Halo 5: Guardians Smashes Record with Biggest Halo Launch (games/hardware) in History

What?? Bigger than Halo 3? No fucking way. I wish I could relive seeing the lines at the game stores like Halo 3.

Honest question, when did this new narrative that units sold is irrelevant take over? I haven't been keeping up.

Sales aren't important when a game you like sells below expectations. If it bombs then it becomes a shame that it sold so low. Been like that since forever.

Except we aren't shareholders and nor do quite a few people in thread care for this PR because it combines hardware and software, which tells us nothing as to how game is performing at retail.

Wait, you feel entitled to that data?
Am I missing something here? Do they have to release that data? I feel like I'm out of the loop. Or do you just want the data for your own personal analysis?

All I care is that Microsoft receives enough return so that they'll blow an even bigger budget on next Halo's investment.
And given by the biggest Halo launch ever, I see I shouldn't be worried. I don't care about unit sales like you do. REQ micros will make up the difference and more.

Oh joy! Everyone will surely celebrate the prospect of more micro transactions making up any sales deficit.

can you not read ?

you know what's funny if the game had actually broken any sales records and Microsoft released them , the same people going "why do you want sales?" would be the same ones in here talking shit.

get real

What do you expect them to do and what would you do in their place? Why are you sick of it, why can't you just pass it up? It's not simple when it's such a trivial thing to get annoyed by.

Sure the PR is BS but it's in their best interest to present positive numbers. Numbers would be interesting and I'm curious too but PR isn't the source I expect to get these numbers from nowadays. We can be happy if we get them in quarterly reports.

That's a lot of money. Congrats MS & 343 on a successful launch!

These threads become tiring to read. They always devolve into a thinly veiled console war for both sides.

It's the latter for pretty much everyone who is interested in the data. I doubt anyone feels like they are entitled to it. And I don't think anybody actually expected actual data either.

That's the thing.. It's pretty transparent... We all know that they included controller and headset sales just to inflate sales to get it the "best selling halo title" but either way that's pretty impressive as Halo peaked almost 10 years ago in popularity.

Was anyone truly expecting this game to outsell halo 3 when the series was at it's peak or halo 4 when the xbox 360s install base was at it's peak?

Even if you cut through the PR it's still an extremely impressive number IMO.

Now it's about how you sell the brand. Look at Fallout 4 - already everything surrounding the Fallout 4 brand has brought in more money than the game will. It's all about product synergy and finding the right merchandise to sell that matches the brand.

I don't think it's genius at all. It's transparent BS, so it just makes them look disingenuous and conniving. MS Xbox PR is always like this and it's a contributor to the company's ongoing reputation as deluded, greedy slimeballs. Long term, I think it does more harm than their fake 'mission accomplished' hype does them good. They've been following this tack for years, though, so what do I know?

Just have a look at the titles in the gaming media. The large public will take just "the biggest Halo launch in history" and run with it. Look in this thread, the same thing happens for half of the posters. Genius, I tell you!

Think people need to calm down until NPD comes around and/or we get actual copies sold.

Either way, this is masterful PR. Whoever called the "revenue" announcement deserves a medal.

My only question, by break record, did they compare Halo 5 software and hardware with pass Halo software only or they compare all halo software and hardware?

yes
and i bet u want too, but you are just too afraid to know the truth

I love how people think they're not disclosing numbers to be misleading. People need to understand that shareholders don't give a shit about copies sold, rather how much revenue a single franchise can bring in with all related material.

Shareholders could not care less about that. Shareholders want real data. $400M in revenue means little to them when they cannot calculate how much profit was made from it.
These numbers are just as meaningless.

Well the PR says it has the highest attach rate
of first party titles lol

Hahaha, yes.

That's i why i still stand by the notion that Halo sold more copies than Titanfall, but the percentage of XB1 owners that bought it in this first week is smaller than it was with Titanfall on march 2014.

Let's say that Titanfall attach rate was 20% and Halo is 19%

?

Read the full sentence:

Halo 5: Guardians has made history as the biggest Halo launch and fastest-selling Xbox One exclusive game to-date

This has only made history with regards to the XB1, as the Xbox/X360 Halo game launches aren't included. Hence why people are calling this, and other things mentioned in the full quote, as PR spin.

Basically, this is means Halo 5 launch was being compared with MCC launch by MS in that PR release.

And they obviously won't stop making AAA Halo games, dude. It's their premier franchise.

Well deserved MS! Halo 5 is a great game, good to see its success.

That's a lot of money. Congrats MS & 343 on a successful launch!

These threads become tiring to read. They always devolve into a thinly veiled console war for both sides.

Exactly! I am having a great time with Slayer and Warzone. Great game, fun times.

What warrants trying to cast a negative shadow on this Halo 5 launch?

The downplaying is strong ITT. What's so important about the quantity of games sold? Isn't consumer investment of money into the franchise a more accurate metric of general interest in the game?

IMO who wins October NPD doesn't matter as much as how big the gap will be, but people will be all about placement like "Xbone is going to retake US" or "PS4 wins? Xbone is dead" because one outsold another by 4k.

I was talking about the prediction thread, but yeah, I agree that the actual NPD thread will probably be dominated by the gap discussion.

It is. Engagement and investment into the brand. Game sales are nice, but largely irrelevant as people can buy a lot of things besides the game for a lot of different price points, ala Fallout 4.

Oh joy! Everyone will surely celebrate the prospect of more micro transactions making up any sales deficit.

/s

This is the least intrusive microtransaction system to date. So yes, it was going to happen regardless, and because of that I'd rather it happen like this.

It's the latter for pretty much everyone who is interested in the data. I doubt anyone feels like they are entitled to it. And I don't think anybody actually expected actual data either.

I dunno, the general tone in here is that people are shocked/angry at MS not giving them the data they want for their own personal analysis.

Exactly! I am having a great time with Slayer and Warzone. Great game, fun times.

No ones casting a negative shadow. Just the sales numbers dropped and there's a reason for this. Why people think most in sales threads are looking to do more than understand the facts behind the numbers will always bewilder me.

Why so much salt? HALO 5 is a seemingly excellent title and a great exclusive, this PR has no implications on the quality of that game. Even if the franchise is on a decline, it likely isn't dramatically so, and could be relative to user base, which would mean the franchise has lost zero momentum. Why can't we all just laugh at the PR spin together? It doesn't mean Halo isn't great? Sheesh...people...lighten up

Is Titanfall even considered a first party title for MS?

Regardless of PR spin, if any property you owned generated +$400 Million global sales in a week, before going into the Black Friday in the USA and Christmas time globally, as a share holder, I would be happy. Especially if that was just one part of the business.

I don't care about the pr spin. I don't try to turn everything into something negative. The point is Halo is still very much alive and bringing in the money. As a Halo fan this is great news. Congratulations 343 it is well deserved. The game feels awesome. Cant wait to see new maps, req packs, and forge. Now get busy on Halo 6!

Always feels weird when they're touting dollars made and not copies sold...

Surely the success of a game in a publishers eyes and future decisions about that IP are based on $$ made and not copies sold. They don't care how many they shifted, they care about the profit margins.
