My feeling is: black people have made it very clear they'd appreciate if you don't wear black face.

So even if you don't get it or don't totally agree: why disrespect black people in this way? Like, what, it was really important that your costume be 100% accurate?

Where are all these black people saying how horribly offensive it is? Because the overwhelming majority of the time it's upper middle class white people trying to look after black people by calling other white's racist whenever this comes up. Out in the real world this seems like an issue where no one really gives a shit: blacks, whites, asians, etc don't give a damn what you dress as where I live. Not one time in the real world has anyone I've ever spoken to, of many various backgrounds no less, told me they were offended by a Halloween costume.

It's a single day out of the whole year where you're expected to dress up as someone you're not, and the fact that over a hundred years ago it was racist to paint your face black doesn't make it so today. It's not the 1800's and early 1900's anymore, it's fuckin 2015 for christ sake. How much longer till it's deemed okay? This kid isn't trying to appropriate black culture any more than a white person dressing as Dracula is trying to authentically appropriate Romanian culture.

My mind if full of fuck, did he just say black people need to fall back because Asians "got over it".

Where are all these black people saying how horribly offensive it is?.

In the thread you're reading.

Maybe you're just assuming they're white people with their capes on, but I assure you - there are currently, right now, IN THIS VERY THREAD, black people posting about how fucked up blackface is.

I've heard the '' it's just to honor said person. There is no bad intent''

This was on TV 2 years ago. I've heard that it was no different last year. This is French Canadian TV

Even children don't need to know that if someone has long blue dress and a white french braid (and is a person of color) they'll know that it's Elsa. Reminds me of that a-hole who made a remark on the native american child.

There is no need to paint one's skin to be someone famous or known. Someone's skin is not a costume.

Early 1900s? No wonder people are so ignorant when they forget how short time ago when lynching was a regular occurrence. Also I'm glad the black people where you live are so ok with black face

Of course we have people going "but so and so have done it, what's the problem ethnic/racial minority?" Without fail. This is disgusting and an obvious caricature of black people, come on.

Hi, there's a few of us throughout the thread saying it now. My mom went to a segregated school FYI, and I've got a proper slave name for my first name, so it's kind of hard to forget this shit. Sorry not sorry.

yes, only white people have political beliefs. only white people talk about blackface

You seem angrier than anyone else here
Also I think a general good rule of thumb is that if something was extremely offensive one day being on Halloween does not make that thing suddenly ok.

wow it seems like this is a really important issue to you

You sound upset

I'm not angry or upset. Its not a really important issue to me, its just everyone always makes this a big deal.

Like its okay to dress at Hitler, or any terrible dictator, or to dress up as anything else offensive, but when it comes to this everyone loses their minds.

But thats just like me shitty opinion, so I'll just show myself out.
I asked you earlier about what you thought about people dressing up as Zwarte Piet for St. Nicholas' Eve. People use the exact same excuse for that.
Who the fuck is that anyway?

I know right?!

black people should just get over being paraded in character as niggers, jiggaboos, blackies, alligator bait, coons, etc!

I mean sure, youve been made throughout modern history to feel worthless and hate your own image, but just get over it!

Holy shit this is what I mean, calm down. It's halloween, dressing up as a Kanye West isn't even that racist, I don't get it.

Who in the world told you it was ok to dress as hitler

Dear lord I always forget how terrible these threads are. Don't give a fuck about people's opinions to where a damn costume

Quoted for truth.

Also still perpetually amazed by people who argue and then clarify that they aren't racist. Guess what, babes? If you're white in America you're a little racist. You were raised that way, in that culture. Accept it, think about it, and stop arguing for friggen flexibility and maybe listen instead.

lol

Serious question: at some point, will black people let it go? Maybe 300 years from now?

Asian people were brought here and exploited as slaves to build America's railways and as slave labor in gold mines.

There has been a history of yellow-face (e.g. The King and I) as well not to mention the continued white-washing of Asian roles in movies (e.g. Avatar, GITS, etc.) Asians generally continue to be portrayed as feminine, nerdy; they are rarely featured outside of martial arts films.

I'm not salty about it at all. My sister isn't. My mom isn't. I dunno, at some level, you gotta just it go.

Americans mocked Japanese people during WWII, rounded Japanese Americans up and put them in a camp, dropped two atomic bombs on Japan. The Japanese don't seem that salty about it.

Even if you look at China and Japan and the atrocities carried out during WWII including the Rape of Nanjing. Despite all of that, China is Japan's largest trading partner. At some point, you just gotta let it go, IMO.
Or, and I'm just throwing this out there, I know it's crazy. People could "let go" of being racist.

I am baffled at this.

Is it really that important to you that people should be able to dress in blackface because it's Halloween?

Its not a really important issue to me, its just everyone always makes this a big deal.

But you came in here for some specific reason though, right? So it's important enough to do that. And there's a possibility for you to maybe get an idea as to why it's important to other people. So you're in here, and the possibility you can learn from this is right there, but instead, you wanna fight it. So you took time out of your day to enter a discussion on a topic that isn't important to you specifically to swat at the potential for greater understanding of any sort, and then get hurt/confused when your presence isn't particularly welcomed anymore.

What about any of that makes any sense to you?

To some people telling them "no" is the worse then any other atrocity on earth.

Or telling them that they've been participating in an action that is racist.

So they have to defend that action with their lives because they're making the leap between "I was previously okay with this racist thing" and "I'm racist".

Oh for fucks sake. Does anyone read anymore? You're in a thread where people are telling exactly why it IS offensive.
What you THINK is offensive is not consequential.

Yes.
If you're just going to say yes without any follow up, then I'll just say you're being far too sensitive. There was nothing racist in Cloud Atlas, all cultures were handled with respect, there was no mockery or I'll will displayed at any time. People not liking something doesn't justify it as being racist.

For me, the intent is what matters. If the guy was honestly thinking "hey, I'd look more like Kanye if I painted my skin" rather than "lol blackface!!" then I don't have a problem with it.

The person may not be intending to come off as insensitive but their intention doesn't really matter in a case like this because they may be completely ignorant.

Specifically with Halloween or Cosplay I think it's more important as a measure of how the person perceives the character they're playing. Characters to imitate are rarely defined specifically by race and Kanye is no exception. He has 1,000 other qualities to imitate BEFORE his skin color.

Here's one right here.

I find it terrible and in poor taste. If I saw him at a party, I'd leave after making him feel stupid.
