Ancient Aliens: New Nin. 3DS now offers the best SNES emulation on any handheld

Is PSX emulation likely to reach a playable point on n3DS eventually?

I mean having SNES, GBA and Megadrive is good enough for me but having PlayStation as well would be amazing.

Its imminent, in one of two ways.

1. Dynamic recompile becomes available for 9.2 and greater firmwares.

2. The next homebrew launcher is coming with an option to run the 3ds cores at their n3ds speed, of 804MHz, instead of old 3ds 268MHz

Unless I am mistaken, point 2 here is incorrect. Emulators already have access to the full clock speed.

The update is to allow 3DS games not specifically coded to take advantage of the faster processors to use them anyway, improving framerate stability.

You are correct on point 1 though.

Paging Rich. Please advise on my post above. Many thanks.
EEK. So I ended up watching part of this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SKXk5GDMmcg

...and managed to install everything ok (bar the GBA SP stuff, will look into that another time). I notice for SNES emulators, in the nightlies files, it gives you SNES 9X, Cat SFC and Cat SFC Plus. I initially ran Donkey Kong Country using SNES 9X, but it was really slow. I then tried Cat SFC Plus, and it's practically running perfectly so far. Is it recommended to use Cat SFC Plus for most games, or is it one of those things where certain games work on certain emulators better?

Thanks.

That would be amazing. Time to find out which games are CPU-bound and which ones are GPU-bound (hello, Snake Eater 3D).

Snake Eater 3D is hardcoded to 20fps, but yes granting it access to the full CPU power does appear to give it a much more stable 20fps. Based on reports I've seen anyway, I've not tried it myself.

Top games to try would be Pilotwings Resort, with its numerous inexplicable framerate drops, and Donkey Kong Country Returns (30fps but regular drops to 20fps and below)

How is this possible?

When did that happen. Guessi need to get the latest nightly.

A full speed PSX emulator with stereoscopic 3D support would be bananas... I can dream, right?

Audio sync off helps! Also use the newest nightly. I for one get no framedrops on SMW.

Also, you're on a N3DS right?

Yep im on N3DS XL :)

Ok will try that thanks. Ive literally run retroarch with all settings default, hope thats correct. Or shud i set any core overclock options also?

I know, but the cutscenes are riddled with framedrops, which is a shame because the 3D work is top notch.

Ah, I just remembered that Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon framerate is actually unlocked (there's a few rare rooms where it goes up to 60fps), so that's another one to keep an eye for.

Should probably update this title to include Mega Drive too. Because its true.

Been messing with the newest Genesis Plus GX retroarch nightly. Tried the games I have and they all run flawlessly, locked 60fps. Best performance of any emulator I have tried on the N3DS hands down.

But the best thing is how it looks. It's literally perfect for the 3DS screen. Set it to 1:1, integer scale on, bilinear filtering off, no overscan and you get this:

SNES: 256x224
Mega Drive: 320x240

3DS, 2D mode: 400x240

So yeah, hope that helps explains it. Mega Drive looks stunning at 1:1 as it is a perfect vertical resolution fit to the 3DS screen. SNES isn't and as such you cannot increase the image size without it affecting the pixel ratios and therefore requiring bilinear filtering to look decent.

The 3DS is literally hands down the best way to play Mega Drive games on a handheld device now. And ironically, its almost entirely due to the low res screen that the console is usually criticised for.

Having set up homebrew just this weekend and Mega Drive always being my first choice to try out emulation I can concur with this. Previous I was still using a 1st gen PSP for portable emulation and your right that despite the screen being better on the PSP(or on phones which I've also tried), Mega Drive games just look right on the 3DS screen. 3DS having a better dpad then that version of the PSP helps my decision which to use too.

Regarding the SNES, is there no way to simply crop off the edges of the image in order to obtain 1:1 pixel scaling?

Heck, didn't CRT's cut off the edges of games anyway?

No. Well, kinda.

You cannot resize to fill the screen without scaling 224 to 240 which introduces distortion that only bilinear filtering can hide.

To answer your question, you can already crop enough for the 3DS to display SNES games with no distortion. Use the custom scaling in retroarch to do it. However you lose enough of the image for it to be not worth it.

1:1 SNES still looks great on the XL though, regardless

I think I'm missing something. How is this 1:1? Aren't you missing pixels?

To me, 1:1 means, one in-game pixel is mapped to one physical pixel on the screen, which in this case would by definition mean that you'd have to cut off the edges.

Edit: I'm an idiot who thought that 224 > 240. Don't mind me.

Can we merge or discard this thread in favour of the other 3DS Retroarch one?

Uh, why should this thread be discarded? And what other 3DS retroarch one? This thread is about emulation, specifically SNES, on the 3DS. The other thread is a general homebrew and exploit thread.

So no, I disagree. Not that it's your decision anyway.

Any word on progress on a Virtual Boy core that runs well? I tried it but seems to only run stuff at 8FPS or so at the moment. Would love to see this working properly.

Pretty stupid I have to homebrew to get Wonder Boy on my 3DS, Sega really missed the boat there not VC'ing the GG one.

I was really expecting it, they released that Monster World collection thing on consoles that was specifically missing Dragon's Trap for some reason - but like it was perfect release those on console and release the GG Dragon's Trap on 3DS VC. Instead we get nothing!

*hugs homebrew 3DS*

My opinion is that info is split between two threads. When I try to go back to find some info I more often than not forget which one it was in and have to check both, which is annoying.

I also saw that there was some confusion on gbatemp as to why there were two competing threads here. I can only imagine they're referring to this and the homebrew thread as that tallies with my opinion.

Just my 2p

fMSX isn't loading disk images for me through rgui, only carts (roms). Am I missing something in my bios?

Also, I wasn't aware fMSX doesn't emulate MSX turbo R? And I just found out Illusion City has a partial english translation too! ;__;

I'm having trouble with Super Mario All-Stars + Super Mario World, please help!

I'm using the Retroarch libraries from 13th October and I'm specifically using Cat SFC Plus. The game starts up okay and I can acces the menu without any problems. However, when I start the first level in Mario Bros, it all looks okay except I can't move Mario at all. I then tried Lost Levels, and it takes me to the main menu screen but I can't select anything. It's the same thing with Mario Bros 2. Takes me to the main menu and then I can't do anything else. The story starts appearing.

Mario Bros 3: I can get to the map screen but then can't move Mario on the map so I can go to the first level.

Mario World - I can start the game where it takes me to the splash screen that welcomes me to Dinosaur land, with the message saying that the Princess is missing, but then it gets stuck at this screen and I can't do anything.

Is there a quick fix for this? Thanks.

Ha

Catsfc has a very bizarre bug. Gamepads are switched in SMAS. That's why you can't move - you're player 2.

So go onto the core options. Theres a switch joypad toggle.

Thanks, this has solved the problem. Is there a way to save this config for this game?

Also, is there a recommended way to put the 3DS in sleep mode whilst using Retroarch? The few times I've put it on sleep mode, when re-opening the 3DS, the system is still on but the screens are blank. I have to hold the power button down for a whikle and it takes ages to shut down :-/

Press the home button before closing the system.

That Pilotwings landing was clutch OP

I'm a pro at Pilotwings SNES, been playing it for 20 years now!

my videos make me look like I suck at most games, but that because I'm crouching behind a makeshift tripod made out of some james bond novels and viewing the gameplay through my mobile phone's screen, together with lag

1. I'm sure this has been covered in this long thread, where do you put your roms in all these folders?

2. Can you load DS roms?
