Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

Oh man...... c'mon, this is still a thing in their games? Really? I remember how with Fallout 3 I was maxing the game out yet it stuttered, I spent way too much time in the game's first area trying to solve the issue, right down to changing the very same setting, the iFPSClamp. It seriously took out every bit of soul I had in me and never actually got to play it properly. It's been some 8 years and still the same issue is in Fallout 4....... I'm a bit on the fence about the game, and things like this aren't helping at all. I don't have much money so every buy must be very well thought out :/

IMO don't buy it. Same fucking mistakes are repeated here. I won't even bother describing how worse the controls are in 4 compared to 3 and NV.

DS4 really pissing me off. Every time i start the buttons get all mixed up and some dont work.

Happening with either ds4 windows on or off.

Any fixes?

Think ill try and get an x1 or steam controller tomorrow

I had too many issues with DS4 on Windows always some little hitch so I gave up on it. I want to get an Xbox One pad but I'm not going wired and I dunno if that dongle will work on Win 8.1 (not in the mood to fuss with 10 currently).

As for my performance. i5 3570k @ 4.5ghz, 770 GTX, 8GB RAM. Ultra/High mix, turned up a few in-game sliders too. Currently always at 60 FPS with an occasional hiccup, no bugs. We'll see how it holds up but it seems fine so far.

Game ain't gonna win any awards for the tech in it's visuals but the aesthetic and atmosphere works out well and it's a sleeker package than I actually expected from Bethesda. Overall it looks good, IMO.

Just came here to say that the steam-listed 8 GB RAM minimum requirement for Fallout 4 is bullshit.
I have 6GB RAM in an old Core i7 @3.4GHz and a GTX 970. Game runs perfect(!), everything ULTRA @1080p, no hicups or framedrops due to RAM paging to HDD or anything, zero problems so far, ~2 hours in the game.

RAM req in games lately is usually safe than sorry. Hard to put a real req when there's an amazing difference in what people run in the background but yeah you could prob get away just fine with 6GB with this. I have a friend on 6GB as well and playing it... Still, I currently have 8 and would like to move to 16, soon.

I've made a comparison between 3 different first person FOVs, hope it helps some folk decide. I've settled for 90.

Thanks, you helped me set my mind on 90 as well.

Works fine for me on my 144hz G-Sync monitor, but I didn't mess with anything in the ini files, so I imagine V-Sync is still on.

Also, on the system RAM discussion, memory is so cheap that I don't know why anyone would like that be their potential bottleneck. 4GB was standard for mid-range PCs like 7 or 8 years ago. I'd say 8 should be the minimum people should target these days.

I'm running 144hz and can also confirm I got stuck at a terminal.

Why the hell wouldn't you put your games on the SSD? I mean... why??

I had read that installing games to your SSD will shorten its life more than any other content/media since it's constantly reading/writing. Was that only for the early drives or was it always a load of bunk?

At any rate I've been totally fine with the platter drive's gaming performance thus far, but I know I'll be draining a big chunk of time into this game so if loading times were at all a concern it may be worth making another games folder on my C drive.

What's you CPU? Mine's a 4770K. Disabling vsync predictably results in horrible judder and tearing, with the framerate going above 60. Enabling it results in stuttering as it bounces around below 60fps.

2500k 3,3 GHz.

I accidentally opened the console but found no way to exit. Which key is it?

edit: also, anyone else having massive problems with textures not loading properly? it's gotten to a point where it's almost 50/50 whether i'll have proper res textures or not, inside interiors.

Solved mine by Frame limiting to 61fps. Use either Riva Tuner for Nvidia cards, or use the CCC option for AMD.

That was said for mostly first gen drives, but even then, it was sort of exaggerated. Games don't read/write -that- much, only when loading new areas/textures, and it's not that often or that detrimental to the health of the SSD.

Just to confirm how demanding Ultra Godrays really are (max settings @1080p):

Specs:

OS: Windows 10 64-bit
nVidia Driver: 358.91
Motherboard: ASRock Z87 Extreme4
Power Supply: EVGA SuperNOVA 750W G2
CPU: i7-4770k @4.2GHz (HT Enabled)
Heatsink: Hyper 212 Evo w/2x Noctua NF-F12 Fans
GPU: GIGABYTE GTX 980 Ti G1 Gaming 6GB
RAM: 16GB G.SKILL Sniper @1866MHz
SSD (OS): 256GB Samsung 850 Pro
HDD (Games): 1TB Western Digital Caviar Black 7200 RPM

As can be seen, it's using 98% of my GPU with max settings @1080p. Now, with everything maxed, but Godrays to High, I can get 60 fps 95% of the time @1440p.

This game has a massive GPU usage range; I'll average 45% GPU usage the majority of the time, and then *boom,* it's up to 99% usage out of nowhere in certain situations.

2500k 4GHz
16GB RAM
GTX 980 Ti
Win10 x64
2560x1440 144hz/G-sync

All on Ultra except godrays on Medium. Removed Vsync in the .ini and capped my FPS to 72 (half 144hz) in RivaTuner. I've only played a couple of hours so far but it's butter smooth, don't think I've seen it drop a frame (yet).

I've made a comparison between 3 different first person FOVs, hope it helps some folk decide. I've settled for 90.

Yeah 90 FOV is the best I think, it starts to warp a bit when going higher.

my friend who is running 144hz got stuck at terminals at least 15 times.

I wanna adjust my FOV to 90 as well.

Tell your friend to set a frame limit. If he's running an AMD card, in Catalyst control center, under the "performance" tab, there is a frame rate option, enable it, and set it to 61fps max.
If he's running an Nvidia card, I believe you can set the limit with Riva Tuner (not sure if there is an option in the Nvidia drivers for this).

Just chiming in as a G-Sync 144hz user - I didn't have any issues with terminals at all, and that's with iPresentInterval at both 1 and 0. Terminals still work fine for me if I go above 60 fps - as does everything else as far as I can tell - so the issue may lie elsewhere.

Okay, no matter what combination of "fixes" (.ini tweaks, adaptive vsync, borderless window) I'm running, I always drop to 40 FPS when I look right here. These images are from a location about 3 hours into the game, so they're not much of a spoiler, but I've spoiler tagged them just in case. I'm running an i5 4670k 3.4 ghz, and a 970. 8 gigs of ram.

The drops seem to come from looking in that direction, even if I move past that point up those stairs to look out over Lexington. Somethin's messed up with the game, it has nothing to do with our rigs. Hopefully a patch can bring some stability here.

That entire area sucks for the FPS. I drop to 40 there too on my 980ti.

only getting about 40fps with everything on ultra except godrays set to low at 1080p

this is on a 2500k at 4.4ghz and a 970 with 8gb of ram. Is that about right?

Something is wrong, i rarely see it go below 40. I have just about everything on ultra ( shadow distance is on high ) God rays medium, and everything else maxed out. at 1080p.

On an FX8350 @ 3.9ghz 8gb ram and an r9 280x.

What really really helped the performance, was adding iFPSClamp=60 in fallout4.ini. And changing iPresentInterval=1 to a 0. This way it turns off vsync and still caps your fps at your refresh rate.

Cool, pardon my ignorance. Thank you.

Wtf, started getting weird mouse problems suddenly. It's like the cursor keeps getting stuck for tenth of a second all the time, fucking infuriating. Anyone come across this and managed to fix it?

I'm honestly curious if there's anything I need other than a new video card (currently have a 1GB 7850) or is my 3570k holding me back as well.
lbXnG.jpg

So I can actually run the game at a pretty decent and stable framerate on medium settings with the only issues i've found so far is obviously textures not loading very quickly and the the framerate dropping in areas where you can climb to a high altitude.

Issue seems to arise if you get around 100fps, not just any number above 60fps. But yeah, could be something else, but anecdotally my problem got solved as soon as I set the framelimit, and it seems to be the general fix most people that encounter the issue do.

Or the issue is less common with G-sync on?

I have my monitor capped at 100hz and I haven't had any issues with terminals at all in the 3-4 hours I've put in so far.

I drop here and I have a 5960X and a Titan X.

Yup, just giving people a good reference point for a reliable drop, at least one that I've found. I've been using it to test fixes, none of which have seemed to have any effect on that area.

Before looking at your screenshot I knew exactly where it was. Yep, I get massive drops there too. 5820k / Fury X btw.

I had gsync on, as both the posters who replied to my first post regarding the issue.

I was able to do several before it locked me in place, so it might just be random for 144hz users also.

Using default settings but framerate is locked at 40 (dropped to 20 at power plant). Which options should I turn down to get to 60? I assume TAA is expensive.

I have my monitor capped at 100hz and I haven't had any issues with terminals at all in the 3-4 hours I've put in so far.

But do you actually hit 100fps, it's not about the actually refresh rate of the monitor. Just that if the monitor is 60hz, the in-game v-sync will lock it at 60fps, and you cannot go higher (thus not hitting 100fps or more), whilst having 144hz (or 100hz in your case) screen the in-game v-sync lets you hit those numbers, and potentially break the game. At least, that's been my understanding.
If you don't get the error, good on you. If you do, try locking the frame rate.

Things are definitely sped up at 72 fps, which is what it runs at for me by default, I guess it's cutting 144hz in half? If I turn on VSYNC and it goes to 144fps it's like superspeed. How are people playing like that?

Right from the start I encountered constant microstuttering (most noticable when strafing left or right) and input lag despite running at a solid 60fps. Tinkering with the .ini file and forcing v-sync within nvidia's control panel didn't help, but once I switched from fullscreen to borderless windowed (at native 2560x1600) via the Fallout 4 launcher it was buttery smooth. For years I've read about people doing this, but it's the first time *I've* ever needed to. Weird stuff. Just echoing this particular solution for others to keep in mind...

Has this been posted already?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r4EHjFkVw-s

It shows how the game (animations, physics) is tied to the framerate.
Come on Bethesda, usually this shit only happens in the bad ports of Japanese games. :(

Jesus christ, eff this I'll try again around Christmas time. Reading all these reports surrounding the game combined with what little time I have to play these days has really soured my hype. This has just been the last drop. I know I'll enjoy it, one day.

But do you actually hit 100fps, it's not about the actually refresh rate of the monitor. If you don't get the error, good on you. If you do, try locking the frame rate.

According to my OSD I am getting 90-100fps for the most part besides places like lexington and sometimes looking at random objects. Dialogue is clearly messed up though. The lip syncing is off as its running at a different speed but I think it is a fair trade off for now.

Found a Fallout 4 video with the same specs.

Description
Settings are high as you can see FPS is between 35 - 45ish mostly, on HIGH settings. No noticable lag or framedrops, smooth gameplay overall.
On MEDIUM the FPS is capped at 60, see my other video.

Things are definitely sped up at 72 fps, which is what it runs at for me by default, I guess it's cutting 144hz in half?

Things speeds up if you use the iFPSClamp thing set to 60, any FPS above 60 will make the game faster, and under 60 will slow it.

So do not use this thing unless you can keep 60 fps all the time, remove it.

I have a 144Hz GSync screen and I have to force it to 60Hz and set iPresentInterval to 0 to avoid the stuttering.

If you do not use the iFPSClamp and let the game run at 144Hz, the engine will scale its speed acording to your FPS, but in some areas FPS drops (like 90 fps to 60), and it causes stutter as the engine is changing its pace to prevent running slowly or quickly.

The only way I found to avoid that is forcing the screen to run at 60Hz.
I tried forcing the game to lock at 60 FPS but I still got little stutter.

I've been gaming on my Raid 0 Crucial M4s since 2011 with absolutely zero problems. They've been more reliable than any platter drive I've owned.

What did you use to lock at 60hz?

Edit: I guess just set it to 60hz in display properties?

Possible to make the camera via gamepad smoother and/or disable aim assist? The camera is slightly jittery when looking around. Not smooth. This is w/ v-sync disabled, framerate capped at 60 via RTSS, and g-sync'd.

I actually like the default FOV in this game.

Using default settings but framerate is locked at 40 (dropped to 20 at power plant). Which options should I turn down to get to 60? I assume TAA is expensive.

I would say turning off AA, SSAO, motion blur, and God Rays to Low.

I have G-Sync on.

If the issue doesn't crop up until you break 100fps, that would explain it. I'm not hitting that at all even indoors (1440p on a single 970, not surprising), so perhaps that's why I haven't encountered problems.

I will say that I haven't noticed any speed increases in game logic and animations when going above 60, though. Perhaps those only crop up if you go beyond 100? Maybe I just missed it and those ghouls aren't supposed to be quite that quick. :P

I have one of those 1440p Korean monitors that can get 100hz and I had to cap my fps to 60 because I frequently got stuck after using terminals. Hopefully they fix that soon, but since it seems it's tied to a high refresh rate, they probably won't since the game is meant to run no higher than 60.
