Skyrim looked a lot better for its time than FO4 imo, at least from the bit I've seen. When Skyrim came out it was pretty much the best of open world graphics. The same can't be said of FO4
I've mentioned this a billion times in this thread, lmao. That's the whole reason we're even having this talk. People used to be more understanding toward the questionable aspects of these game's presentations, before The Witcher 3 (the sole superior-looking 'open world RPG', and the main reason for the wholly different conversation this time around) released, took the arbitrary "AAA open world rpg" checklist, and scribled "industry leading graphics" onto it. Now, people expect 'industry leading visuals', regardless of context, design priorities and impact, available resources, opportunity costs, because 'AAA millions $60' blah blah blah
Great locations, graphics, animations and the gameplay on show looks really gun.
Overall a game that looks like it's coming out in 2011, compared to Fallout 3/NV which were great games but definitely not up with most presentation standards of their time.

Actually I don't think it's visually - art, models and animation aside - much of an improvement over Oblivion; definitely nowhere near Witcher 2. The trailer is still great though.
Ohh god we had Witcher 2 comparisons in the Skyrim reveal thread.
The world is truly a circle.
- no generational transition skewing expectations
- no directly comparable game occupying the same 'niche', as is (arguably) the case with Fallout 4 and Witcher 3
- the game in question having been a realization of 5 years of work and improvement on the baseline development platforms of choice, 360 and PS3 as opposed to their first effort on the consoles
- people were more amenable toward Skyrim's art style changes from Oblivion over Fallout 4's art style changes over Fallout 3, particularly the enhanced color pallate and more stylized look
- that trailer is frankly ten times more epic and visually stimulating than Fallout's were
I really think that most of the disappointment toward this game's visuals are overblown and that Fallout 4, on a technical basis, is every bit as competitive as its predecessors were, and at the very least, I feel like directly comparing both games to contemporary games of their particular eras backs this up. We'll have a lot more to go on in a week when this game is in more people's hands, thankfully.
There is NO competition for Bethesda. Itll blow every other rpg this year in the windI just don't get it. Skyrim looked great for the time...why have they suddenly fallen behind the competition in terms of graphics?
This is just wrong. Bethesda has more comepetition than ever.

A bit too late for that. lol.
A bit too late for that. lol.How about we wait for release before we start going crazy?
I don't even care any more. I regret ever coming in here.
Been watching the stream. Game looks a bit better in motion. The closeups in game obviously highlight the flaws.
neogaf tagline.
not really, but these threads don't help
You seriously think that w3 will Sell more than fallout? And this is based on what facts? Your hopes and dreams?
I'm seriously doubting it will take out W3.
Oblivion was a game where dungeons were copy/ pasted like 5-10 times each throughout the game.
In Skyrim no two dungeons were the same. They just had the same assets. This is the problem that I have with a lot of people's "criticism". When it's on point it's fine but too often it's either hyperbole or just plain uninformed or wrong.
you can have a million unique dungeons. when they all feel exactly the fucking same, that's where you have your problem.
You seriously think that w3 will Sell more than fallout?
I cant deal with it anymore i want the game now...
With using the term "take it out" I think most people would assume with sales. No one is saying TW3 looks worse...You made a response to someone specifically saying that fallout 4 has fallen behind on the front of graphics, so I have no idea why you are suddenly taking about sales.
Any word on performance and optimization for the PC version?

Really surprised Bethesda doesn't have their own channel streaming on twitch or something. Perhaps their marketing team is behind the times. Instead of fighting the streamers they should have set up their own stream ahead of time.
And why would they want to spoil the whole game rather than letting You Play it for yourself?Really surprised Bethesda doesn't have their own channel streaming on twitch or something. They really don't want anyone to know anything about the story/quests. They've deliberately only shown the first town in media so far. Pete Hines said something about how he was sad people were opening their Christmas presents early.
Why would they have to be doing quests or anything like that? Could just be running around explaining the systems.
So they just run around Columbia ignoring all quests but spoiling game systems? Doesn't make sense to me.
"spoiling game systems" I don't even know what that means. Nothing that would not be in a game manual, if games actual had those these days. Unless you think home improvement shows "spoil" the experience of do-it-yourself construction.
Basically, if there's something new in the game, I'd prefer not to know about it until I get to use it myself. Then it's new and unexpected, instead of expected.
I get a little tired about this 'it's a game with a massive scale so it can't be compared to any other game' nonsense. It's as if loading a page from Wikipedia is allowed to take a lot of time because the archive is massive. The scale of the game is massive, but that has nothing to do with whether a texture on a wall is looking like wallpaper or that there are no shadows where there should be etc. If you think they have every little object the player can interact with in memory at any given time, you're mistaken. The player is at a given point in the world space and the elements in that close area are loaded, like in any other open world game. The player points the cursor on an element in world space, the engine detects an interactable container and looks up what it is in its in-memory 'database' (not really a database, but you get the idea). if there are 1000 or 1million, that's not important. If that slows down your game engine that much that there's no frame budget anymore to use a couple more shaders or push a bit more polygons, you have bigger problems. The particular type of sandbox game that Bethesda makes isn't a 'huge thing' and has never been. In fact, I dare you to name sandboxes that are anything like Fallout or Elder Scrolls, much less one that compares favorably on a visual level. And in the past, that fact has helped to protect these games from unflattering direct comparisons, because people understood that to a certain point there were tradeoffs when it came to massive scale.
I don't think people base their judgment solely on a couple of screenshots, they also take into account Bethesda's trackrecord from previous games, especially their last ones. FO4 costs 59.95 EURO here on Steam. I could perhaps get a cheaper key through a shady key seller, but do the devs get any money from that route? Doubtful. So if I want to legitimately want to buy the game using the official channels I'm paying a premium price. That's OK, it's just that I then compare it with the games that also demand that premium price. If I go to the store and pick up a PS4 copy, it's cheaper. That's with the console tax included. You hear 'AAA' and an arbitrary checklist of things pops up in your head that an AAA game must achieve, 'because reasons!'. Now that Witcher 3 has brought that expectation of industry leading visuals over to the open world RPG side, you expect that shit from every competitor, no matter their individual capability as devs, the opportunity costs associated with their choice of development routes, or how they choose to appropriate their resources and prioritize particular elements of their design over others. It's like, what little we know about this game so far partly includes that it's absolutely chock full of content, but people are letting their exaggerated disappointment with the visuals color their entire perception of the game, without even stopping to consider that perhaps these visuals are the result of compromises that have enabled a stronger game or more content-filled game in other areas relevant to Bethesda's direction with fallout.
So this game gets shit on for not pushing the next gen graphic barrier but Bloodborne's graphics keeps getting defended around here?
Graphics dont bother me at all, but the hypocrisy is huge here

This is a bit off topic, but I just wanted to crosspost (from the spoiler thread) that if you use a VPN to NZ, the PC game will be unlockable on Steam 13.00 november 9th in western Europe, or 7.00 november 9th in the US.

Then don't watch a stream? I don't think they need to babysit the internet for people with low impulse control.

Cool, thanks. Time to find a good VPN. I think you might be an hour off, though. This time converter says that midnight in New Zealand is 6 AM EST.
Man, where would I begin?
I'm sitting on an old Phenom 955 Black and a Radeon 6850 rofl
