Is there actually a way to make decent money from your settlements? I've read that you can, but it doesn't seem to be working out.

I have 4 bases connected via trade\supply routes. In a circle. So far my Sanctuary has 16 people and 4 tier 2 stores. The most I've seen is like 38 caps or so in my workbench. I feel like I would require more time than necessary to actually beat the game to make back the money spent on the stores.

I need more ammo. Have a sniper rifle that I have perks to back up, but can never find enough .308 ammo to get me through one fight. How quickly do shops restock?

Could anyone repost that hilarious image of the rage face next to the four conversational options? I know it's somewhere in this thread, but this thread is now 154 pages.

industrial.
water.
purifiers.

edit:
it stocks purified water for every 1 over your persons/required, and it restocks every refresh time/whenever you go back. i have 400+ water from sanctuary hills distributed across the wasteland's settlements and still produce 280~ bottles of water every time i come back. i didn't find out about this until near the end of the main questline, so... yeah.. i'm probably gonna avoid doing this on a replay because it trivializes all costs

OMG I want to play this so bad but school is kicking my ass right now, and Fallout is a game I can't help but play in 6 hour bursts. Just don't have the time for that right now, and I probably won't until the summer :(

Had a lot of fun with this game and a lot more to come but there's a few gameplay gripes I have:

-The game desperately needs a better way to do inventory management. The pip-boy is a cool effect but comparing weapons, armor, guns, possible upgrades, etc is just too cumbersome. Having to play inventory manager 20% of my game time is not fun. Give me the GOAT Destiny UI so I can look at and play/compare with amror/weapons.

-A lot of cool things being locked behind looting every little item is also just a huge time sink. It's cool they made every item use-able, but having to carry around Microscopes and the likes just so I can modify weapons and build my settlement detracts from the amount of weapons I want to carry, etc. An easier way to handle this would have been to have loot immediately dismantle and have the resources weigh less.

-Missions are too heavily biased towards "Clear out the enemy" which translates to run through a building and clear out the corridor and rooms. Nothing interesting and it all feels the same after 10 hours. Outdoor missions and exploration have shined; the Fort Independence, Fort Strong, and Synth Retention missions were fantastic. The game gives you so many ways to approach encounters but limits you by putting an enemy at the end of the corridor or in a small room with you 80% of the time.

-Power Armor is really fun but I think way underutilized. Maybe I'm not far enough endgame but I have 40 fusion cores and haven't stolen a single one. I've used it for 3 giant enemy fights and one or two missions but for the most part it hasn't been necessary.

Okay since I am using a humanoid companion now, I was kind of confused as to why they were not using the weapon I gave them and equipped them. Turns out, they need ammo for that weapon even if it's the same type of weapon, otherwise they will unequip and use their default one. For example, Piper uses a 10mm pistol by default, if you give her a different pistol that uses 10mm ammo you now have to give her ammo to use the weapon you gave her even if she *technically* has infinite 10mm. I guess it's the same way with Skyrim and arrows, it's only infinite if they use their default weapon.

I don't get why Bethesda keeps cutting the arena fights from their games. The Arena in Oblivion along with the DB questline was very well received by players. Now they actually made a badass arena that looks like the Thunderdome and they don't even let you fight in it.
Hopefully, they'll consider to add them as DLC like they did for FO3

Is there a guide/website showing the best place to put beds/turrets etc at the settlements? I feel like I can only have 1-2 turrets at each location, trying to figure out the best possible locations for the defenses.

I realized what has really bugged me about my three settlement sites so far: I can't be alone. I haven't set up shop in Sanctuary, a greenhouse area with robots or the gas station (dog resides there) because they are populated. I want a place to myself. Is there one?

Very much agree with both of these points. As with Skyrim, Bethesda went for neat visuals in their UI rather than one that functions well. The Pip-Boy is a neat idea but there's not enough real estate for the kind of detail needed, and it's very poorly organized. Important information is buried in tiny numbers on a sub-tab, and there's no good character stat page.

Hey guys. I'm thinking about picking this up as a gift for someone. I've got a couple questions for people who are currently playing it.

1. How much has the gunplay improved compared to Fallout 3? Would you recommend it to fans of shooters who aren't necessarily CRPG fans?

2. Is the settlement and crafting stuff optional or is it required to finish the main storyline?

Red Rocket just SE of Sanctuary has no population by default, so you could set up there.

About #2 I barely built anything more than what the quests required me to do, which is very little.

You can send the dog to sanctuary and use Red Rocket but there are other places as well you can set up with no one.

The gunplay is MASSIVELY improved from 3. This one leans more towards combat and exploration than any other game in the series. And I've barely touched the settlement stuff; it's completely optional. Crafting is also technically optional, but I've found that modding guns/armor is much more reliable than relying on loot drops.

There is one that is completely unpopulated, but they want you to build a radio tower to recruit as part of a quest.

I just recruited one person and then set them to act as a supply line to Sanctuary.

There is some, mostly requires you to kill all enemies in the area.

There's a neat little place called Hangman's Ally where clearing out the raiders gives access to the workbench and the ally all to yourself.

On mobile, so here's a wiki page.

So MacCready's "Killshot" perk is bugged, right? It's supposed to increase the accuracy of headshots in VATS 20% but ever since I got it I've never seen the headshot percentage go below 95%.

So I was exploring when I got the message Sanctuary was under attack. I quickly fast travelled back. I arrived and couldn't find any red dots. Then I saw all my settlers punching my Brahman to death. After it had died I decided to loot it and found a
Synth componant
and a institute gun with ammo.

In Fallout 3 it was pretty much a requirement to use VATS because the gunplay was awful, in Fallout 4 I vary rarely use VATS because the gunplay feels like a proper shooter. I only ever use VATS in order to proc a gun or perk.

The settlement stuff is 100% optional but the crafting stuff is pretty essential for building the kind of character you want to play as. Luckily the crafting stuff is really easy to wrap your head around.

The drive-in is empty to start and offers some neat building opportunities for going vertical. There's also Outpost Zimonja which is not far from the starting area. It's a little fortified radar outpost along the northern edge of the map that has raiders in it.

Does Dogmeat have a max weight limit on what he can carry? Because he's carrying like 100 pounds and it's insane. lmao.

Yea I think it's like 150 or something. I can load that fucker up that's for sure. He's holding my big heavy weaponry currently so that if I need it quickly I have it available.

While it's massively improved over the previous games, it's still a million miles away from Destiny (which I would say is pretty much the pinnacle when it comes to gunplay)

Haha yeah he does, I cap it out all the time. He basically is always carrying my Fat Man and Missile Launcher for any pinches I get into but I dump all the junk I collect on him too. I usually keep a few very specialized legendary weapons/armor on him too in case I need them.

Wow, I have to assume it was a bug, hilarious either way.

While some of it is down to unlucky drops with legendary enemies, having the Overseer's Guardian 'double projectile' has pushed the combat rifle sniper way over the .50 Hunting Rifle in terms of damage, not to mention semi-auto capability without bolt-action.

Gauss Rifle is pretty absurd, though. Gets comparable to a (non-boosted) Fat Man.

It is supposedly always giving you a flat 95%, yes.

Every other shooter ever is miles away from Destiny, that's quite the yard stick lol

So we are comparing Destiny to Fallout again?

Yes, I agree, Destiny's combat system is probably one, if not the best, but you really cant compare huge open world RPG with (mostly) corridor FPS shooter. Priorities in both games in terms of gunplay are somewhere else.

Oh yeah, it's improved compared to F3/New Vegas but still lags behind more dedicated shooters like Destiny, COD, etc. It could be better but for the kind of game Fallout is, I think it's very solid.

Holy shit PLEASE let this be a thing!

that ''follow the Freedom Trail'' quest was nice but the writing, lol. basically
3 people were in a hole underground with literally nothing waiting for someone to solve their riddle.

I have a quest that says to defend Tenpines bluff, but when I go there nothing happens. I even slept for two whole days there and waited a while but nothing showed up. And the quest says to talk to Preston, yet it's greyed out and when I talk to him nothing happens... Really annoying.

I'm trying to play the game in 21:9 resolution 3440x1440. The problem is I run across two issues when doing so. The HUD for power armor doesn't stretch across the screen, neither does ADS. Normal walking around is fine, but both of those look pretty weird. Here's a couple screenshots to illustrate:

ADS:

Anyone know how to fix this? I've tried every combination of these settings:

bTopMostWindow=0
bMaximizeWindow=0
bBorderless=1
bFull Screen=1
iSize H=1440
iSize W=3440

That I could think of but to no avail. If I lower the resolution to 1920x1080 or 1920x1200 this doesn't happen. But playing at those resolutions really hurts when I should be at full widescreen glory. It happens a little at 2560x1440 but isn't quite as bad.

Hacking perk worth it?

Would need to bump Perception up 1 and get the perk. Still very early in the game.

I always feel like I am missing something awesome.

It's a bit more than that. Just keep going on with their quest line.

I have him carrying some heavy weaponry. Before he was carrying power armour parts I found. If I find heavy things I just dump it on him. He's a real trooper.

I keep forgetting I can use a companion to dump additional loot.

We only figured it out the other day. We figured we could equip things to him, so what else could he do? And thus the journey of Bag Dog began.

I've had 1 in the Hacking Perk since the beginning of the game and it's been worth it in terms of story and writing I feel.

Hacking usually gets you access to storage rooms with loot and/or disabling turrets. Lore is also hidden on a lot of PCs. You won't miss anything legendary in the early goings without hacking but you may miss out on one or two fusion cores which are pretty common endgame. If I were to pick I'd probably opt for lock-picking. I went full hacker, crafting, lockpicking build and kind of regretted it.

re: gunplay. It's much improved but I think Fallout 4 also suffers from the fact that a lot of the time you are using really shitty guns. My highly modified Righteous Authority shoots like a Scout Rifle from Destiny. I have a highly modified legendary (violent does 25% more damgae) 10mm that feels like any handcannon in Destiny. It isn't quite there but it also gets a bad rap because weapons actually just handle really poorly because of their attributes.

How does one get this quest? I was just walking around Diamond City when suddenly "Follow the Freedom Trail" Mission pops onto my screen. I'm guessing a nearby NPC said something as I walked by.
