Star Wars: The Force Awakens Final Trailer

Speaking of Star Trek (and I keep going back there but I think it's a perfect comparison point) the trailers for that had this sort of tone as well - the movie ended up being pretty lighthearted, overall. You could break that movie down and come up with plot points that seem really serious, and find emotional beats that seem fairly rough, but the movie as a whole plays like a fun, feel-good adventure.

Can't imagine that won't be the case here.

That's a good point. 2009's Star Trek seemed deathly serious in the trailers leading up to the movie's release, but then it had a lot of great light moments, like the bar scene, McCoy giving Kirk the flu, Scotty, etc. That was peak JJ. Hopefully he can surpass it with TFA.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens |OT| Does this armour make my ass look big?

Sorry...the joke is more relevant from a few pages back, but I was at work when the hilarity ensued.

Disagree with you on a few things.

People never questioned whether he is a good or a bad person, or whether he loves his creation. They criticized his vision and execution.

Second, bringing up other things people should be more mad about is logical fallacy known as fallacy of relative privation. Again, irrelevant.

Finally, i agree the cartoon is amazing, yet not considered canon anymore, so again it is irrelevant.

Basically, you said nothing particularly useful except "leave George alone!!!"

My comments weren't particularly directed at anyone specific, but I've read more than my fair share of comments since the TFA trailer dropped where people are wishing death upon Lucas, and speaking as if every cringeworthy or poorly executed bit of Star Wars sprung from the mind of George Lucas alone.

I don't like the prequels. I think they are poorly made movies, but movies aren't made by just one person. It is an effort involving hundreds of people, and yes, George was the head of the ship.

The Clone Wars cartoon (the CGI one), is 100% considered Canon by Disney and Lucasfilm, as is the Rebels cartoon. Those are the only content from pre-TFA that is canon (as well as whatever new content they are bringing out now). So, yes, it's very relevant. That cartoon is excellent, and is officially part of the Star Wars universe.

I'm not saying "Leave George Alone! *teardrop*" I'm saying that acting like this man has raped your childhood, and is worse than Hitler because he made three mediocre Star Wars movies is an overblown reaction. He's a filmmaker. Not every filmmaker can capture lightning in a bottle, especially when that lightning altered filmmaking forever. The prequels were not good movies. I'm not about to lose any sleep over it, and I'm ready to see what Abrams and the two other directors bring to the franchise that I love. The Roman Polanski bit was a little tongue in cheek, but there really are people that hold Lucas in the same group of revulsion as a monster such as him, or they certainly act like they do, considering the rage in which they direct at Lucas over the prequels.

Some fans aren't so much angry at the films, as they are directing their hate towards the man who made them. I think that's extreme, and troubling. Hate the prequels all you want, I know I do, but I'm not going to wish ill on the guy that made Star Wars a thing in the first place. I treat the prequels like I do any bad movies I don't like: I don't dwell on them any longer than I have to.

No reason to get hostile because of my comments with your flippant response. I'm not defending Lucas, but I don't think he's solely to blame for the faults of the prequels. I mean, I wouldn't blame Lucas for the shitty ILM effects in the prequels. He's not a computer animator, for example.

Seen the trailer too many times to count but the thing I keep going back to is the emotion.

The scene with Rey crying and Finn's eyes at the end have more emotion then all the prequel movies combined. That's what I love most. These actors actually showing real emotion that doesn't look forced or robotic.

Can't wait

Whoops meant all the prequel movies combined. I enjoyed OT acting for the most part

FTFY

They seem to outclass the OT actors, too

That would be my reaction to watching TFA on Netflix instead of on Blu-ray with 7.1 lossless sound on a big ass surround system.

The prequels never had a single moment with as much chemistry and energy as this:

I'm glad the new film feel looks like it has some LIFE in it.

I'm not disagreeing with you about the prequels vs. OT - you're definitely right there. I just think that the emotional range we're seeing from TFA actors also sticks out to me compared to analogous scenes from the OT. I'll have to confirm my reaction in another viewing though.

People talk about canted angles and lens flares but Abrams pretty consistently gets really good work out of his actors.

Yup. Performances in Trek are pretty uniformly excellent, and the stuff from the kids in Super 8 is equally natural and good. And even some of the stuff people like to criticize him for, like throwing lens flares all over the place in Trek, have a reason. His camera moves are motivated. The lens flares are intended to suggest there is always stuff happening on the periphery, some action just off camera taking place to let you know the world exists beyond what the camera is pointing at. There's a reason he puts the camera here and moves it there and all that, you know, traits you want a good director to have (and stuff that was pretty obviously missing in staging/blocking/shot choice in the prequels). He's not just doing shit for no reason, and is a far more calculated and purposeful director than people give him credit for. The comparisons to Spielberg are pretty well warranted in most cases.

What? Episode I-III had tons. IV had Luke and Obi, V had Luke and Yoda, VI had Luke, Yoda, Leia, Anakin (he turned back to the jedi if he had a force ghost.)

Also it's called the force awakens, there can be many jedi if they wanted.

In Alien movie rule there can only be one monster that is very hard to kill. In the Original Trilogy the Jedi's were sparse and lightsabers rare, which gave them a special glow and made them unique. In Aliens they broke that rule and made aliens less special and weak, just like in the prequels, there's lots of Jedi warriors, whose lives are short-lived and desensitized.

If their idea is to make Jedi a myth and special again, they have to follow the rule of only one Jedi. That's one reason why Ren is the only lightsaber wielder among his knights and Luke's blue lightsaber is reused by the heroes. There can only be one to inherit his legacy.

I never minded the lens flare.

What I like about JJ Abrams as a director is he doesn't seem to compromise on style while also being able to tell the story properly.

Did you guys know the voice that says "The first shuttle has made it past the blockade" in Empire over the PA at the hoth battle is Mark Hamill

You probably did

That's the moment. Some people like to pretend that the OT didn't have moments that were genuine as fuck. It's sad.

It's like that reaction Luke had when he shot the Death Star, it's perfect. Incredibly satisfying and goes perfect with the tension of the moment.

Man Star Wars is so good.

You don't have such scenes in modern movies anymore because there would be at least 20 different cuts for that little thing so actors can't carry scenes anymore.

Nice catch!

I love how he so reluctantly says the line, ha! It really is a shame that he never regarded Star Wars highly, but you can't hate the guy.

I think that's kind of misunderstood or an urban myth. I saw an interview the other day where he says that he likes it because it isn't profane and is a nice adventure movie.

I'm sure he doesn't think it's on the same level as like, Shakespearean plays or something, but people can enjoy things they think are vapid or 'low brow'.

After watching ep I+II, I had this dark thought again: 'man, maybe SW isn't that good in the first place', but then this gif hits me like a truck. Nope, it's just the prequels that suck balls. I'm probably going to rewatch the OT again to wash the filth away.

I'm spending so much money because of SW lately. I already bought the Poe's X-Wing lego set and tomorrow I'm getting the star destroyer and imperial cruiser. Probably getting the falcon at some point as well.

Just finished Episode III, soooo fucking good. I'd rank it just a tad below Return of the Jedi but I still think it's just as good as the OT.

Now to watch the 2003 Clone Wars cartoon.

As someone who's just finished rewatching empire again I have no idea how this thought can come to someone.

I'm managing to avoid buying the lego sets at the moment, I would be spending £200 only to get the Kylo's shuttle and the First Order troop transport just to get the minifigs, so I just can't justify it right now.
