Ancient Aliens: New Nin. 3DS now offers the best SNES emulation on any handheld

Thanks for that info! A much bigger jump than I was expecting!
Nintendo really did wanted to solve that issue with CPU power.

444mhz? Really? They down clocked it that low? Pretty insane if true.

I thought so too, so I looked into it. Hackers just posted this info a week or so ago. The default for playing games on Vita was stated to be 333MHz. The original 3DS wasn't as far from the PSVita in CPU power as I thought.

Thats just clock speed.

The vita has a cortex a9, which gets considerably more instructions per cycle than the arm11 in the 3ds.

On top of that, Vita has NEON for SIMD, whilst the 3ds has those VFPv2 co processors, which is... well, kind of one sided.

Picodrive runs Virtua Racing MD at a solid 60fps during gameplay. Pretty great but sadly 32X doesn't seem to be running yet. :/

Also GPGX is running some MCD games slow (40-50 fps) in the newer RA builds. Picodrive is running everything I've thrown at it 60fps though.

Buying a New 3DS because of this, but not sure if I should get the XL or regular. Opinions? Thoughts?

I was in the same position as you a week ago.

So I bought an ips new 3ds xl and a regular new 3ds(animal cross bundle)

I returned the regular size 3ds.

The ips screen of the xl have a much better screen. It made my older 3ds games look better.

How do I run picodrive for Sega cd games? Do I just need the bios?
I've been using Genesis plus but my Sega Cd games run slow. I'm on a new 3DS.

you need bios_CD_E.BIN, bios_CD_J.bin, bios_CD_U.bin in retroarch/cores/system/ I think.

there's no mp3 support either, you should make a full iso of your game.

(should be added to OP... neogeo.zip stays with your roms though (and there's a limit to how big of a rom you can load now..KOF96 seems to be the biggest I could load on new3DS), and so are PC engine addon carts)

(from what I read...didn't try it first hand myself)

Is PSX emulation likely to reach a playable point on n3DS eventually?

I mean having SNES, GBA and Megadrive is good enough for me but having PlayStation as well would be amazing.

On new3DS, if you have access to dynamic recompilation, I'd say yes, I got full speed on prasite eve with unsynched audio (45-60fps when synched) (.cia)
better GPU support, sound support through DSP and more RAM will help in the long run.

If not (.3dsx for now) I'm not sure... (but newer fw will get fw acess at some point I suppose (Yellows8 surely has more up his sleeve)

How annoying. Can't get any of the Neogeo games to run. I know I need the bios and all that. I just want my Fatal Fury's and KOF 96 to work. Also do I really have to shut off the system each time I get that refresh rate error?

Little late, but I thought I would chime in here too. I bought a Black N3DS XL when they released and then switched over to a Red N3DS XL shortly afterwards. That's been a few months ago and....I've barely touched my 3DS.

Fast forward to a week or so ago, where I trade my Red N3DS XL for a Regular N3DS. I've probably played that system more in the past week than I did my N3DS the entire time I had it. I can't really say why I like it so much more, but I think it's a combination of the size, the non-shininess (I hate fingerprints), and the ability to stick it in my pocket (again size). I'm all about displays, but this TN display really doesn't bother me at all.

Playing Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo on a handheld makes the New 3DS XL upgrade so worth it.

Question, is the PAR 1:1 aspect ratio option always the best one to get the most accurate picture? Or the custom setting with the default custom resolution? Trying to get GBA and CPS2 games to look good.

some systems display a resolution that just isn't right if displayed 1:1 (cps2 and igs pgm come to mind) so pixels aren't supposed to be displayed "square".

you should set the display to 4:3 for those. (interger display will reduce the screen estate but make it look "right")

as for GBA, screen ratio was 3:2,if memory serves correctly.

Wow, I had no idea the homebrew channel was so easy to setup on the New 3DS. I still thought it required old firmware and a specific game to get it installed.

Quick Question regarding the GBA emulator (GBSP I think it's called, the retroarch one I think), is there a way in the settings to shrink the screen size down to native GBA resolution? Currently it just fills the screen which makes it look kinda washed out. I tried to edit the Width and Height to native GBA settings, but it didn't seem to do anything.

The CirtAGB GBA emulator runs natively at the right size, but it also puts a blue border around everything which I don't love, anyway to fix that if the Retroarch one can't be changed?

Regardless, being able to have my library of GBA games (which I've been collecting my favorites for over the years) all on my New 3DS if really awesome!

Turn integer scaling on, I think that will do it.

12.4fps with Final Fantasy Tactics on PCSX.3dsx with the latest nightly. Still better than nothing.

The Debug Log says that it set the video resolution to 1281x720, so 720p, which the 3DS probably can't handle...

I just got a NEW 3ds for this and I'm pretty goddamn impressed by how well the emulation stuff feels already. It's just super pleasant to play SNES and GBC games on a 3DS, which is why it's even more baffling that Nintendo didn't really support Virtual Console properly on that thing.

Hope the Retroarch people are going to support the 3DS heavily - I'd love to also play PS1 and N64 games on that thing. If that's possible, the 3DS could easily become the perfect emulation portable.

hm...seems like you guys (3dsx users) are getting dynarec on fw 10.x thanks to gspwn.. (first core to get it : PCSX rearmed) (gpsp for gba might get it too)

(using the GPU for Direct Memory Access)

(seems like Alias spider got rid entirely of DMA via CPU for .cia too...I hope it doesn't mean slower preformance for 9.2< users :\ )

I echo the desire for a MSX core to get added. fMSX would probably be best, already running on PSP iirc.

Dynarec is great news, makes me wonder if we'll ever see the RA team attempt Mupen64Plus.

Also, sounds like Ninjhax 2.5 will make those rom ceilings a thing of the past on n3DS. We're leaping from 64MB to 188MB. :)

I'm really excited to see how PSX support progresses. It's not hard to imagine getting the vast majority of games running at 60fps. If so, I'd probably prefer playing PSX games on my 3DS than Vita. The resolution is better on the 3DS for PSX games, and you're not just limited to the selection of games on PSN.

I wanna see more arcade stuff. Gotta have my Konami stuff like X-Men and such.

They did both. From dual core 268 MHz to quad core 804 MHz. Memory also got a big boost (6 MB to 10 MB on chip, 128 MB to 256 MB RAM, 1 GB to 4 GB flash). The GPU and slave CPU (ARM9) were left unchanged.

interesting. i didn't expect them to up the speed that much. i guess they kinda realized the extra power was very cheap to get this time. no GPU boost probably makes it so that the GPU is the bottleneck for n3DS-exclusive games.
also, the slave CPU not getting updates kind of makes sense to not break DS BC (that's the one that runs all DS and GBA ambassador stuff, right?)

Woah that's quite a big bump. I remember thinking it wasn't much of a change.

given nintendo's past history, it kinda makes sense since clock speeds were never bumped that much. i think the DSi upgrades were just 2x the speed and the GC->Wii bump was 1.5x.

hopefully the next handheld has another bump on top of this one. they should be able to do it.

Newest builds seem broken, stick to the ones from two days ago for the time being.

Should be fixed by tomorrow I'm guessing.

Wat?!? Wow! I didnt think it would be so soon. This scene is moving so fast.

Any word on when it will hit the nightlies? And is the latest one working yet? (Rich said its broken^)

Toad is the man on Mario Kart, the only one I use.
I'm pretty stoked at how far emulation has come, may the classics live forever.

What is having dynarec going to allow? Was that the thing that allowed PS1 emulation to run well?

So what's the best method to add files wirelessly so I don't have to open the back of my XL every time?

There's an option in the settings menu that let's you directly mount the sd card has a drive on your pc if it's on the same network as your wifi device. I think it's "sd management" or something like that.

Just noticed this, thanks. How nice for Nintendo to add such a feature.

I'm really enjoying the SNES stuff. Yeah, the sound isn't always emulated great, but passable. That, and the graphics look a little fuzzy to me.

EDIT: It's a shame SNES FFVI doesn't run at full speed.

Set Integer Scale to on and auto aspect ratio to on. Make sure it is also set to 4:3 in the aspect ration index.

For FFVI try a different emulator. It runs better on CATSFC than CATSFC Plus.

CATSFC is the one I use for FF6. it run's full speed indoors, on the world map and in battles, but on town screens it usually drops to about 45-55fps.

I play FFVI with fast forward on. It smooths out the sluggish parts, and it doesn't really speed up the main game. Getting 10X FF for grinding would be nice, but for right now, it's best in my opinion to just play with it on at all times.

Alright guys, I have installed the homebrew launcher on my PAL n3DS via Cubic Ninja. I've downloaded the latest nightlies file (October 13th) from the link in the OP. OP then says to:
Copy the 3DS folder into the root of your SD. Done
I already downloaded the Homebrew starter kit from Smealum's site, so I already have a 3DS folder on my micro SD card. If I copy the 3DS folder, it'll replace the current one, no? If that's the case, should I just copy the contents of the 3DS folder into the 3DS folder that's already on my SD card?

Also, in the nightly folder that I downloaded, there are two other folders:

cia
remaps

Should I do anything with these folders?

And another thing...
Bear in mind the GBA gpsp core requires a GBA bios file (gba_bios.bin) to run. That goes into SD:/retroarch/cores/system
I can create this folder on my SD card, but where do I get the GBA bios file, or is that something you can't speak about here? Apologies if so.

Finally, once I have everything installed, where shall I store the roms on the SD card? Do they need to be kept anywhere specific?

Thanks!

Thanks Rich! for the guide up and running with CatSFC but Super Mario World seems to lag with audio stutters. Is there any particular options i need to set as default to run SNES games at that sweet 60fps?

Audio sync off helps! Also use the newest nightly. I for one get no framedrops on SMW.

Also, you're on a N3DS right?
