Joel is pretty vicious, but not masochistic the way Kratos is. I doubt he'd ever tear someone's head off, or gouge out their eyes, split their jaw apart, rip out their tongues, pull out their intestines etc. So that sort of anti hero wouldn't necessarily fit the game.

Oh I know was just joking around, he is a very grounded anti hero. I don't expect Kratos to suddenly have the nuance of a character like Joel but wouldn't mind someone with motivations other than just vengeance.

Eh...I don't know.

GoW1 still managed to portray a fairly sympathetic Kratos whilst still being a bastard. There was some depth in him but that was taken away in 2 and 3...

I'll agree that Ascension was farcical.
 
Part of Kratos's problem, I feel, is that he's a very lopsided character. For every hour of him being an angry, ravaging madman, we only get a minute of his more human side. He's also extremely isolated a character, of which the people he can actually have a conversation with (Athena, etc) barely feel like characters because of it.

If I were Cory, what I'd do is utilise the Norse mythology and make it a story of a betrayed Valkyrie and her last surviving Einhenjar, being the titular Kratos, making it a dual protagonist story where we have the warrior and his guardian ( the Valkyrie) at all times moving the plot from 2 different perspectives.
 
I prefer Egyptian over Norse mythology personally. And if it changes to that then ppl can stop bitching about Kratos whilst getting something completely new.

Im glad they showed it honestly, I knew the moment they started showing the footage it would be the game I've always wanted. It's figured it was basically the spiritual successor to littlebigplanet and that's exactly what it is! They did a livestream yesterday and showed off a time lapse of some early sculpting using the tools you have access too in the game and it just made me even more excited.
And then they showed a full sequence with the polar bear that was made in the game and it's just awesome! Dreams is definitely becoming my most anticipated game and I can't wait to play it!

Not really. There are 3 dimensions to the issue: 1. Story, 2. Execution. 3. Previous characterization. It's a hard pill to swallow to try and characterize differently a character like Kratos given the way SSM did for the first three games. Not necessarily different (as in a "new character") mind you, just adding layers and expanding. It's tricky to write a story that tries to add dimensions to Kratos that you wouldn't normally associate with him (big contrast traits) due to how light some of those traits were touched in the first 3 games. Expectations from players play a big role in how something sticks. Add to that the complexities of game development - you have to execute with gameplay, narrative, acting, animation etc etc - execution overall.

Kratos was a family man. Kratos was a loving father, and husband. Kratos was a fierce warrior that commanded his fellow soldiers with respect. Kratos was a protector of lands. Kratos was also betrayed by the Gods in a multitude of ways. Almost each betrayal (and his quest for revenge) taking up 1 game. The loss of his family drove him mad, devoid of his former self, a sociopath, a killer, a mad man. If anything, it's a mark on SSM cap when people criticize Kratos portrayal and characterization. It's like that villain you just love to hate. You hate him because he's such disgustingly evil, villainous etc... Well he has done his job well if you hate him. It's no surprise to me that after Kratos's rampage in GOW3 people are just about as done with Kratos as the story is with itself. I was too.

As you say it's rather easier to avoid the complication, the complexity of the task (making another game with him) and do another protagonist with a clean slate where they practically design from scratch and have creative freedom.

I applaud what they tried to do with Ascension - as a spin off. Worked out well for the most part.

Because there is nothing to talk about PGW at the moment, but we got an infodump for PSX. It's like the September NPD prediction thread, where people only talked about october NPD.

God of War without Kratos is like Half-Life without Gordon Freeman or Uncharted without Nate. We still don't know what the next game will be. I'm hoping for a full series reboot starting afresh and completely rewriting most characters.

Well, they were until things went south. They are doing GoW4 to regain stability.

With that being said, I concur with all those who dislike Kratos though. He is a terrible character and I would have no qualms with him being axed in the next game. New setting, new characters, etc... and I am completely in. I'll still be in with Kratos but I will be glaring all the way through. :P

Breaking News: Kratos is a terrible character?

Wow i thought everyone loved Kratos? I know I do. I love the over the top yelling at people. It's what you do when you're angry lol. I feel like they gave me enough back story to feel for him for 3 games.

It's really interesting to me that people don't like Sony franchises.

MS has now 3-4 factories that only job is to work on single franchises, Nintendo is relying on the same core franchises for 30 years. Mostly what I see from Xbox and Nintendo owners is excitement when a new game is announced in those series, when I see Sony announcing a sequel, it's usually resentment.
and then bitching to bring back some obscure shit like Wipeout, Ape Escape or Medievil lol
