Halo 5: Guardians |OT| The Trials of Osiris

Hope you guys are enjoying Halo 5! We are really proud of the work 343i accomplished with this game and we hope this game will satisfy long time Halo fans and those that are new to series. And maybe, I'll see some of you guys in the arena online! ;)

The game is absolutely fantastic and is a wonderful addition to the Xbox One lineup.

BTW, welcome to GAF. Great to have you here.

The level design is like Halo 4's, except with lots of different paths to take and secret areas everywhere. Using the shoulder charge to open up hidden tunnels is a constant thing throughout, and it adds a lot. It's not nonlinear by any means (Halo never really has been), but it feels like there's a world to explore. You can actually get lost. It's kind of remarkable really how much work they put into it.

Lol.

Guardians have been around in halo since forever.

Ever heard of "killed by the guardians"?

As far as Osiris goes, I'm sure there's some extended lore reasons.

Cheers Phil, it has been a blast so far, great work! Keep bringing us awesome games :D

I won't go easy if I see you online sorry!

So...

The Bad:

1) shotguns suck, especially the not-human one. I mean, we haven't had a good once since Halo 1, so maybe I shouldn't feel too bad, but I do.
2) not enough "observe/plan/shoot" encounters that define Halo; more like "continually move forward into a Killzone/Call of Duty-esque fight arena."
3) not using the Halo Shield Beep and going with something way less original
4) I thought I was supposed to get a cool skin thing when I bought the game from Best Buy. I did not. What gives?
5) Enemies are too spongey relative to the damage they output. Knights can OHK you on Heroic
6) Checkpointing is bad--one checkpoint had my entire fireteam down with half a second to save one of them, and the only way to fix it was to restart the entire level.
7) Why is Kelly speaking with a British accent when she grew up in the same place as all the other kids? This is Halo 5's "How do the Fallen Know What Wolves Are," clearly.
8) What is the Domain and why should I care? Is this more of that "you have to read the novels" stuff? Because ew.

Honestly? Heroic is garbage, just like it was in Halo 4. Halo Reach had Heroic perfected to a science. It's like that difficulty was made just for me. Here? I'm going down every minute or two. I can't play Halo like Halo. Instead I have to hide behind cover and shit, which isn't a fucking Halo game.

The Good

1) Kills feel great when they happen.
2) Sounds are nice and punchy.
3) Particles are off the chain.
4) 60 FPS was a good call.
5) This game looks gorgeous.
6) That rocket punch/groundpound thing is pretty neat.
7) The cutscenes manage to make every spartan look super cool.

Overall:

The difficulty balance and checkpointing is awful. A lot of stuff that makes Halo Halo isn't... really at the fore, if present at all. ADS is terrible because it supports the whole "hang back and pick enemies off" rather than "get right in there and wreck things" approach. The fights feel really nice when you're winning, but there are way too many enemies who can just like "oh hi let me drop you in a single hit" right now, and that's utterly destroying my fun.

Seriously, what is it with 343 and awful difficulty balance? Halo 4 was this way too: normal is way too easy, and Heroic is like "almost Legendary but not." Chatting with some friends going through Halo CE, they were remarking that Legendary feels unusually difficult as well, like the difficulty got changed. What's 343's problem?

And how do the Fallen know what wolves are?

Heroic feels like heroic to me dude! I go down when I'm pushing my luck and staying out under fire for too long. I found it pretty satisfying treating enemies in 'runs' kinda like the intro - combo'ing between one enemy to the next but passing between cover inbetween just long enough to recharge.

Can't wait to play again tonight! Good work 343 and xbox team.

Going to bed champion 49 and fully expect to be onyx when i wake up :p. Game is very fun going to play it more casually though. Think my brothers willl enjoy arena and the co-op campaign.

Eurogamer Campaign piece sounds brilliant, well done to 343.

Also been impressed by what I've seen of the multiplayer for the entire marketing campaign, good info drops marking out key complaints fans had from Reach - 4. Solid beats around Arena, Ranking, Map Control and a general level playing field in the Arena space.

Will probably buy an X1 once my financial situation gets a bit less London.

huh I get the same feedback like always when saving a screenshot, but they don't show up on xbox.com

For Forza 6 it was like this before release, but afterwards they all showed up.

At first I thought it wouldn't let me save them because I was playing before release. But I tried this morning (UK here) and when I select my Halo 5 screenshots and click save, it comes up with an error saying unable to save any of the screenshots :/

One encounter, I fired an entire eight rounds or so from some weapon with lock-on without even denting an elite's shields. I ran off to go get a different gun and some more ammo. Came back to find that my fireteam, who had engaged the elite as I left, had not only failed to down the elite, but one of them had been downed in the process.

It's one elite.

One.

jfc.

I have only played the first mission and part of the second. It's Halo, but more open, with more verticality, cunning AI and gameplay better than it has ever been before... period.

I've played as much as you and I'm not seeing "more open" at all. It has more verticality than Halo 4, for sure, but not more than some of the levels in the first four and ODST.

It's got better feedback than ever before. The gameplay is more or less the same, with some dumb tuning, bad checkpointing, and encounter design that's less about observation and planning and more about "just kinda get into the thick of it but spend your time behind cover please." Also the guns overall don't seem to have the same damage output as before.

I'm getting it more or less any time I feel like I should be able to do something I pulled off in Reach on the same difficulty. I'm not able to be daring the way I was in Reach, which is disappointing.

Please do contract Obsidian to make an Halo rpg.

Welcome to Gaf.

If body shots mattered maybe. If they're not down with two shots after their shield is out I'm not gonna bother.

Yeah, I guess.

But overall it's not really up for debate. Pistol is the go to weapon.

Just gotta practice practice practice and get good with it. AR is good for very close quarter battles.

Hey look who showed up :) Welcome to gaf and you guys deserve a big thumbs up here!

My digital copy is installed but it still says preordered then it sends me to the store.

Try a hard reset? It should be out everywhere in the world now.

I woke up 5.30am to play ten matches of arena. This honestly feels like the best multiplayer FPS since 1998 - 2001 (when the Tribes games were released on PC).

They have ticked all the right boxes for me. Dedicated servers, 60 fps, fast movement options, gunplay, arena map design etc...

And this comes from someone who pretty much ignored every Halo game until MCC.

I am having a lot of fun. Played the first few campaign missions then went into multiplayer. I'm now ranked platinum in Team Slayer. Thing is, I keep getting teammates that go negative. I've had quite a few games where I'm the only one positive or only one other player on my team is positive. It's getting really annoying.

Oh, and Plaza is my favorite map so far.

There is a slayer playlist...

Yep I'm a dumbass don't know why I didn't see that option earlier.

Some quick first night impressions:

Campaign is excellent, about halfway into it. I'm not sure if I like the story direction but the combat has been great so far. Still waiting for some really huge encounters though.
Arena MP has that challenging but fair factor that the older Halo games had. The change in auto aim really makes this such a more skill based game than Halo 4. Matchmaking is fast so far too.
Warzone seems great although I admit I wasn't totally sure what was going on. Probably gonna take a few games to settle in.
I'm having hard time adjusting to the controls but I think that's to be expected. Keep throwing grenades instead of sprinting, and meleeing instead of reloading,

Completed the first two missions so far and I'm having a blast. The combat feels amazing. Looking forward to diving into the Arena right after the campaign!

Yeeeeaaah, not enjoying the spawning on FFA. I think I got spawned in the same spot near the Sniper spawn on Origin a good 5 consecutive times. That rocky area having a near constant firefight going on there certainly didn't help it.

Slowly getting a hang of the mechanics, but my main hurdle is adjusting to the aiming sensitivity right now. Team Arena is definitely my jam.

I think the AR feels just right. It was basically useless in other Halo games.

On smaller maps the AR charge is way too effective. Especially if they ADS which seems to give a tighter spread range despite what they said about cosmetic.
I only played like 4 games though so maybe I just need to figure out how to deal with them a bit better.

As I am working could someone tell me how good getting into and out of Multiplayer is and whether its buggy?

It's been fast and smooth for me, I'm in the USA on the East Coast. I've played 19 multiplayer matches and haven't encountered any bugs, but I did have one disconnect.

*shrug* Hasn't really been an issue for me.

I may be wrong but the AR in the Beta was a monster, seems to me they have toned down the TTK a tad but it's still very very good. Maybe I'm remembering incorrectly though.
