Halo 5: Guardians Smashes Record with Biggest Halo Launch (games/hardware) in History

If they had sold anywhere between 5 and 6.7 million copies, they would've said it.

Indeed. Not that any Halo has ever done near that anyway, it's like 3m~ first week. So if 5 has managed around 2m that's a success given the userbase and the fact it's not at its peak.

Whoever does Microsoft's PR is a genius.
At first I was like "damn it did just fine actually", then I was like " Wait, how do they quantify "biggest?", and... Wha .. Hardware cumulated to software?".

I don't think it did badly (in the US particularly), it just probably didn't do nearly as good as other main entries.

Massive spin...

tried it at a buddy's place over the weekend and fucking loved the sampling of campaign i tried. graphics are amazing, and the sound effects mix/editing were top-notch, really felt chaotic at parts! if i had an xbox one i'd be all over it.

Oh dear. Talk like that will get the stern disapproval of Shin-Ra. Run!

Halo 5: Guardians has made history as the biggest Halo launch and fastest-selling Xbox One exclusive game to-date, with more than $400 million in global sales of Halo 5: Guardians games and hardware

and currently the highest rated Xbox One exclusive, first-person shooter game of 2015, according to Metacritic.

lol this spin is makin' me dizzy!

Why are people so suprised and so fixated on how many it sold.

Because how many it sold is all that really matters when it comes to where the Halo franchise is in the perception of the general public.

Spun $ are totally and completely meaningless.

I wonder what the $ (including Hardware) is for Knack.

Yeah, I know. Never claimed otherwise.

Doesn't take anything away though. $400 million USD is a huge amount of money in one week. I don't see how people can downplay that. Well, the usual suspects will always find a way, but seriously. It's a great launch. Any company in the world (except Rockstar?) would be thrilled to sell $400 million USD worth of games and hardware related to ONE game.

I wrote a week, not three weeks. Might've been 3 days then. But GTA 5 was also released to a much, much bigger install base (6-10 times bigger than Halo 5, probably).
Hmm? GT, Pokemon, COD, Uncharted, Mario Titles, Battlefield, etc...could all manage sales equal or greater. Its great sales revenue no doubt, but it is PR spin.

I wanna say Halo 3 did 3.1 million in NPD's (Sept. 07) when it launched, but I'm not confident in that number.

Because I'm interested in sales?

I love how since this game came out so many people are trying to change tradition

From the way reviews work, to what game length really means to the fact that we no longer have to give sales numbers

Stop being entitled, MS don't have to give you jack shit, so they're not BS at all. BS would be having to give a response and spinning it.

They're gonna do and say whatever puts them in the best light and they're not obligated to give you anything.

You're about right, Halo 3, Reach and 4 all did around 3.3m~ first NPD month.

Well well well... would you look at that.

Great game breaks records and has successful launch, all people can talk about is PR spins.

Yeah, it's much better to just suck it all up without any critical thinking.

For the #s people.

Do any Gaf detectives have any idea what the previous holder of this was? Is there a number attached to that game?

Maybe one could pull a guess from that little bit of a hint.

Non of MS first party games sold that well, so it's not really hard to beat.

I think Master Chief Collection or one of the Forza's. But neither of those two would have put up a huge number. They specifically put in the first party differentiator, so presumably it never outsold Titanfall.

I'd imagine the game still did really well in the US though.

I think it didn't reach the same attach rate as Titanfall when it launched, but it must had sold more copies.

I think it's impossible that Halo didn't outsell a new IP that launched when the console was only 5 months old.

While obviously Halo 5 sold really well during first week MS PR spins are getting ridiculous. Including hardware and comparing it to the previous sw only numbers? Really?

Amazing PR and spin. You gotta admit that MS are really masters in this discipline. Now I'm curious if they even hit the 3m mark in the first week.

Has the highest attached rate of any xbox exclusive, most halo fans already owned xbox confirmed!? So most of the revenue must have been sales.

Regardless of how many copies it sold, it's well deserved in any case. It's an excellent game.

This.

I didn't get my copy yet but i sill played the game and think it's incredible. It also looks very good and that 60fps makes it so sweet !

I think 343 did an amazing job with Halo and how Halo should evolve, i see a lot of complains about how it's another shooter and that it looks like Call of Duty with ADS and all that stuff but i don't agree with the complains. In my opinion, the game plays very well and is exactly how i wanted Halo to be in this day and age.

I hope they sell enough to make another Halo.

Yeah. Counting hardware in that figure puts a big asterisk on all of this. It took them a week to finagle the numbers into an impressive sound bite.

The game is a disappointment and I hope sales are down. The fundamentals of the game are solid and its fun but it has the worst halo campaign and the maps are already boring people.

What is Microsoft trying to hide? Why is there so much PR spin? I literally had to read the snippet 5 times. Even counting hardware sales? We already have the UK sales and we'll get the US sales in the NPD thread, which should give us a clear picture, seeing as other regions are negligible, so at least we're kinda set there.

This is very worrying. I was gonna predict that XBox One was gonna win NPD October, but now I'm switching to PS4. 343 did this.

they are going to make another halo whether they want to or not.

doesn't seem like they gave out the numbers for Halo 4 either.

It's just a point that anything that sells over 5 million copies get gloated about to the Nth degree, it doesn't matter what it is. It's an insane number to hit lifetime, let alone in a game's first week.

Of course they were gonna find a metric by which they could say this.

"Halo 5 sold 2.2m copies, this is the lowest Halo lauch since Halo: CE"

I swear some people honestly want and expect this sort of PR because they live in some entitled fantasy world.

But how many Sony exclusives combined did Halo 5 outsell.

Well, Shadow Fall sold 2.1 million in a little over a month, and InFamous Second Son sold over 1 million in 9 days. I fully expect Halo 5 to smash those numbers as it is a much more prominent franchise.

well deserved. I am having a blast with it. I just wish the campaign was longer. I expected to hate Spartan Locke due to the cliche mercenary badass attitude but I ended up liking him. Now let's wait wait for Halo 6. In the meantime can we have Halo reach remastered? Please...

etta falling hook, line, and sinker for MS PR.

Look at that, indeed :p
I love how people think they're not disclosing numbers to be misleading. People need to understand that shareholders don't give a shit about copies sold, rather how much revenue a single franchise can bring in with all related material.

Also:
Additionally, content from the broadcast generated 5.5 million total views throughout the week. This resulted in a spike in digital sales of Halo 5: Guardians, leading to it becoming the best-selling digital game ever in the Xbox Store for an opening week.
Hey people from the UK sales thread!

Numbers doesn't matter now.

Yea, some posters are living in an alternate universe right now.

We have a premier 1st-party title that seems to be under-performing relative to past mainline entries and we aren't supposed to interested in copies sold?
