21:9 Gaming Thread | That cinematic feel

I just bought a 34UM95 and I'm having a bit of trouble.

Certain games just don't play nice with it. Bioshock Infinite crashes every time I try to open it, and other games just don't run well enough on my GPU to play with full 21:9. In those instances I want to play those games in 16:9 with black bars but outside of CS:GO I'm having a hard time making it happen. For example, in the original Crysis I can't get the game to play in 16:9. I went to my nvidia control panel and selected No Scaling and it still stretches when I select 2560x1440.

How can I resolve this?

Sooo, I am about to bite the bullet with the LG29UM 67, its on a limited discount here in Brazil and since our currency is in the gutter, it will take a loooong while to have that monitor in the price rage currently is.

Couple of questions though:

Is this monitor good enough?

Is the LG34UM 67 that much better? Its about 1000 reais more expensive (250$).

Can I use Freesync with a Nvidia card?

I have one and like it well enough. It's only 75Hz, but I'm not having any issues with it as I don't play competitively. The IPS panel is nice, colors really pop, and I think 29" is the largest I would go at 2560X1080. Any larger and low pixel density really starts to show.

As much as I'm excited about Acer's new 21:9 G-Sync monitor lineup there's no perfect solution. Each one sacrifices at least one thing. I prefer the (slightly) larger size and 144-200Hz refresh rate of the Acer Predator Z35 but I'm turned off by the 2560x1080 resolution and VA panel. On the Acer Predator X34 I prefer the 3440x1440 and IPS panel but don't like the slower refresh rates of 75-100Hz. I recently overclocked my 29" LG 29EA93 to run at 77Hz and I honestly don't notice much difference over 60Hz. Perhaps the X34 overclocked to 100Hz coupled with G-sync will make a big enough difference. Unfortunately 3440x1440 at 200Hz probably won't be viable until displayport 1.4 becomes standard.

Anyone tried using a PS4 on their 21:9 1440 monitor? Wondering how the ps4 looks upscaled to 16:9 2560x1440. Would there be noticeable upscaling artifacts?

I haven't tried on a 3440x1440 monitor.

But I have tried it on a 2560x1440.
It looks pretty good, however there are upscaling artifacts, there always will be.
You only really notice it on text but its there.
Depends on how far you sit from the screen, the closer you sit the more you will notice.

Yeah, just tried it out since I happened to have my PS4 system unplugged from the TV today. It's a bit less sharper. There's some pixel crawl and there's a slight blur all over the screen, but it's ok. It's the same as playing sub hd ps3 games on 1080p tv.

doesn't the PS4 stretch the image if it's not the correct aspect ratio?

I can choose between force stretch and native/16:9 AR on my monitor.

I have been interested in 21:9 for a while but assumed it would be a distant plan. Then my wife and I were walking through Best Buy today and she saw one of the ultrawides on display and thought it looked like a great idea - we currently have a pair of 24" monitors (which she loves) but the thought of one larger monitor appealed to her.

Needless to say I stroked my chin and said "well I guess, anything for you honey, we should look into it" and she asked if Dell sold any, since that would be easy to order. So now I'm looking at the U3415W to move this process along ASAP and it seems like a good monitor. I see some of you in this thread have or had one, any thoughts?

Mainly, I don't keep up on this tech at all so I want to know if getting a U3415W now makes sense or if there is something else coming along in a few months that I should wait on.

EDIT: oh, and is a 970 enough to push those resolutions for games? I have 1080p monitors now so I've never thought about it before.

There will always be "the next best thing"
I would recommend getting what you think is right for you at the current time of looking.
There is a G-Sync monitor coming out soon (in fact in some territories already out in a very limited stock), which if gaming on a NVidia card is a big priority for you then I'd recommend that.
However please keep in mind the price for those will be a lot more money than the U3415W.
If you are on the fence about the Dell U3415W this TFT Central review will give you a rough idea what to expect from it.

Yes if you are willing to knock down graphical settings to achieve your target frame-rate.
Don't expect to run all games max with that resolution, I don't think any single GPU is up for that task at the moment. SLI set-ups shouldn't have a problem.
Once again if you go for a G-Sync model then that will help quite a bit.

check slickdeals for that dell monitor and wait for a good deal

It was for pre-order Tuesday. I was able to preorder then. I'm hoping it ships the 13th. I live in SoCal so I hope delivery is fast as well

10/12: per newegg, shipped today.

Oh I bought it and am loving it already.
The only thing is that I thinking about buying a AMD card, but I am worried about the future of the company and later support...

Oh did any one say Ultra:Wide gaming?

It is glorious but pain on the ass at the same time as to this day limited number of games support it, and performance drops significantly on some games.

But when it works, it WORKS! Coupled with that desktop real estate.

Awesome, but are you not spanning games across all 3?

LoL, at a point its just too wide.

Seeing as most games suffers from "Fisheye effect" on my 3 16:9, I can only imagine how horrible it would be on 3 21:9

Any news on the X34 G-Sync?

The X34 has been released. Very limited supply though. I so want to get my hands on one.

^
Has it been reviewed already? I suppose it's really close -if not the same- as the FreeSync one isn't it?

Edit: Nevermind, found the TFT One.

The only thing is that I thinking about buying a AMD card, but I am worried about the future of the company and later support...

I've had no issues out of the AMD card I bought earlier this year (290X... got it before the 390s were announced.)

As far as the future in concerned, that's anyone's guess. I never planned on having this card for more than two years anyway, though...

Glad you're enjoying your monitor. If you do get an AMD card, Freesync is pretty damned cool.

Im planning on buying a 21:9 34", but im still not sure how many games support it. I read so much conflicting information, any info on this would be appreciated.

Most games unless they're quite old. Of the games I play:

MGS 5 - supports (though you gotta download a modified .exe)
GTA V - supports
Witcher 3 - supports
Payday 2 - supports
Star Wars Battlefront (beta) - supports
Batman Arkham Knight - supports

I wouldn't not buy one because of fear of support unless you play a ton of old games.

To further that... out of the games I've played recently, here's my experience:

Mad Max - supports
Borderlands 2 - supports
Metro Last Light Redux - supports
Battlefield 4 - supports
Rocket League - supports
Diablo 3 - supports
Torchlight 2 - supports
The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing - supports

Bastion - no support (16:9 only, pillarboxing to fill sides)

In my experience, the worst case scenario is that you end up with a 2560x1440 screen with black bars on the sides. It's rare that I find a game that doesn't support it, and most of those games are small indie titles. And.... Ubisoft games.

i'm not jelli at all.
i think you are stupid wasting your cash like that...

nope i'm definitely jelli jellz awesome setup man!

Yea I saw this earlier today. Made my bank account cry enough taers to form a waterfall.

My problem is availability, not bank account. They couldn't keep these monitors in stock to save their life. They could probably increase the price by $200 and they'd still sell out immediately. People want gsync...

Here's something I typed up for another member
---
've the rog swift for over a year, purchased in oct 2014.

ips vs tn - the ips is better better colorwise. If the ips was 10/10, the tn is 8/10

The viewing angles are MUCH better. I slouch or otherwise never look at my monitors head-on. The viewing angles of the swift's TN were abysmalcompared to the ips of the x34

Build quality is about the same, no difference there.

144fps + ulmb vs 100fps + 21:9 - This part is up to you. I believe the 21:9 is much more worth it over 144. But playing csgo on ulmb was practically cheating.

21:9 vs 16:9 - this is the money here. this the reason why everyone wants this monitor. 21:9 is like the jump from non-gsync to gsync. It's not going to blow you away at first, but over time you realize why its so much better. I also believe is better for day to day use as well, not just gaming. I can write papers side by side on one monitor. I actually only use 1 monitor now, I sold everything else.

Price - 1300 + tax. Ouch. I sold 2 of my rogs so I spent about 400 out of pocket for the upgrade. Yes for me it was worth it, but you do need at least a 980ti to power games. I definately would question buying this monitor if you had anything less than a 980ti. I have 980ti SLI, and cod:aw goes from 40-60fps to 80-90 fps in SLI.

21:9 game support: Most newer games can support 21:9, BUT most games do not have a 21:9 UI, and the cutscenes (in-game/fmv) are still in 16:9. Its something you get used to. Some games will never work right. The Evil WIthin is notorious for this, and phantom pain keeps breaking because komani keeps patching the game.

Here's my youtube channel. I just started recording games in 21:9
