for when I unlock the higher levels rather than getting everybody up to the same level.

Having a tech slot that enables secrets on the map is really good for collecting a bunch of weapons for selling / synth.

Also the Menasaur music is my favorite by far.

Good god, chapter 3 on Magnus is insane. How the hell am I supposed to
get the red energon back to the bridge with 7 hammer guys on my ass?

Throw that shit at them.
If you have you a gun just fire at it and watch the fireworks.
From a safe distance of course~

The problem with that is that it takes way too long to pick up the energon, so they just hit me as I try to pick it back up. And none of my guns are powerful enough to take them down, not to mention I can't see shit from a distance due to the perspective.

I finally settled on just laming it out with items. It took all of my recovery items and some of my attack/defense buff items. That part was horrible and I feel no shame.

Got the game. Holy shit, Bumblebee and Grimlock are fun as hell. I know most people prefer Bumblebee but I'm loving Grimlock. Powerbombing fools is too much fun. I can't be the only one who loves playing as him.

The Red Energon cubes never disappear from the screen, so you can just keep firing at it with your gun and it'll keep on exploding, exploding and exploding.
Unless on the hiogher difficulties those guys don't get stunned easily :P

I'd like to play as him more but I can't particularly get the hang of him. He does have a lot of fun tools though. His special attack in T-rex Mode is hilarious lol.

Just beat the game. Played it on PS4 and I'll likely grab it on PC soon too (how do the two versions compare? Does running in 4K make the game look significantly better than 1080p? I wasn't sure due to the art style whether or not the differences would be big).

Like any Platinum game, it ruled and I never even watched Transformers as a kid. I'd love to get a sequel with a higher budget to address some of the common complaints.

Just finished the campaign.

Uh, holy shit.

Sideswipe is the best dude. His Vehicle Attack and skill are sick. Had to finish the game with Prime, though, because it just fit.

Platinum gameplay the GOAT. Such simple stuff like dodges and Vehicle Attacks lead to some really crazy shit happening that you trigger entirely on your own. They nail mechanics.

And that soundtrack. Gimme it. All of it.

i just finished my playthrough as him. totally stomped the last bosses with a hammer. they barely fought back. i didn't like getting swarmed and had to adjust with his long range options. yea, i think every char. in this game is fun.

oh and his grab, fun times! then i got countergrabbed and wtfed.

+1 for Sideswipe. This just makes me want to replay Rising and Bayonetta 2 really badly.

I didn't realize with Bumblebee when you activate one of his vehicle transformations (the one that slams down on the opponent), when you do the next transformation he starts spinning on the enemy with the front of car like a topper and if you rotate the left analog stick in a 360 degree motion you just drill into the enemy. So dope.

Besides the gallery items and the higher difficulties, is there anything left to unlock once you've completed the campaign? I'm not much of a trophy/achievement guy myself.

Need a different element usually, like a flame sword.

They probably should have color coded them or something.

Huh. They really should have. Played through the game on Commander and didn't notice that. Thought they might have been for a higher difficulty or something.

Yea I'm on the Sideswipe train, dude is awesome.

He's the perfect hype machine. Dash in with that skill, dodge, CRAZY SHIT INCOMING. I love his Vehicle Attack where he just 360s his ass towards everybody.

I love busting shields and then doing Vehicle Attacks on another fool. Just too damn good. If this had the crazy setpieces that Rising had, I'd be dead from hype
