Question for yall how much pandering are you guys expecting for this one? Like little nudges here and there and winks are cool but Im honestly hoping it's not a 2 hour long "Remember when Star Wars was Star Wars that shit was FIRE wasn't it....oh yea new characters tho"
I feel like JJ will balance it out well but Im just thinking of it from the way it's being marketed...but then again it could just be marketing

Leia's not actually crying in the trailer. She's just got her eyes closed.
"pandering" and "fanservice" are basically coded terms for "I recognized a thing and therefore it's automatically stupid" anymore.
I'm not expecting any "pandering." I'm expecting some winks & nods, yeah. And references to stuff in the previous movies. But it's a sequel, so it's not like that sorta shit is unwelcome. That's part of why you're in the building: If you weren't looking for extensions and repurposings of familiar elements, you wouldn't be watching that sequel in the first place.
Setting up the former cast and locations is obvious it's building on a foundation that's already there. Im asking do you see it a passing of a torch in terms of story or will it still be the big 3 overshadowing the rest. Or 2 because Im assuming Luke will have a small amount of screen time. Then again I havn't read or looked into the spoilers shit.

Think the focus will be on the new characters. The old ones are there logically but they're not the main characters. It seems like Han is a big character and Chewbacca will be there naturally but they're not going to be overshadowed. In the trailer it introduces and sets up Rey as the new main character followed by Finn.

I originally thought of it being a Jurassic World approach on it as well. Idk just a thought that hit me with the start of the marketing machine starting up in a month or so and how they would approach it.

For those saying "oh noes too similar! It has people in it", here are some similarities to A NEW HOPE.
Some of it is spoiler, some is obvious from just watching the trailers. I haven't read the full synopsis or anything, so might not be all.
- hero is an 18year old "no one" (who will turn out to be related to the Vader character later) on a backwater desert planet, wants to see the bright galaxy
- hero by accident gets ahold of an item the Vader character/Empire wants back.
- Imperial stormtroopers (coming from a Star Destroyer) land on the desert planet and scorch a place in search of this something they want (DS plans/Luke's light saber)
- hero seeks out guidance by an old veteran. (Obi Wan/Max von Sydow)
- there will be a mystical "introduction to the Force" scene with the mentor similar to Ben Kenobi's hut but this time featuring some talk about the lightsaber crystal)
- Von Sydow probably dies at the village burning, similar to how Aunt Beru and Uncle Owen died for Luke
- they go to a cantina (!), meet up with Han Solo and Chewie
- they escape in the Millennium Falcon
- they get chased by Imperials.
- they have to infiltrate the Empire stronghold superweapon which can destroy planets/solar systems
- there will be "you may fire when ready" demonstration of said super weapon
- there is an Admiral Tarkin character
- there is a Darth Sidious character pulling strings who will stay in the background in this one and come forward in the next.
- there is a Boba Fett type character
- there is a cute R2 type character
- they meet up at the rebel base shortly before the final battle
- there is a climactic aerial battle above the Empire stronghold
What is fresh is the Finn character being an ex-Stormtrooper that joins up with the heroes and (probably) Leia pointing our heroes towards Luke's whereabouts and the cliffhangar ending of finding him.
There also seems to be a battle around the rebel base/Luke's hideout location which will be more like ESB or ROTJ in that regard.

Sequels are... sequels. Continuations. It's fine. I still don't agree with the Jurassic World nostalgia pandering accusations, the old themes showed up like 3-4 times in a 75+ minute soundtrack and the story was about hybrids and trained raptors. It's almost nothing like the original except it has dinosaurs in a theme park, and even that was different as this one was working. The shooting style wasn't even similar and they looked tonally very different. So I really don't agree at all with the accusations but people will see anything familiar and start pointing fingers, especially if they're seeing everything through a negativity viewfinder.
There are callbacks but it doesn't mean the entire picture is relying on nostalgia. They went back to the first island and I would have been livid if they didn't show the old visitor's center, even if just briefly, and it was very brief. I also recall a lot of people screaming about how Giacchino better bring back the old themes, or else! and when he did, even if just a handful of times, it gets criticized. I just don't think it's a very good argument and just adds more negative jack shit to a conversation. I'm not accusing you of that, you're obviously fine with it as you noted, but it's becoming a huge pet peeve of mine. This is Episode 7, not a spinoff or something, old shit shall return!
People are welcome to their thoughts but if all people do is whine about nostalgia pandering, that's just... unfortunate. It's not a very thrilling or intellectual conversation. Just my thoughts, I'm not attacking anyone, I'd just like to see better approaches to criticism. It feels very last straw to me.

Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan are trying to hit Maul's saber, but I don't know if Maul is trying to hit anything at all. I always thought his saber looked stupid in action even though the moment he lights up the second blade is badass for like 2 seconds.
I still think it would be more menacing if it were JUST the imperfect beam. That's enough to look super menacing. The hilt still just looks silly. Also in every shot so far it just happens to be parallel to the camera so the viewer sees it's best view, makes it look super stupid. Hope it's not like that for every shot it's in. Doesn't look natural.

My stance on the saber is that it's both a) Kylo trying to make it cool and b) Kylo trying to make it cool, dude almost seems like a cartoon villain to be honest, worshipping helmets of dudes that he didn't understand, wearing that mask for no reason other to... look cool, etc. I mean I don't think this is a flaw or criticism, just that the guy is kind of a dumbass.
Only read 3/4 so far but yeah, it's a pretty fun post-Jedi story. #3 was really great. I think it could have benefited from more than four issues though.

Right now I'm assuming there will be cameos of MacGregor as Obiwan and maybe even that wooden Canadian dude as Anakin's ghost, and the entire plot will be basically a rehash of ANH, both of which will piss off OT fans hoping this won't suck. I do not expect cameos of Jar Jar. So somewhere in there is the middle ground.
