how do they land?

Applying Newton's laws, if they were to fly/fall perpendicular to the ground and applied the engine, the force exerted against gravity should cause the person flying to stop accelerating as they fell. When closer to the ground, they could probably decelerate as well so they don't hit the ground at a high velocity.

Basically, parachutes.
