But straight up Tatooine KNOWS about Jedi. Fucking Watto in the prequels even says basically something about "Jedi Mind tricks don't work on me". Clearly if some low-level Junk Dealer on the ass end of the galaxy can reference Jedi in normal conversation they're not at "Mythical Status"

Honestly I always thought way back before the prequels that the reason there were so few Jedi wasn't because only a small number of them could use the force, but because whatever the "Clone Wars" were (which back at the time seemed way different) devastated their numbers and left so few of them left.

In his defense:
http://starwars.wikia.com/wiki/Watto He used to be a solider.

Basically this:
Its not that weird that the Jedi were regarded as myth even in ANH. There were barely any Jedi left at the start of the prequel trilogy and even fewer by episode 3. Think of how many planets there are in the galaxy . The number of people who had ever even seen a jedi would be so low it may as well be zero when compared the galaxy's population of sentient beings.

Eh, not really. It could easily be an off-hand reference to old legend. It seemed more like a snide joke from him anyway. He wasn't legitimately asking or seemingly even considering if Qui-Gon was a Jedi, he was just sneering "you think you're some kind of Jedi?"

Plus, the original trilogy does the same thing too anyway. Jabba remarks that Luke is using a Jedi mindtrick, except this time he's specifically saying it flat out.

one member of the Ren squad has a fucking cricket bat. It doesn't get more ballin than that crew in the rain. God help finn and rey.

Dude with the lightsaber gotta be pissed.

"Are you takin' the fookin' piss? Freezing my knickers off in this get-up, and you bring ya fuckin' cricket bat?"

"Its all I had, man! This thing is bloody heavy, it is."

The prequels screwed everything up. The Force was supposed to be a mystical thing that a small number of Jedi could fully utilize. Making it something thought of as an ancient religion is interesting because it makes it mysterious. But no, Jedis were all over the place just 20 years before the OT because reasons.

Agreed. The prequels really did take a hammer to the lore. I hope they just ignore them for this trilogy and work from the foundation of the original trilogy. You're absolutely right about the Force being mystical and quasi-religious. Not some midichlorian bullshit.

i shit you not i witnessed an indian goon bring one to school at a fight

Not in the Prequels. But now they are. Especially after being slaughtered. Also Rey says they've heard stories. They just find them hard to believe. Like others have stated it's been about 50 years since Jedi have been public.
Even so that's like saying "The Knights Templar? But those were a myth though!" despite that anyone who knows history in any part of the world clearly knows they existed and despite the fact that you never see them now and more over that no one has seen them for much longer than 50 years (in fact over 700 years).

I just don't see how they're a myth now unless a person is ignorant of history (which could be completely possible)

Heaven forbid people are excited over the movie, if they think it's gonna be the best one, let them, it doesn't effect you
Whoa defensive much? Did I tell him to stop being excited? That he's wrong to like the trailer? That he's ruining my experience? No I simply said calm down we haven't seen any actual meat of the movie and with the morsel we got there's no way we can make an accurate prediction about this movie That's all. Maybe you should calm down too or Heaven forbid should l be allowed to be anything other than rabidly hyped?

About the poster image...

Is that really a Death Star/ Starkiller Base?

It looks to me like a helmet with a cybernetic eye lens. Almost Boba Fett-ish looking...

God damn!

The Force is mystical, it's not midichlorians. They're used to scientifically gauge how much potential someone could have and all living beings have them. It's not the Force and doesn't explain the Force. Never did.

You know J.J. is a master of hype and cutting trailers (even his movies don't all turn out great), but I must say he has gone above and BEYOND with these SW trailers, they are MAGNIFICENT! And, I applaud how he is one of those few guys who doesn't spoil the plot of a movie with his trailers.

Great trailer.

It weirds me out to hear people say they cried after watching it though. I'm old enough to have seen all of the movies in theaters during their original runs. I was the perfect age for the first movie when it came out - 11 years old - and while I'm psyched I'm nowhere near moved to tears.

I am hyped as shit though :). So excited for my kids to see a cultural phenomena like this, they've never seen anything like it yet. Plus my twins are 11, same age as my first Star Wars :).

I'm not that big of a Star Wars fan but even I was impressed with how awesome this trailer was.

I literally bought my tickets after it was over.

I'll be seeing it with my best friend so my body is totally ready for December 18th.

What a hell of a Christmas present.

Possibly a myth because they just haven't been seen in about 50 years and are reduced to nothing but tales.

The Force is still mystical. Midichlorians are just a way to gauge how attuned to it one is.

It's really not a big deal.

Yep, but people sure did get touchy about it and took it overboard. I don't think it was necessary, but it didn't ruin or explain the Force.

I feel like getting some gaffers together for a road trip to Disney headquarters to sneak into the vault and watch the movie before it releases. We can beat up some Trekies on the way.

The less prequel terminology used the better. Definitely. Don't wanna hear about no sith, no padawans, no midichlorians, or any other such idiocy.

Darth Vader was always The Dark Lord of the Sith in the original movies. They called him that in lots of promotional material and books.

We just didn't know what Sith meant back then lol

Luke is obviously in the trailer after ROJ he had his face switched with Han to go into hiding unfortunately he went insane after living with Leia. Now Luke wants to take Hans face off he wants to take his face.....off

I just think you're over estimating that even at the height of the jedi that some people probably never saw a Jedi in their life time. There are literally tens of thousands if not more worlds in the star wars galaxy.

Yeah that's all true, but it completely removes the mystical aspect, imo. It was a really dumb move by Lucas to try and make the Force scientifically quantifiable, because Force sensitive individuals can feel the Force in others. They already know who is a powerful force. They don't need to test their blood. I'll never understand why Qui-Jon Jinn didn't feel Anakin's Force presence from a mile away. I think that other poster is right that it removed a lot of the mystery and mysticism that was present in the original trilogy and so lacking in the prequels.

But that's literally what the Knights Templar are except even less than what the Jedi would theoretically be in this movie now. Do you understand what I mean? We, with the 700 years that have passed, still know and regularly make media out of a Knight Order that is dead. Yet in this movie 50 years have passed and a Knightly Order than had Galaxy spanning influence is completely forgotten to be real? That's ridiculous.

I just think you're over estimating that even at the height of the jedi that some people probably never saw a Jedi in their life time. There are literally tens of thousands if not more worlds in the star wars galaxy.
When was the last time you saw a Knight Templar? A Hospitaller? A Teutonic Knight? Why are they not myths? China's probably never seen a single one of those knights in its entire history but I'm sure someone there who is familiar with history doesn't think "Oh man those guys never existed, stop telling me fairy tales."
