Major mid-game spoilers for the Institutionalized quest:
wow. Well, that was a nice little twist I didn't see coming. I'm not sure where to go from here. I think the Institute is wrong about many things but I do want my character to have a relationship with his son. Unsure if I should continue with the Brotherhood or listen to my son more. Who did you guys choose here?

Got a loan of a ps4 copy from my brother since he is off on a holiday for the weekend.

A install screen? What year is this?

I forgot console games did this. Why is it taking so long? Its been going for about 10 minutes and is only 35%

When is the best time to start settlement building? Also when I do start should i stick to one settlement? If so where is the best place to build?

I've only just left the vault and done some stuff after meeting Codsworth again.

So I've played Fallout 3, it's DLC, and Fallout New Vegas and it's DLC and am now 15 hours into Fallout 4 and I just now realized that you can get rid of Dud answers when hacking terminals. Apparently you could do that in all the games.

I feel like my entire life has been a lie up to this point.

lol... ha... yeah... *ahem* can you?

For me, Sanctuary seems to be the best place to get a settlement, but you need to get some people first before starting one. Complete a couple of missions
and you will get a group of people to move to Sanctuary and that's the best moment to start i think.

So far I'm loving this game! There's just so much to explore and do, it's crazy. 10 hours in and I haven't even gone to Diamond City yet.

Also, while wandering though Lexington, I found
an elevator behind a bookcase in the basement of a diner
. I was wondering if anyone figured out how to get it to work, cause I couldn't figure it out.

Quest trigger I think

Theres a doctor in diamond city that can do it, no idea what you can do if you're out in the world

I feel like I'm not exploring as much as I did in games like Skyrim. I'm going after quests, and those quests keep drawing me to the same areas. I want to go off the beaten path, but I'm having a hard time actually doing it for some reason.

Find a doctor, they'll cure it.

Ok TY guys my health bar is really tiny now .

Awesome cheers.

This game is really fun to play on Survival Difficulty, provided you don't think of it as a shooting game but rather some kind of bullet based geometry puzzle. The vast majority of firefights devolve into messing with enemy AI, pathing, and shooting between geometry fixtures since enemies kill you insanely quickly. It forces you to emphasize long range engagements, harassment, or the ever-popular corner peekabo with a shotgun.

I remember beating an outpost with a Fat Man Power Armor raider by baiting everyone into the woods where I could engage them one on one. There was also a Legendary Mireluk I killed by constantly kiting it up and down a cliff it could not path around. It's not really anything like shooting games but the combat is a whole lot more interesting than anything else Bethesda's done.

Though now I have enough super-weapons to disintegrate most enemies pretty quickly. At least they still shred you, so it's somewhat balanced.

Does this game have difficulty trophies?

Man, that Power Armor it's really useful early in the game. I'd trouble with one mission that requires killing some raider and i got killed like 5 times before giving up, getting some cores and then blazing the mission with the Power Armor.

Also, i suck at conversations :v

I'm so dissapointed that the junkyard dog doesn't do anything but wander around wherever you send it. Can't even relocate it :-/

oh well, guess dogmeat has a friend back at the station

I found a minigun on a legendary bloat fly. It has explosive rounds.

It adds 15 damage in an aoe explosion on hit. The minigun fires like 35 rounds a second.

Here is another gif of me killing an overleveled behemoth in less than 5 seconds. It also shows off a knee pad that turns me invisible as long as I'm crouching and not moving.

I love Codsworth's "And that's that, then."

he hangs out in a dog house there. make sure there's only 1 and move it to wherever you want.
He goes to any of the dog houses in that area, all are behind houses (I think there is 3 locations). What i did was to scrap everything in that area and set a dog house near the main workbench. That is where he goes for me now since its the only dog house for him.
Yep, tried this. Still nothing!

I think he's just glitched out and gone missing.

:O wow nice!

Anyone else lose
Nick Valentine
? I sent him back to Sanctuary a while ago and he never showed up. I've waited days and days of in game time with no luck.

I know it's Fallout but the damn skeletons creep me out in certain locations. I do like the artistic placement of some. One hilarious setup involved two men in a struggle over a vault as a kitten painting hanged above their head, another saw a husband/wife duo almost robbing a bank but failing with the husband dead by the car and the wife hanging over the bank's wall. Creative stuff Bethesda.

I haven't even continued the main quest yet...THERE'S SO MUCH CONTENT, GOOD GOD.

I think I might finally head to Diamond City Friday night, anyone know if you should be at a certain lvl though? I'm only headed towards LVL 13.

He was gone for me too, never saw him in the doghouse. If you continue the main quest he actually pops up for a mandatory part, after that I send him to red rocket instead and have been fine. I'm not sending companions to Sanctuary anymore, area is too big/easy to lose stuff in.

It's too bad OT's don't reserve space for frequently answered questions that arise during the OT, I just started playing today and I feel like I've missed hundreds of posts here with good advice. Guess I'll just check for one of Kotakus tip things.

i do everything at red rocket. all the companions, all the building and modding stuff, power armors, the lot. it's so small you can find everything easy.

i just built a huge shack where the gas pumps are and filled it with beds lol.

Yeah, made the mistake of sending him back to Sanctuary at that point. Oh well, I'll just walk in circles until I find him.

I finished the game and I actually ended up feeling better about than I did at the start. It's not as good of a game as New Vegas, but it's better than Fallout 3. It's a decent open world action game with some RPG elements, which isn't anything particular unique in today's market, but I enjoyed playing it.

Ahhh man....ever since someone posted in here that Paladin Danse sounded like George Clooney, I have not been able to unhear it. He is a dead ringer for him

Just did my first successful flirt. Reltionship systems in these games are so terrible yet so addicting lol. Piper's p cool.

Are checks just tied to charisma? I might just max that next...

The first sniper rifles that might be available to you won't even necessarily be sniper rifles. If you have a rank of Gun Nut you can mod a pipe pistol with a full stock and a ranged scope to be a pretty good semi-auto sniper rifle. The sniper rifle I use is a hunting rifle, which you'll start to see after a few hours.

Nothing goes to waste. :)

Pipe Rifle -> Sniper Rifle -> Combat Sniper Rifle

I've started finding a decent amount of Hunting Rifles on dead bodies after I hit level 12 or so and was exploring the areas along the western wall of the map, south of Sanctuary. I've named my current Sniper rifle "Say Goodbye to your Face."

...I just realized that Sniper Rifle in this game is basically a scoped non-automatic Rifle..... For some reason I always thought non-automatic Rifle and Sniper Rifle are two different weapon classes....... d'oh.

I don't really like how some of the legendary weapon adds are so ridiculous while others are no better than default weapons. It does make it really exciting whenever a Legendary enemy pops up though, so I like the change.

There are some insane synergies, like any +15 flat damage to miniguns or other rapid firing weapons. The "extra hit" weapons are particularly stupidly devastating for one, especially since [Weapon/Quest Spoilers]
You can just buy one at Vault 81 which makes it easily the best early game weapon ever.
"Instigating" guns are also really nice sniper-rifles since it lets you oneshot alot more enemies.

ok so far i have fun with the game but im honest, im a little bit dissapointed, but thats propably my own fault.
I havent played any FO before and just before the release Ive seen a 24h fallout 3 stream and i liked the VATS system, i liked beeing this lone ranger, i liked the repair feature where you could make your weapon better by repairing it with another one of its kind. All these things sold me on fallout 4 and i havent read any previews. And now the 'VATS has changed, the game shoves settlement building in my face and the repair feature is gone entirely, instead i have to fickle arround with this horrible workbench..

but still, i like the game!

Man, Bethesda's writing is so terrible. I just finished a small side quest that had me scratching my head the whole time and after. I'm not going to spoiler tag such a small side quest so if you don't want to know anything just stop reading.

Any way, the side quest I'm talking about is with the little ghoul boy Billy. First, you start the quest by hearing a child's voice coming from a refrigerator so you naturally investigate and he asks you to let him out and how he came to hide in the fridge when the bombs fell. Obviously, you at first think this must be some trap as no one could be sitting in a fridge for 300+ years but since our curios you open the fridge. Of course, we find out the child is now a ghoul and eventually tells us he wants to return to his old neighborhood to see if his parents survived. Now, at this point I'm scratching my head HARD as there must be some twist coming up because there is no way a ghoul would survive trapped inside a cramped fridge for 300 years. The last time I checked Ghouls still needed to eat and drink water to survive even if they do have longer life spans. But, I continue on and eventually take the kid to his old home where lo' and behold his parents are alive and also Ghouls that decided to stay in the house and neighborhood and stay together for over 300 years and are just so happy to see their son alive. The quest ends right there after some short business with some local raiders. WHAT?!

Questions:
-Why didn't Billy age? Ghouls a longer life span but I don't remember Fallout lore stating that they stay at the same developmental stage they were when the bombs fell.
-What the hell was Billy doing for those 300 years? Is the quest implying that the refrigerator froze him? How could your average refrigerator freeze a person especially when there is no longer a power source for the fridge?
-Assuming he was awake in that fridge for 300 years I have to ask again what was he doing? Why couldn't he kick it open after 300 years? Was it locked air tight? If that's so how the hell could he breathe?
-Again assuming he was awake, how is he not totally insane after spending 300 years locked in a fridge in total darkness? Or why is he not feral?
-How did Billy's parents survive 300 years living in the same house when the entire neighborhood was home to a vicious raider gang? Where did they get food and supplies?
-How did they both stay together after 300 years of living together as hideous ghouls?
-Why do they act like they just lost their son a week ago instead of the 300 years it has been?

Okay, I'll stop but you get the point. Now, this may just be one small little side quest you can easily miss but to me it is indicative of Bethesda's problem when it comes to writing as a whole, they have no idea how to write a convincing world or human character. People don't act like humans and the world itself doesn't look or feel like it has been inhabited by humans for 100+ years after a nuclear fallout. Obsidian, please save us.

Found myself an explosive rifle that I upmoded to be a long range sniper. I love the weapom customization the this game. And that is coming from someone who generally hates crafting.
