Halo 5: Guardians |OT| The Trials of Osiris

I've still not played on truth. Please hurry up and remove Orion and get truth, Eden and empire into the slayer playlist.

Okay, dumbest question ever...but I want to be prepared.

I played a match of CTF, and a teammate had the flag, was right by the spot our flag appears, but just bumbled around. He died, someone else picked up up, same thing.

So...what button do I use to plant the flag? I never had it myself, and now I'm thinking it's not an obvious choice.

You just walk over your flag once it's there.

Can't return the flag while yours is also away.

Having just completed the game, I have some observations:

1. The encounters are big, 343 have really taken the corridor criticisms to heart.

2. Most of the guns feel great to fire.

3. there is true verticality to the levels.

4. Looks good, and runs smooth.

However,

5. The story is a bit of a mess, and the game seems to have an aversion from dwelling on dramatic or emotional moments.
It will just fade slowly out and change scene, leaving the drama hanging in the air. The walk-around-and-talk-levels are also very half baked.

Also MAJOR STORY SPOILER:
Cortana comes across as slightly stupid and pathetic in the way she deals with the Warden. Add to that the fact that she does seem to be acting out of character, and I don't find the story to be very believable.

Furthermore (Minor story structure spoiler)
I feel that The plot is unfocused as a whole. Most of the development comes in the Chief-levels, and there are few of those. The Locke-levels are mostly tangents that never really go anywhere.

6. Mission design seems to lack variation. Most of the objectives involve pressing buttons or clearing a mass of enemies so that you may proceed.
This isn't unusual in a shooter, but you really feel the lack of variation here. While the game is frequently visually impressive, I don't feel like there are very many interesting missions in the game.

7. Guns that you pick up have too little ammunition in them. This makes them less attractive to pick up, as you might run out of ammo without being able to refill.

8. Enemies have indistinctive death animations. On several occasions I believed I had killed an enemy only for him to keep firing on me. It is in general also very hard to know how close an enemy is to death.
Enemy vehicles have too much health, and take too long to kill, even with heavy weapons.

Mission 5

Oh hellzzzzzzzzzzz yeaaaaaaah,
Warden Eternal is a goner. I took my chance when he had his back turned to me and I used my SAW to its full potential on the orb on his back and that was enough to kill him. Man I was like.... WTF, he's a goner already? So it really is indeed all about that orb. The fight didn't last 2 minutes.

THis fight could have made me go back to Heroic but now I have all the motivation to go on with Legendary.

Re: Waaghals. IDK why the fuck the me quoting your post didn't also keep your spoiler tags...

It's fairly obvious Cortana is acting out of character because she is not the same Cortana we knew. She may have found the power to everlasting life for all AIs, but with that same power, she's gone mad and wants to wipe all violence in the galaxy with well...violence.

And yeah, all Locke/Osiris team missions are so ancillary it's funny that all the marketing was put behind Locke v. Chief when it's literally 2 minutes of that.

Multiplayer is awesome, but man, the campaign couldn't be more disappointing.

I like the Halo campaigns, and something about this one feels off. The further I get the more I dislike it. It's not about any of the changes they've made to the way it plays, that's all cool, but just the story, level design, and mission structure is just super poor to me. :(

I'm the opposite - I am totally into this campaign. I am LOVING it, it's really grown on me. I'm ranking this up as my 2nd favourite single player halo experience (behind CE, because nothing will ever top that first time you drive a Warthog and all the marines jump in). Mission 8 or 9 at the mo'.

I think this is an absolutely fantastic entry in the Halo series, brilliant.

Can't return the flag while yours is also away.

Ohhhhhh, I had no idea! That's super interesting (and was totally the problem).

Thanks for the help, it's the first Halo MP experience I've had (got into the series just last year with MCC, and MP was too much of a hodge lodge of modes and games and rulesets).

Right .Gripe moment number two. As someone new to the series I have to say that warthog control is a bit of a joke. There is no logic at all to the way these things are supposed to be moved. Strange.

I think the warthog control in this one is the tightest yet.

Turn the camera in the direction you want the 'hog to go, accelerate, and off you go. Easy. Left trigger to brake and do a hard turn or skid (ideal for taking out groups of enemies).

If you're not used to the "drive where the camera points" model then yes I get why it would feel odd but trust me it's awesome - the 'hog will pull off some crazy turns to keep you happy.

agreed, it's awful. I rely on radar and the maps are so big in Warzone that you get shot constantly with no red dots.

I agree

Above and below you. Also, get headphones.

Luckily I have headphones to hear them walking up behind me but if I have a radar they shouldn't be able to get so close without notification. I mean how far in the future is this that it can't have a bigger range like the older games.

So I'm playing through Mission 5 right now and just laughing to myself because I remember a lot of complaints about the game's graphics before it came out. This is gorgeous. Like jaw-droppingly beautiful. I don't even need Halo games to ever look better than this.

I agree

I say this again. Halo is/was the only widely played competitive FPS game that has a radar system that isn't part of a perk/ability/power-up mechanic.

I'm glad they finally got caught up with the times.

They should've fully committed and have MP with no radar.

REQ packs are an addiction. I can feel the endorphin high when I open a Silver.

Oh, and Ravening Sliver + Speed Boost = lulz. I can't even imagine what wielding the new Prophet's Bane is like.

Warzone:
-Fireteam members should show up as green on radar as well as their service tags (BF4).
-Friendly Marines, AI should show up as different color (Titanfall).
-Capturing bases and holding them should mean something.( More points while 2 bases capped).
-Lower points from AI Legendary kills to 100-75 and randomize spawns for them.

Agree with all of this entirely. Would make Warzone such a better game.

Wish it was possible to tell someone at 343 this. With the way warzone is currently plays, it feels a bit like pot luck who wins because it's pot luck who kills the AI bosses.

Yep, I'm with you. Honestly, I think everything is the best it's ever been - from level design to gameplay to story.

I feel like 343 addressed the complaints regarding Promethean Knights admirably, but then they introduced Soldiers and completely forgot those previous complaints.

And be like every other FPS? lol no

I don't have Halo 5, but I was watching some multiplayer videos earlier. Does it bother anyone else that at the start of Breakout, the Spartans pull their weapons over their back, but once in first-person mode, the gun appears from the bottom of the screen?

Just a super small annoyance, haha.

Finished campaign. Very interesting. Very interesting indeed.
Mission 14 reminded me of the first time Cortana accessed Installation 04's files.

Looking forward to Halo 6.

So I found a special named shotgun in the second campaign mission.

Are there more of these things in every level?

Its limited in terms of ammo, and finding more shotguns wouldn't replenish it so you can't just dominate everything. Pretty cool inclusion.

Motion tracker has been in since CE. Just saying. Aside from competitive hardcore play, it's been used since the beginning. You'll never see it go away without giant backlash. Right now, you always see the vocal minority be against motion tracker, and it was amplified during beta because it was too powerful, now it's near useless, and you're seeing it reversed. Removing it entirely, you'll probably see the decision criticized on a much larger scale. Maybe it's time that alternative options are looked at (Destiny, Call of Duty, sight or sound based etc.)

I'd probably rather have no motion tracker at all, rather than a useless extreme close quarters one.

Fathom is the best map in the game right now. Plays really well.
For real it is. Like, I cannot even stress how much better Fathom is than the rest.

-The overall layout is actually quite simple and not overcomplicated like some 343 maps tend to be, while still offering enough options and cover to be satisfying. When it comes to overall layout, less is often more. It's something Bungie usually (but not always) did well at.
-The details of the map are distributed well. They still get to go nuts with the wall detail but they also leave a lot of open spaces as well. There are places for my eyes to rest. It avoids the problem of becoming 'Generic Metal and Tubes Map #6' due to avoiding clutter. Some other maps are way too cluttered to be pleasing to the eye.
-The lighting is a bit more clear and straightforward. There aren't lighting changes and shadows every four feet so it's easily readable at a glance. Some maps, 343 likes to get a little too crazy with the lighting to the point that everything looks different every 10 steps.
-And the ambiance. Oh my god. The big ocean windows with the soft lighting, all the local sounds and the whale noises. The map has more personality in one corner than some entire maps.

343 should apply the design philosophies of this map to all future maps. Keep the overall layout simple, avoid clutter, prioritize readability over flashy lighting, and really push ambiance.

That's the kind of stuff that has people still fondly remembering some of Bungie's maps 10 years later.

Yeah, in the last mission, there was a sword called the "Vorpal Blade" or something like that. There seem to be special weapons throughout the campaign.

Yes. There is a legendary scattershot, a needler, a shotgun, a sniper rifle, a fuel rod gun that I've found etc.

Well... It looks good for sure, but damn that good? For starters in several places in that mission some nasty aliasing is visible and it makes the overall PQ worse. It definitely is a step up from Halo 4 but not a world of difference. I honestly would not call it jaw-dropping beautiful though. And I can never agree on that last part, I want Halo 6 to look A LOT better. Take Killzone SF for example, I would not mind it at all if Halo 6 can look like that or better. IMO that game is truly a beautiful Sci Fi shooter, just suck ass gameplay though.

death cams in this game are really antiquated. don't like how you'll just drop dead and you can't turn the camera.

I'd hazard a guess this is by design, the pro teams would give feedback the camera shouldn't give situational awareness. That's a wild guess I feel is likely to be accurate.

In campaign you can still move the camera in coop. Oh by the way coop is fucking great!
