Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

Hrm. Game worked for me this morning after installing the nvidia game ready drivers.

Just got home, the game installed an update, and now it just goes to a black screen and hangs.

I'm thinking about picking up a physical PC copy. My understanding is that it installs about 5GB and activates and downloads the rest via Steam. Once that's done, do I still need my disc, or can I chuck it?

You can chuck it. Once the cd key is tied to your Steam account, game is yours forever.

I need some visual confirmation of this shit man. If that's the case I may as well just save a few dollars, get a GMG key, and download the 24 gigs overnight. I ask because Bethesda doesn't usually do this.

Now my Fallout 4 has a chance of becoming unresponsive on loading screens.

Lovely, having 3-4 crashes in a row trying to get to one or two places.

Well, it will work in windowed mode but not full screen.

Bethesda have made an official comment regarding the 144hz display fuckup:
What do I do if I am getting stuck in furniture or terminals while playing Fallout 4 on PC?

Many issues related to the game's physics can be traced to manual tweaking of the game's .INI file in order to try and uncap or raise the game's max framerate. These types of issues can also occur if the game/launcher incorrectly detects monitors that are set to refresh rates above 120Hz as being set to 120Hz.

In general, you are advised to keep the game's default settings and continue to play the game with a 60fps cap. The fps cap that the game uses is determined by the your monitor refresh rate (typically 60Hz or 120Hz), and dividing it by the "iPresentInterval" value.

Please note that if your monitor is set to 60Hz, the iPresentInterval value in your .INI file should be "1", and if your monitor is set to 120Hz, the iPresentInterval value should be "2". Setting it to "0" uncaps the framerate and can cause the issues mentioned above. If your monitor is set to a value larger than 120Hz (such as 144Hz), they are advised to set their desktop refresh rate to 120Hz instead, when playing the game.

So, if you have a 144Hz display (or higher), you are advised force 120hz mode ... :(

I cannot get this to run well. I don't know WTF is going on, because it SHOULD be running decently. I even jumped it down the the medium presets and it's just... stuttering all over the place.

I have the latest nVidia drivers, 16 gigs of RAM, a 970, and an i7 4790k. It just keeps stuttering CONSTANTLY. HELP PLEASE. :(

I'm going to roll back to some older drivers and see if that helps.

Try borderless windowed mode.

Now that I'm getting into the city I'm seeing a lot more drops. Are these performance related, or is the game just janky like it is at Lexington?

It seems to have issues introducing new content into cells in particular and so areas with more entities have higher number of drops.

As for my issue. I think I am done trying. Just going to run it on the midspecced PC from now on. Such an odd problem and never experienced in a game prior.

So I shouldn't bother trying to tweak my settings to get it to not drop?

Sorry if this has been asked, i haven't gone through the thread yet. Has anyone run it on a 960m or something equivalent? Any idea how it would look at 1080p?

There are numerous places that have heavy FPS drops. It doesn't even have to be in the city. It clearly needs to be patched. I have a GTX 970, 16 GB RAM, Core i7 and a SSD and get drops into the high 20's at the worst moments.

Is anyone playing with uGrids increased? How's it working? Are saves still tied to the setting you choose?

I got tired of waiting for others to check this, so I ran around a bit in the starting section of the world map with uGridsToLoad=9 (instead of the default 5). From my 60 fps capped baseline, there were some deviations down to low 50s fps in some parts of the map, but it was mostly 60 fps. With deviations I mean that the "steady fps" dropped, so depending on how much geometry you are loading your avg fps may be about 50. So, uGridsToLoad=9 probably only a good idea for gsync/freesync users atm, unless you want to sync at 30, 36 or 40 fps. I think I will go with it, actually, to make use of hardware despite silly 60 fps cap.

settings: 1440p, everything max except sun shafts at high, iPresentInterval=0, fullscreen mode, fps capped at 60 with riva tuner statistics server, uGridsToLoad=9
specs: 3570k@4.6, 16 gb ram, titan x, installed on ssd, windows 7, gsync display

Seems to be the worst in the city areas. I'm sure it will get patched soon. For now I'm just going to deal with it.

I think that maybe this is just janky as fuck. I set everything to low, and it STILL couldn't maintain a solid framerate without stuttering. This is with a 970, an i7 4790k, and 16 gigs of RAM. WTF.

I just discovered some kind of bug.

It's been bugging the heck out of me that my FPS will not go above 48fps no matter what setting I put it on. I have a 1440p Korean monitor OC'ed to 96 hz. 48 is half of 96. So strange it is halving my FPS.

i7-3770k @ 4.2 ghz
R9 290
16gb ram
SSD

Running at 1080p
Ultra preset with Godrays and Shadow Distance to Low and Medium
Distance sliders set at 50-75%

Have it basically locked at 60fps.

Specs:
6700K @ 4.7ghz
980Ti SC w/358.91 drivers
16gb ram
SSD
1440p(Acer G Sync monitor)
Everything on Ultra and a few grass distance tweaks, custom Reshade/SweetFX preset.

I increased my uGrids to 7 and the Cell Buffer to 64 when I got out of the vault, and have had no CTD's during 6 hours of gameplay so far. I have seen rare framerate dips into the high 50's, but most of the time my fps has been around 80'ish outdoors and 120 capped indoors. The SweetFX preset knocks up to 8fps off as well.

I'm not 100% sure but I'd say as with past Bethesda games, you probably can't revert back to a lower uGrid setting on a save file. Although there may be a way around that?
I will probably try to go for uGrids 9 now I have enabled Sli with the AFR2 tweak.

Well I'll give it a try and see how it goes...

Can't really skim through this whole thread but can anyone sum up for me how the performance is for this game (I have a 970). I'm gonna pick it up from Target and I wasn't sure whether to go PC or Xbox.

Also does it come with a code in the box or do you have to install it (I lack a CD Drive)?

970 is technically going to work great. BUt there are all kinds of issues between having the right card and getting it to run well.

So does that mean setting the interval thing to 2 set the frame rate cap to 120?

It appears that setting it to 2 locks your fps at half your monitors refresh rate, so on a 60hz monitor with 2 as the value for that setting will lock your fps at 30.

It's probably set to 2 already, hence why your fps is halved. If you set it to 1 it should lock your fps at 96, but may cause physics problems.

Totally makes sense now. Awesome, I just went ahead and set it to 0 and capped with Riva Tuner

Zero crashes and terminal bugs so far. Am I just very lucky?
No stuttering as well. Perhaps it's due to that .ini vsync and fullscreen tweak from last night.

I think I give up. I have tried running the game in low even, and it can't stop stuttering. I don't know what to do. It's infuriating.

I have an i7 4790k, a 970, and 16 gigs of ram. It shouldn't be running like this. :(

Has anyone tried forcing SLI AND running in borderless windowed mode? If so how is it running, SLI in borderless is hit and miss depending on the game.

Holy crap, I think the new display drivers maybe did something to my system. When I was trying to install them the first time, the screen went completely black and I did a hard reset because nothing was happening. I've since done a clean install of the new drivers.

I just now tried to play Witcher 3 which was working before, now that's stuttering also. GAF help. What do. D:

ive got a i7 4790, and a 980 ti and so far ive been maintaining 1080p at 60fps. havent noticed any fps drops or anything but i have had a bunch of cases where characters mouths have stopped moving while talking or the subtitles refuse to chage, but i think thats part of that old bethesda charm lol

You have to describe what kind of stuttering you having. Hard frame rate drops? Jittery 59-60?

So the game's recommended settings are on ultra for everything.

I've got a 4gb R9 290, i7-6700K and 16gb of ram. That can't be right, right? Should I be playing on a mix of high/medium?
