Fallout 4 is available for pre-load on Steam

I asked in the huge Fallout thread but didn't get a response, how big are we thinking is the day one patch?

I'll be using a VPN it play it Monday morning but the limit is 500 mb, will that be enough y'all reckon?

There probably won't be a day one patch given the pre-load went live just yesterday. Patches on consoles need to go through certification, which takes several days, whereas there's no such barrier on Steam.

Your store region is tied to the region within which you last completed a purchase, but you can change it to that of your current IP by going to either the cart page or your account page. The country code "trick" still works (http://store.steampowered.com/?cc=xx, where xx is your desired country code), though, but only if you're not logged in. The game unlocks in AU/NZ in a little under 32 hours.
Damn Monday morning. Really wish we had some legit pc/xbone screenshots

Haven't played a big new release on PC in years, so pre-loading with Steam's speed was a lovely change of pace from PSN. 23 GB in like 13 minutes.

So unlocking with a VPN, do we only need to stay connected when unpacking and running the game the first time? What happens if it disconnects when unpacking? I've done it before, but I've always been kind of unclear on those two things.

I believe you can go offline after unpacking then disconnect

The content is on your computer, so loss of connection doesn't matter. You'd just have to relog in the VPN as the region unlock will reset to your native country.

Are people unlocking the game now with VPN?

No. It unlocks first in AU/NZ.

Before Steam Refunds, I wouldn't even consider touching a pre-load. But the times have changed, and now my finger hovers over the button... but I must be strong!

$80 CDN doe. That's still too much for a video game that I may or may not like.

you're going to wait an hour for unpacking

you can grab some Nuka-Cola Quantum at Target while waiting

The time it takes for a game to decrypt is very much a YMMV thing. Black Ops 3, which unlocked when I finished work the night of release, is close to 60GB and was ready to play by the time I got home (~25 minutes later).

How do I know where I've pre-loaded the game? I am now not sure if I actually pre-loaded it to SSD or HDD. Any way to check? Checked Steam folder on both drives - none of them have Fallout 4 folder in steamapps.

It'll be in SteamApps\depotcache. You'll see cache files named after the depots listed here.

They've always been the same. Bethesda just pushed back the unlock time to match the lifting of the review embargo.

Ah okay, I stand corrected then.
I always thought that NZ got the unlock earlier as everyone is posting about NZ VPN all the time.

Technically NZ is a couple of hours ahead of the eastern states, but this tends to be ignored when it comes to unlock times. I can't think of a single example to the contrary, actually. But, yeah, the AU and NZ stores both had the same unlock time when I checked the other day and they both say nine hours now (8.5 in actuality).

So this won't be unlocking at midnight EST?

Because lol. It's worse than the Portal 2 potato shenanigans.
That was such a rough weekend for me

I didn't want to leave my house and do anything because PORTAL 2 COULD HAVE BEEN RELEASED AT ANY MINUTE

I recall it releasing at like 12:30 AM EST the day it was supposed to come out.

Yep, all that for it to get released something like 2 hours ahead. I did pretty much the same thing, even though it turned out to be a faked progress bar.

We did get clarification though that it was because EA raised hell about it was why that happened. After the countdown before the "Glados reboot" thing, it should have just been released.

Used vpn, changed store page to Australia. Now says unlocking in a little over 6 hours. So excited.

How do you change the store page to a different region? My VPN says I'm connected, but when I open Steam, it still shows 20 hours left.

I was having the same problem as you until I realised I had to use the links JaseC supplied within the Steam client - visiting them in your desktop browser and changing your store region to AU there isn't enough for some reason.

That is great, came to ask this very question.

Thank you and JaseC for that! I got it working, finally.

I thought the store would change automatically based on the IP, so that would have been crappy when I woke up later to play.

Will achievements unlock offline? Or Will they appear once the game unlocks at midnight?

I've spent lots of time playing steam games offline. Lots of games do support offline achievement unlocks while you play, but they won't be stored to your account until you go online.
