Dell's XPS line was just updated with 6th gen intel, the 15" XPS looks particularly sweet and has a 960 GTX mobile GPU (Two bad the two-in-one models lack the GPU). It's also in a 14" chassis, the screen takes up more surface area as with the 13" model.
Anyone have experience with these machines? Weighing this one with the new 15" Inspiron model, but that only comes with up to 8gb of RAM - does anyone know if that's easily expandable?

The Y50 uses a SSHD. It's pretty slow, but the 8GB SSD cache helps a bit. I'm also using 700GB of my 1TB of storage so w/e.
Lenovo's pricing has always been weird. They're clearly charging extra for Windows 10, as the Windows 8.1 models are better at the same price point, even though you can just do the Windows 10 upgrade yourself.
The $1099 model 59440644 sounds pretty decent imo, if you need the SSD.

A 970m is comparable to the 960 Desktop? That's a bummer.
Saw that even the current 980m has issues running MGSV at high, 1080P and 60 FPS. I'm sure it'll run SFV hopefully.
Also, has anyone seen 16 GB RAM in the wild? Two slot RAM can support up to 32GB while four can support up to 64 GB.

Well, after much much deliberation, I canceled my Surface Book preorder. For the $2000 I was ultimately going to spend on it, I decided it was a tad too underpowered for what I was looking for at that price - excited as I was about being able to draw on the screen. I was really, really pushing my budget as well.
In its place, I went with a simple MSI GE62 with a 960m for $999, and with the extra cash I picked up a new medium Wacom tablet, a Xbone PC controller to replace my aging wired 360 pad, a new mouse, and still had $600 left over. As excited as I was to own something new and shiny, in the long run I think I probably would have regretted spending $2000 on the Surface Book as soon as I tried to play anything other than WoW on it. I will be keeping an eye on it for the future though, as a digital artist it seems like a fascinating piece of hardware.

I just ran the DX11 maximum Heavensward benchmark, on my GTX 980M, and averaged 69.117fps with a score of 8970.

I recently picked up an Aorus X5 and I'm having mixed feelings. I love the 3k g sync display, and the 965m sli is certainly a powerful GPU config, but there are things about the system that I just don't think make sense. Considering that 965m sli would max anything at 1080p, I can't help but wonder why they shipped this with a 3k display. While it is a beautiful display, I really think that it's difficult to appreciate the benefit of 3k over 2k when the displays 15 inches. Also G sync isn't wowing me quite as much as I was hoping it would. Maybe the hype got me, but I somehow thought it'd be more impressive. It honestly barely feels any different than v sync to me, though I will say that it makes 48fps feel like 60 which is pretty cool I suppose. Part of me is regretting not going with the X7, but I don't know if 2 more inches would really matter that much and I ultimately got this laptop for both business and play so I wanted it to be pretty portable. On some level I wish I would of just put the money into a great 4k g sync 21:9 IPS display for my desktop rig, but I did need a laptop. I don't know, I always fucking get buyer's remorse, I wish I could just be happy with my purchases.

What's the minimum graphics card that is suitable to max out games with the fidelity of Wasteland 2, XCOM 2 (ideally maxed, I know we dont know requirements), Civ, Paradox GS games, Cities Skylines, etc.

I would not go any lower than the GTX 960M. It's a 750 Ti, and just like on the desktop side, it's considered the minimum viable product.

Thanks, what about the GTX 970m with 3 gb ddr5? After doing some more research, the MSI GS40 Phantom looks like the sweetest deal for a sub 15" machine with balls.
The 970M is great. At stock it's about the speed of the GTX 960, but overclocked it can be much faster.
The GS40 is really interesting.

Yesterday I went to Best Buy to pick up The Uncharted Collection for PS4. Instead I walked out with an Alienware 17 R3 laptop to replace my 5 year old Asus G72GX.

The opportunity for a laptop may or may not arise for me this fall, and I'm still trying to figure out if I will even need a dedicated GPU. A laptop would really merely be a compliment to my existing desktop (that's connected to a TV), and any gaming done it it would be very light. I rarely travel so this would only be for the occasional game away from home or games that work better on a keyboard/desk setup. I've also heard good things about the Skylake generation CPUs and Intel HD 520 graphics.
I'm really just wondering how many of today's low-end indie games still require some kind of dedicated GPU. Realistically DOTA 2 is probably the maximum level of graphics I'd ask of a laptop. Otherwise it would be a mobile Microsoft Office and possibly Photoshop machine.

If Dota 2 is as high end as you're gonna go I'd say integrated graphics should serve you fine. Intel's new integrated graphics can actually handle 1080p low settings 30fps on many recent titles so they should be fine for less intensive indie games, especially if they're well optimized. Another option would be to pick up one of those Lenovo laptops with a discrete low end discrete AMD GPU solution when they have a nice sale, which they do pretty often.
Haven't OC'd because no game has forced me too, but I will gladly do so, when the time comes.

The nice thing is these provide for very high IQ and functionality when you aren't gaming. The desktop and 2D applications look amazing in high res.
Regarding scaling, the good news is that if you are running software in 1080p then that scales perfectly into a 3840x2160 screen. There is no blurring and there are no scaling artifacts.
I think it is a good trade and maximizes both your 2D and 3D experience.

But will it be many, many times more demanding than UE3? No idea.

It's not like this is going to be my main gaming thing. I might occasionally run Torchlight or FTL or a Wadjet Eye game on a laptop. I just put DOTA 2 there as sort of a yardstick. I already have another gaming system.

No, a 960M won't bring 60fps in those games. The GTX 970M (desktop GTX 960 speed at stock clocks) will be the best GPU for your budget. I like this one. Comes nicely equipped.
Well, the cheapest Skylake laptops with no dGPU are around $699, which is why I feel they aren't a good purchase versus the Asus I suggested, which has a dGPU, an SSD, 1080p screen, and 8GB RAM for just a little bit more.
There is this one I just found. It at least has a GT 940M.
How much cheaper is it possible to go? Not much, honestly. There's this Acer w/ 940M at $519.99, but the a 3 score average with 47 reviews makes me wary. But then again, no laptop in the range of $500 and below will be perfect or without a downside.
There's a plethora of Broadwell and Haswell iGPU laptops to choose from in that range.

Ah. See I've never been able to get a straight answer on what laptop prices are like right now for something that's mostly going to be a work machine. I can't really think about my budget until I know what prices I'm dealing with for what I'm trying to find. Most of the games I'd even think about running under recommended GPU requirements just say "128MB of VRAM" or "HD4000" or "A DirectX card" or some high-end GPU from 15 years ago. Oftentimes no GPU requirement at all. Does that VRAM listing imply the need for dedicated video memory, or do iGPUs just take it from the main memory?
Edit: Spec-Wise both of those look like really good fits for what I want, but my only problem is I would really want to have an SSD. How easy is it to install a separate SSD onto a laptop? I guess that first link you gave me is a pretty good fit too.

Also keep in mind that low price laptops tend to have pretty poor screens - not a universal thing, but very, very prevalent. I know some people don't care about such things, but for productivity work, I find that poor viewing angles and bad colors affect where and how I can use a laptop with a bad screen.
