I didn't like how New Vegas just pushed you out of a house and went "ok now go do something". I had no motivation to go anywhere or find out what to do.
The game was mostly filled with a lot of "why should I care?" moments and ho-hum dialogue and characters.

What I hated about New Vegas is that it forced you to stay on one path until you got to New Vegas. Fallout 4 is a return to Fallout 3's form where at the start you can just go wherever you want without that invisible wall or Cazadore bullshit.

The only part of that game I thought was honestly fantastic and well-written was the Dead Money expansion.

I'm seriously considering getting my money back on this. I love the game but I've had it lock up on me three times today in the couple of hours I've played. I had to repeat the same mission twice and lost a fair bit of progress as the autosave system is awful. Why doesn't it auto save when I discover a new location?

F:NV 26 hours
F4 53 hours

and i'm not done with F4 yet ;)
way more entertaning

One of the best parts about NV. Now if only the wastelands of NV were any more interesting than the FO3 ones.

NV was overall a better game than FO3 though.

It was made by Fallout's original creators, they always used those set-ups. Fallout 1 and 2 basically said "Hey Player, find the Water Chip/GECK" and threw you out into the world. In New Vegas it's "Find out who shot you and why" and that's it.

I personally don't like these long elaborate set-ups Bethesda has done since Oblivion where your entire motvation for doing shit is straight up thrown at you at the start. Maybe I want to roleplay as someone who doesn't give a shit about his son, Fallout 4 won't let you do that.

How many perks do you have spent in Sneaking?

You have to also kinda crawl forward on the stick. Even when sneaking your footsteps can be heard by enemies that are higher level than you.

Are you moving slowly aswell as sneaking? Also heavier armour can get you detected.

Ahh that explains it. I will try to move slower next time then. Also need to look into the sneaking perk. Don't think I have dropped a point in it yet.

Thanks!

Jesus, the pedestal that NV gets put on, lmao

Mojave was a complete snooze

Uhm it really wasnt , also we were talking about this game's horrible dialogue system.

Im curious when people say the dialogue system is fine, have they played any other fallout game?

Well the most obvious motivation at that point is find the guy who shot you in the head and try to find out why if not seek revenge.
My personal issue with NV was after that point.

Pretty much this for me as well.

And it's kind of the issue I have with F04 so far and the focus on the kid as well, nothing has made clear that your kid could even be alive since the time-frame is so fuzzy so why even ask about him in the first place ?

Yeah I've played all of them, their dialogue systems aren't anything special.

wait, PS4 framerate goes to absolute unplayable shit when you go to Corvega..? that's my next target.. fuck. i'm not ready for it, had such a terrible time with Fallout 3 on PS3 with it's massive framerate issues, i don't want to relive it again after all these years goddamnit.

i thought the new consoles could handle 25-30fps :( this is fucking bullshit.

It dropped for me but I wouldn't say it was unplayable.

Yeah, I don't really get why people think that game is so great. So many reused areas throughout that world, and just an overall boring game. Fallout 3 was much more interesting to me. But hey, opinions. Right now Fallout 4 has stolen my heart so that's all I care about at the moment.

But it doesn't. Sure, the direct ways are more difficult (Cazadors one way, Deathclaws the other), but it's completely possible to just go those ways and not die if you play it smart. In fact, I've done it on repeated playthroughs. You can be in New Vegas (or at least Freeside) within the first hour of playing.

Also, there's a perfectly good reason why you're led the long way around. If you follow it, you come across every faction in the Mojave, every little town and how the relationship is with the rest of the world. If you were just able to easily walk straight to New Vegas, everyone would do that and miss out on several important story beats. Hell, I missed out on ton of Fallout 4 beats because I decided to run straight to Diamond City, which made for a very weird game, since my character just casually started to participate in dicussions relating to The Institute, even though it was the first time he ever heard the name.

Agreed, Fallout 4 blows both of them out of the water in every way.

Fallout 4 has been absolutely fantastic so far. I'm loving it.

why is the world missing those open empty stretches?
theres a big damn town every 10 steps.
the world reminds me more of the division than fallout.
its starting to get annoying.
wheres my wasteland?

It's not hard to understand - some people play games for different reasons. It should be obvious a world that's fun to explore wasn't Obsidian's main goal with NV.

The majority of complaints about NV usually don't really make any sense. NV having the same quality of writing that the Bethesda Fallouts do is the most absurd one, tells me enough about the person to just drop the topic there and then.

The real answer to this question is because people complained about the lack of locations in Fallout 3 and especially New Vegas.

Seriously, I've seen people complain about the lack of stuff to do outside DC in Fallout 3 and of course people complained that there was 'even less' to do/see in New Vegas (even though this is in fact wrong, New Vegas had more locations and quests than FO3).

That's too far off of a goal for me. I like how in FO4 it's like:

1. Escape
2. Go home
3. Get pointed in the direction of people who can help

Finding your baby is a far off overall goal. It's nice how the game doesn't just shove you out of the vault and go "find those people".

Really like the game but have yet to do a quest that is actually memorable.
Hope Bethesda announces something new soon and everyone goes "Ooohh.. they were busy with that!"

Anyone used the console command for increase carry weight? I know its kind of cheating but i need the parts to craft and I spend an hour dropping stuff. Will I still get STEAM achievements if I put in a console command?

Considering your F4 character should only really care about saving her baby since this the wasteland is all new to her and has no emotional connection to her, it makes it hard to think she/he should be making settlements and scavenging all these locations. Fallout 3 also has this problem. New Vegas didn't because your character's life was spent entirely in the wasteland. F1 also has you starting out as a vault dweller but you're getting a device not a baby.

In order to justify my female character being a killing machine, I came up with that she was secretly trained by her father who also served in war but kept it a secret to her husband & friends since she would be looked down upon.

Getting shot in the head is not personal motivation?

You are way too easy going, dude.

Except the game makes it clear that the player
is not attacked for a personal reason, but due to what he has been paid to transport. Even if we assume that the player character wants revenge, an understandable reaction (although it seems like a world where you get shot at every day), there is no (personal) reason to get involved in the politics of the region.

That's not necessarily a bad thing, it allows for the player to come up with his/her own motivations.

Exactly this

Not sure what obsidian's goal was, but fun had nothing to do with it.

Well, not the sort of superficial fun I tend to have with Bethesda games, at least. Fun and the reasons to play games are such huge topics that they shouldn't be discussed in this thread, though.

Yep

That's not necessarily a bad thing, it allows for the player to come up with his/her own motivations.

Which is great, I want to come up with my own reasons. I want to roleplay.

This is 200 years later in Boston, of course it's packed with stuff, I like that they didn't use the excuse of Wasteland to make the world boring.

I still dont know if these faction quests ever end or not, would love to know. Antitrop aparently knows but didnt say (lol).

"My infant son has been kidnapped but I really like building shit: The Game."

It's dumb. Witcher 3 had the exact same problem (also "hey a monster is terrorizing your town? Let me come back in 6 months when I'm level 23").

Does this sense of urgency ever go away during the main quest or am I gonna have to rush through it if I don't like the idea of playing as an asshole who's in no hurry to save his own child?

ugh, I was exposed to some major spoilers while innocently reading up on some of the companions to see if they had personal quests tied to them.
Curie
was the only one who seemed to have one before I soured on the whole thing. is that correct?

The game was mostly filled with a lot of "why should I care?" moments and ho-hum dialogue and characters.

If you say that about New Vegas, I can't imagine why 4 is an improvement in that area.

The voice acting is largely great, and there are some neat concepts and characters going, but the pacing and story motivations are really bad, and restricting respectively.

It's a good thing I didn't mind playing a sarcastic badass mama tearing apart the wasteland bullet by bullet looking for her son, because that's as much depth to the role playing as you get.

has one.

The sense of urgency isn't all that urgent

I'd imagine it wouldn't have been THAT big a problem to make the map bigger and just add some empty areas here and there. Keep the level of content the same, just make it a bit sparser.

I can kinda see how someone would be turned off by coming across a new POI every 15 seconds.

Because life is getting back to normal now. Civilization is returning. In Fo3 everyone livedlike animals, there was nothing in the way of trade, or cities.
