Can someone explain to me this trope? Why do people keep mentioning "anime avatar people" on the Internet as someone worthy of pointing fingers to? Are they all the same? Because from what I read it seems having an avatar with an anime picture sounds like the Internet equivalent of wearing a Fedora.

It's half a joke because it seems like anytime anyone says something naive and dumb, they have anime avatar. Not quite fedora levels but it's common enough that people have reversed it to anime avatar -> dumb.

Just anecdotal, but in my experience I've noticed there is an odd correlation between people with anime avatars - more specifically of moe girls - and "conservative," backwards and outright racist opinions on social issues. They're the same people that frequent places like 4chan and voat, I imagine.

There is no reasonable cause for you to be annoyed if the observations of others regarding people with anime avatars doesn't apply to you.

Hell, I've had like 3 anime avatars here, but that didn't stop me from noticing suspect behaviour nor did it make me feel like a part of the group that engaged in it.

I thought this was all a joke, I just heard someone at work say they wouldn't see it because it had a female lead, and another say "there wasn't black guys in the last one why do we have one all of a sudden?"

wat....what is wrong with people

My dad is doesn't mind the girl but he was annoyed by Finn since he was paranoid that political correctness was behind the decision. I told him you can't just not cast black people in anything ever because it might be political correctness. He couldn't really argue against the point.

Three people, three trolls start a whole backlash. I'd be laughing if it wasn't so sad. People are so willing to believe that most people are this openly racist that they buy this crap hook line and sinker. Are there people in the world who are pissed that there is a black lead in the new Star Wars? Well, we have 6 billion people, so I suppose there are. Are they around in numbers that matter, and do they have any sort of cultural cache to matter? Nope. Not at all.

The thing is, people don't apply critical thinking when they hear an absurd headline. The very idea that there was a decently sized group of fans who NOW of all times decided to boycott Star Wars because of a black guy is so patently absurd on its face that I knew it had to be a joke. And lo and behold it was.

The worst part of this is, this is going to become an urban legend of the internet, much like the outrage over Heimdall, essentially untrue, but accepted as fact anyway.

Great post. You basically echoed my sentiment about the non-outrage over Heimdall.

They must forget Mace Windu, Lando and was Jango Fett Hispanic?

I'm not saying these people represent a large segment of the community. But I do think it is an underlying line of thought in more people than we'd like to believe.

Just look at how Fox News attacked the Black Captain America comic recently. That line of thought permeates.

This is so weird to me. Every star wars movie has had black guys in except for A New Hope. Mace Windu and Lando are also incredibly popular characters. Why start hating now? There are much better reasons to boycott the movie than this.

I see people with anime avatars have moved from being creepy loli pedo jerks to racist conservative white supremacists arseholes.

Thats because for the millionth time this was done by a couple of trolls.

Yikes. Now would be the time to disassociate yourselves from backwards thinkers like that. Even if it's your own family.

I love how ONE SINGLE BLACK DUDE means that white race is being banished from the world.

It is not even Bechedel Test levels of black dude =P

The only other black actress is playing a cg character

All it takes is one of us and some of them start running.

It's annoying that people suddenly use the "PC card" whenever they feel a disturbance in their "White Force". They've been so conditioned to a White, male dominated world that when something seems "out of place" it sticks out like a sore thumb.

It's not PC dictating this, it's reality. Reality that the world is comprised of different races, variety, which SW has always been about. Also, wasn't Finn's original concept art white? It's not PC if they cast Boyega. Maybe Boyega was just the best damn guy for that role(which everything I've seen so far, the dude's totally into it) and it doesn't matter WHAT COLOR a person is, if they are the best choice, they deserve the role! I think that's how a lot of roles should be written, without race in mind(unless you are trying to make a point regarding race within the story, like something set int he Civil Rights era or such). Let the casting be open to ALL willing to try their hand and whom ever blows the people at casting away, gets the role. It should be the best man/woman for the job, not the best White man for the job(I feel the same regarding many other things, including video games). Let people stand on their own merits, not be judged based on gender or skin color. If they don't land the job, let it be because they are unqualified, not because of prejudice.

At first it looks like JJ is pushing a minority agenda with this movie and of course is pissing of the people who loves their status quo.

Personally I don't like agendas(of any kind) to be pushed in games or movies but still going to see day one midnight because star wars and because I already bought the cosplay.

A decision to cast a not-white person in a leading role is a decision to cast a not-white person, or in other words, it's just a decision to cast a fucking person for a role. It's not some nefarious-sounding "minority agenda".

How is castin one minority as a lead character = "minority agenda"? Is it seriously impossible for you to believe that the actor that gave the best audition peformance was a black guy?

People have different views so I'm not going to treat them like lepers because I disagree with them. If I chose to only associate with people who live up to my set of moral standards I'd have to live in a cave.

Is it hard to believe that the black male lead used his minority jedi powers and went

"these aren't the leads you're looking for" when they were looking at the others?

Star Wars's two new leads are a White Female and a Black Male. (not including Oscar Issac)

I hope Daisy and John's characters form a strong relationship and get married and have kids.

Interracial Jedi! That'll REALLY get the racists mad!
