The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

I at least upgraded to component/hdmi by the next gen. I have s-video cables now for my gamecube, but I play most of my gc games on the wii.

Just realized I never played Beyond Good and Evil and impulse-bought the GC version on Ebay.

Hope it'll work fine on Dolphin...or else it'll put the component cable to some good use. :P

I used to play everything through RF, because I didn't know any better.

And to do one worse, I daisy chained 2-3 at a time to have multiple systems hooked up.

Then I'd look in to component, honestly. Interlacing is rough.
You're damn right, shame so many PS2 games are like that, it can get really, really nasty.

This is why I wish PS2 game and system hacking was more prominent than it is now. There are ways to force PS2 games to display true progressive mode, but the means for doing so are obscure and esoteric. People often suggest using XPloader and GSM and leaving it at that but they actually just stretch the frame to fit 480 - 720 lines and that's just... Absolutely disgusting!

My friend... RGB is not limited to resolution. RGB has been a PC standard in high resolution PC monitors for decades. RGB is standard in VGA, DVI, HDMI, and Display port from 240p all the way to 4K resolutions. In the case of the GC there is an arbitrary hard limit in the way the GC copies over information into video output memory. That is to say the GC doesn't put a native RGB signal under any resolution or connector type. The PS2 and DC on the other hand, put out RGB @ 480p just dandy.

Edit: And don't take me the wrong way, please. I'm not displeased about the mod in any way in terms of function. I'm just challenging the use of the term "RGB" in your description of it. RGB is not a resolution. RGB is not SCART or any other cable. RGB is not analog. RGB is a color space that can be analog or digital and carried by various connection types in limitless resolution caps.

Not taking you the wrong way. We good! I was referring strictly to the GameCube's 15khz RGBs output though since that's the topic at hand.

Ps2 RGBs output is 15khz as well no?

Dreamcast RGBs is 15khz. Only over RGBhv can it do 31khz/480p.

You are over complicating this IMO. I and many others think RGBs is a valid way of referring to the video output. Maybe you are referring to when I forget to put the "s" at the end of RGB. SCART on the other hand is just a connector style that can carry many different outputs. You wouldn't say " I use a dsub 15 connector on my dreamcast. You simply call it vga"

RGsB on PS2 is 480p iirc. Look, what I'm saying is that you can't really say you are getting RGB out of the GC in any form. To me it's fine to lump RGBs, RGsB, and RGBhv together. It's the same raw uncompressed color space, timing and frequency aside. So I don't think I'm over complicating anything. I draw the line at using RGB to describe connectors and resolution. RGB via any form of transmission is RGB. Anything else is obscuring the essence of what people are after when they say they want the cleanest picture out of their consoles by chasing down the RGB rabbit. What the GC is sending however is YUV2. It's a compressed signal derived from RGB.

If one is to claim that a mod is sending RGB from a GC it is because they are either mistaking RGB for a connector/resolution or the mod is doing some voodoo to pump out RGB. In the latter case, it's either converting to a non-native RGB signal, or really doing some high level hack to get the native color space out of the system memory.

Guys, I have a confession. I used to play my gamecube through RF....
Is that all? Psssh, that's nothing. Back in the day I played my GameCube on a third-party RF cable that heavily distorted loud sounds.

(...I have the component cables now. Those days are behind me.)

One of the greatest games of all time. Enjoy. I was one of maybe ten people who bought it opening week.

damn, Chibi was one of the ones i caught for like a dollar when gamestop was liquidating GC titles...was gonna hunt down the manual one day, but nevermind! think ill boot it up again tonight, meant to get further with that one

I had to trade for it recently, but it made realize that I'm probably done collecting on GC.

+1 - didn't really want cubivore that bad either, haha. for real though, looking at current prices im glad i kept the stuff i wanted

keep saying how the WU's library is gonna be just like this inside of 10 years too, i bet

Hopefully NX brings about a ton of ports and HD remakes to ensure prices stay low on WU stuff

Twilight Princess HD? IDK, if that will ever be cheap. Modern Nintendo doesn't do sales for one. So used game sales retain more value. Secondly, modern Nintendo will randomly end printing on certain games right in the middle of the console life cycle, which further adds to scarcity.

a) Modern Nintendo does do sales, just not very often
b) Modern Nintendo doesn't "randomly end printing" ...they stop printing games that don't sell, just like every other publisher on the planet. They also don't tend to overship their games.

Sigh... I'm sorry I forgot to sugar coat everything about modern Nintendo. Still, the results will be the same: Higher resale on used games.

Why is it that with Nintendo I always gotta walk on egg shells? I've said plenty about Sony and MS, but if I forget to be cheerie and don't even mean to come after Nintendo hard I get jumped?

Whatever, everything is great guys. I've come back to my senses. Nintendo is great. There is nothing wrong with Nintendo forever and there has never been anything wrong in the past. All that stuff I said before... Crazy talk... I forgot to take my meds. Praise be to Regie.

I don't have an issue with speaking poorly of nintendo and they deserve the negativity they've been getting the past generation. It's just that your comment came off as you have to walk on eggshells because of some nintendo fanboys. It seemed moreso that your statement was to discredit what the moon said because it differed from your comment.

I apologise for my tone if it set you off. I'm not a fan of any of the fanboyism on this forum either as it makes having a discussion/conversation more difficult or impossible. You're one of the more helpful posters and have some insights that benefit those coming into the thread. I just don't think that mudslinging regardless of the company is beneficial to the conversation and discussions of the thread.

I wanted Chibi Robo pretty bad, but prices have just skyrocketed. I'm kicking myself for not picking it up for $10 from a Gamestop bargain bin in 2008 or so...

Chibi Robo is magic and worth every penny.

Of course that's easy to say when I got it for five bucks ten years ago ;)

I must be one of the few here who bought it at launch/full retail. I always wished for more to explore in chibi robo, none of the sequels were able to provide me with that though :(

This was during my Warcraft years, when I was ignorant of so many releases. I am shamed.

If I'd known about it at the time I would have definitely supported it =[

I had never heard of it until a few months later. It definitely wasn't released in Australia, so I jumped on eBay. Ended up getting a US copy for basically nothing, as UK (PAL) copies were still full price.

I remember people being confused between it and Custom Robo.

I didn't know chibi robo got released in EU. I thought was one of those situations where EU got one game and NA got another, like doshin the giant.
Regardless of when as long as people are able to experience games like chibi robo is cool. More people to spread the word really.
Hopefully we'll see a sequel where it most closely resembles the gamecube release.

Btw does anyone remember the jesus fish plate on the giant robot in the game? What was that about?

I admit I can be as diplomatic in my choice of words as a barrel of angry piranhas. I get impatient and resort to short handing my position on things. Anyway, I didn't see too much important difference for the purpose of the end outcome concerning game collecting between what I said and what moon... elaborated. There are things I can strongly disagree on, but that's for a whole other discussion that really would flare up fanboyism to an intolerable degree from other passer by readers in the thread. So it's not a discussion I'm interested in unpacking. I appreciate your placating tone and your valuation of my presence in this thread. Thank you.

Sears sales bin $5.99 here.

Get Dave from Game Sack to sell it. He owns it and doesn't even appreciate it.

It's a goddamn treasure. Anybody in possession of this game that doesn't like it and keeps it out of the hands of someone who would is committing a crime against humanity. :P

I think Chibi Robo has maybe the best story of any game ever made in history. It's sci fi and personal and silly and comedy and amazing.

Only other one I hold in as high regard is Silent Hill 1.

Wow! That's some high regard. Haha

Personally, I played better stories, but this game charmed the pants off me for sure. Love the father's silly hype reactions to his favorite cartoon.

Hey Silent Hill 1's plot is very sophisticated and clever. And the sequels were much more simplistic in plot structure and made no sense in the world of that game
without Alessa
, it was very obvious to me the original director was gone after 1.

Chibi isn't quite on that level but is also pretty clever. I mean it deals with
family breakdown, time travel, aliens, regret and redemption, and even lightly touches on a potential world energy crisis
all in a game about a household appliance. And has such an amazing neo-future-retro style.

I adore this console. It's aged bloody magnificently. Especially with nice RGB cables on a CRT. I was using the components on my HDTV but I'm not sure I'd go back after RGB. Although I've yet to try RGB + Framemeister.

I've had a pretty good few weeks with my collection, picking up some of the more expensive titles - Cubivore, Baten Kaitos Origins, Megaman X Collection & Gotcha Force. What other expensive titles that are actually good are there?

Chibi-Robo is fantastic.

damn, i bought Baten Kaitos on the cheap when i meant to grab Origins

also MMX collection is pricey now? weren't the controls kinda borked there? and Smash Melee, like everyone with a GC had a copy of that

Yep. Though it controls fine, MMAC is the one where B is jump and A is shoot.

I used to own MMAC and somehow managed to put up with it...I doubt I will do now though, lol.

EDIT: Had to fix some corrections.

MMX is fine on GCN. The original MMAC is the one that has the messed up controls.

aw damn, think i have OG MMC on GC & MMX one on PS2...sucks, but i got both for like a dollar when GS was liquidating them so i can't really complain

I just picked up a never-opened GameCube on eBay along with a lightly used Game Boy Player. Fortunately, not only had I saved all my GCN games and accessories back when I sold off my original one in 2006 (since the Wii was backwards compatible), I also saved my component cable!

I got the system set up last night and had a great time reacquainting myself with Super Mario Sunshine and Eternal Darkness. What a great console. It's not HD and has zero built-in online features, but man were there ever some fantastic games.

This man is smart!

There's just something about the little lunch box that could. It just doesnt feel the same playing gamecube games without firing up the actual cube itself.

I have MMX on PS2 as well. No shame in that. Unless you were tryna flip for a profit, lol. GCN ver is worth way more in the second-hand market!
