RPCS3 Is A New PS3 Emulator, Still In Early Stage, Boots Commercial Game

Oh nice I wasn't thinking anyone would be testing it. I figure that'd be a nice early target to go for since the game is relatively simple.
Edit: Went through the trouble of learning to compile everything and then I realize I don't know how i'm going to rip my games. Is there anyways to get some of PSN stuff to my PC somehow?

I forget where but there's a list of PSN ftp links that let you download F2P games like Dust 514.

You can download all PSN stuff straight to your PS3 or PC if you have the link. Paid for content requires a rap file (basically a file which contains your details and confirms that you have paid for the content). You need a CFW PS3 to access your rap files. Some free content such as demos or demos which can be upgraded to the full game do not require a rap file.

Hadn't realized they had gotten the recompiler up and running already. This is incredibly impressive. Come a long way since it's early debugging days.

Nice progress, I can almost feel playing RDR at 4k in 2025

Or just buy the inevitable HD remaster on PS4, or better yet the HD'ier remaster on PS5...

This emu will be good for preserving Japanese stuff at least! I don't see Disgaea 3 coming to PC

I wonder which has the best effective potential - Xenia or RPCS3. I could imagine it's super tough trying to emulate the Cell.

The people behind Xenia have been making huge improvements over very little time. I'm no doct... programmer, but I have to assume that trying to emulate the Xbox 360's PowerPC Xenon CPU is not as complex as tackling the PS3's Cell processor. I mean, even professional developers had their fair share of issues when coding for Sony's CPU...

Either way, both emulators have a very good outlook, if you ask me.

Actually, it's pretty much one person behind Xenia, which makes it even more impressive.

If I had to bet, the Vita versions will be emulated first.

Vita emulation will take a while. The Vita is still not fully hacked, making it harder to study how it works. Also, there are relatively few vita exclusives that are 'must haves', making the demand for a Vita emulator not particularly high.

Right now Xenia does. RPCS3 sadly appears to be having some development issues which I have been meaning to post about. Last year one of the main developers AlexAltea stopped working on the project after starting his own separate PS3 emulator called Nucleus. So far he is the only Nucleus developer and I haven't seen any playable results from it yet. Later on in May another RPCS3 developer stated that that some bad decisions were made early on with the RPCS3 code base and that ultimately it would require a complete rewrite of the program. He also mentioned he was thinking about working privately on another new PS3 emulator with some other developers that was meant to fix the issues he was having with RPCS3. I have not seen any further information about this emulator since then. Throughout all this RPCS3 development has continued although progress does appear to have slowed down compared to the activity that was happening in 2014. Whether or not RPCS3 ever gets to a state of maturity at this point seems to be up in the air.

we are more likkely to get RDR on Xenia 360 playable before we can get anything stable on the Ps3 emulation side from the looks of it :|

developer announced yesterday more games at seamless 60fps with no audio issues.

Holy shit. That is awesome.

Things like DX12 and Vulkan are going to be great for emulators.

Definitely. But I find anything booting and running at native framerate to be pretty cool.

RPCS3 0.0.0.6 has been released.

DX12 support (and in future Vulkan) has been added and there's now a recompiler. There's been lots of improvements to HLE and some improvements to the GUI (including game icons!). Definently no reccomended version is ready yet, but a year or two and we might be getting there :)

Regular pre-release builds built by @Bigpet can be found here:
https://github.com/Bigpet/rpcs3/releases

Also a (now removed) note from the initial release post:

Some people still believe that we were going to abandon this and there would be a big rewrite. This was said by only one developer, and there is no need for a big rewrite as of now.

RPCS3 0.0.6 has been released.

Also a note from the release post:

Is it in a enough stable state for the regular Joe to try his hand at it or is this more of a first release for people to prod at , expect not to play uncharted tlou anytime soon type of release .

Either way , the fact the project is already far enough that they consider it can be put up for download in such a relative short amount of time is amazing .

The second one. RPCS3 is still way too early for pretty much any practical use yet.

If they get this working to an adequate level then Sony has no excuse for no B/C outside of wanting to push PS Now. Honestly I feel BC and PS Now can coexist.

Let's see if they can get this working to an adequate level on a 1.6 GHz AMD CPU.

But let's assume Sony can emulate the PPC on the Cell just fine (the Xbox One BC suggests it's possible). Would you be okay if basically no games that use the Cell's SPU's work? Almost no first party games, no major third party games after the first two years of the system's life. Sony walks up on stage and announces BC finally! But only for 2D PSN games and Idea Factory RPGs.

After the first year, Sony put out Edge tools which ran on the SPUs to help with geometry processing and practically everything 3D used it. It's why the PS3 version of games usually had an extra frame of lag. I got the impression those tools had to be built into the game, so just doing a library replacement probably won't work. Even if it's just one SPU, the Jaguar would still have to be able to keep up with it on a single core (can't automatically split execution across cores).

Pics aren't showing, but I'm sure there's a joke about Silent Hill HD collection and corrupted graphics in there somewhere.

They are spoiler tagged for some reason. Click them to see the images.

This is some really impressive stuff though. Nice to see good progress is still happening.

I hope this takes off, my bro took my CFW PS3 with him when he got married and I miss Yakuza already. My cousin has a CFW PS3 of his own but he wants 350$ for it.

Good, now show me a rig using current PC parts that can run even demanding games on this reliably up to 60fps (which everyone obsesses about these days) while maintaining a reasonable cost.

You're talking a good few years to match the console's original performance on exclusives and several years to boost performance above standard reliably due to the cell's architecture.

In short, you're better off sticking with the real PS3 for now for exclusives. Obviously for multiplatform games get them on PC cheaply if you can, but beware of shoddy optimisation and DRM. There are a few well known shockingly bad PC ports.

Who are you directing this at?

No-one, just trying to keep hype in check.

What was the point of the first post considering the emulator just recently was able to do 3d?

Of course you are better off sticking with a real ps3, the emulator barely runs anything
