ST. Sequel Trilogy.

ST for sequel trilogy?

I've only seen it refered to as the sequel trilogy. What else could it be called?

Sounds like there was a widely accepted one. I've never really been that into Star Wars, but this movie's got me all excited. I really didn't need to buy that Sphero BB-8, but I love watching it roll around.

I tried watching the Phantom Menace back in Jan, but I fell asleep by time the podracing scene happened.
My partner and I did the same thing over the weekend, unfortunately she wanted to finish it that morning and moved straight onto AOTC.

She's of the mindset that the prequels are only bad compared to the OT and discounting them from that they're really just average movies as opposed to awful. To be fair, I did find myself enjoying some of the visuals on AOTC and seeing alien worlds, races, etc... even if they're really boring as packages.

Let's hear the rabid oldEU fans

PT, OT and Disney's Cash-In

I can completely agree with this. I can enjoy my time with the prequels just like with any normal movie. Not classics but far FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAR from foodfight-tier abominations

I also like they story they tell, even if the execution is not that great. The animated series expand the whole saga to a wonderful world, lore and overall story for me. Something the OT alone can't do for me

A lot of times you reply to my posts that way, but this time I don't get it. It's not like I was being negative.

I have a very good feeling about this movie. I really doubt it will be anything less than good. And I'm feeling positive about episode VIII. Episode IX is the grey spot.

Regardless, nah, just sequel trilogy. The prequels don't have a condescending name.

I'm late to the welcome back party, but...

Not sure about Trevorrow (I didn't mind JW though) but Rian Johnson has a strong pedigree behind him, doesn't he? Looper was critically acclaimed.

Looper is the primary resume entry I see people talking about when they want to bring up his "credentials" but one movie is hardly proof of anything. As far as I'm concerned he's still a risky choice and I already consider Looper way overrated.
Just look at Josh Trank. Everyone was absolutely certain he was the next big thing after Chronicle and then Fantastic Four happened. Big surprise, he too was attached to a star wars film before they figured out that no, one hit does not mean good or reliable.

I think the choices for 8 and 9 deserve a little more apprehension than they get. That's not to say that theyll be bad, could be great, but I feel like people are too confident too early.

I need to watch looper. Why were they picked anyway?

Well, with Trevorrow the mindset was most likely "oh hey, he's the director of this other nostalgia revival movie that made a truckload of money, he's perfect for this shit ahuh". Rian Johnson, maybe Looper's acclaim had something to do with it.

Going by this thread, the choice for 9 already has caused a lot of apprehension, lol.

Dudes, Johnson directed the most dope episodes of Breaking Bad. Fuck Looper, I like Looper, but fuck Looper. Johnson gave us Ozymandias.

Johnson is wayyyy better than Josh Trank, and I think Brick also had to have had something to do with his getting picked. At the very least, it shows a lot of promise the way someone's debut film should.

What I dont get is why people are focusing on 8&9 already when we don't even know if 7 will be good yet. Its like people are assuming it'll be good. That's a recipe for disappointment if I've ever heard one.

I remember legitimately liking the star wars prequels movies as a kid, moreso than the original trilogy even. All the criticism and hyperbole around them seemed ridiculous over the past few years.

Well, I bought the movies the other week to rewatch before 7 and, holy crap, is the prequel trilogy bad or what. I mean, episode 1 isn't really that offensive; it's just unremarkable in the way most summer movies are unremarkable, (Podracing aside) but 2 and 3 are just painful to watch. I now regret having these in my collection.

All that said, the actual overarching narrative isn't awful and it's not like the original trilogy is particularly great either. Episode 3's take on a pop culture tragedy- where the audience knows all the points we're racing towards- is pretty cool in concept, but the execution leaves so, so much to be desired. I think if the writing, direction, and acting surrounding Anakin and Padme alone were acceptable, the prequel trilogy would be dramatically better. All the bitter taste from it comes primarily from anything to do with them or the romance.

Re:episode 9 director- I take it Brad Bird couldn't be reached for any of these? He's seriously the perfect choice for nailing this sort of feature.

Not a huge Abrams fan- I've kind of enjoyed everything I've seen of his, but none of it stuck with me. Disposable is pretty much the perfect word for his work.

Better to work with Abrams than Lindelof. Passing for Tomorrowland is pretty rough.

Incredibles 2 is fair. The first is better than any Star Wars and its his IP. That will pretty much take up his schedule for the better part of 4 years or so, though.

Theres gonna be like 20 Disney star wars movies, including spinoffs, he'll have plenty of chances to do one eventually. I wouldn't be surprised if Disney waits like 5 years after 9 and then starts on episodes 10 11 and 12

Honestly I trust kathleen kennedy with this trilogy. She is smart and won't let ep 9 go to shit. There's too much money riding on this to let one director put out something mediocre.

Relax! You actually took it in a different way than I meant. I literally just meant it as a joke, it was nothing at all personal :)

I see you're not even the most hateful toward the prequels. I respect that. You don't like them, that's fine and even understandable. I do, but I have my reasons and perspectives. But no, I don't get a super negative vibe from your stance on Star Wars, so my post was nothing to do with anything of our... past... interests.

What exaggeration? I'm a huge Star Wars fan and the prequels are some of the worst movies I have ever seen.

Like, I saw all of them opening night and thought about walking out of the first 2.

Yup. Sure I know some people somehow see them not too far off the OT. The majority of Star Wars fans everywhere you look feel embarrassed about the prequels. They were just poor. No amount of trying to guilt me and calling me out on hyperbole is going to change the fact THEY ARE FUCKING SHIT.
