So - full disclosure, I (and many experts) cannot say how significant the following two news items are in the grand scheme of the election.

That said:

1. New polls came out, and Donald Trump is widening the gap between himself and his closest rivals in the first-in-the-nation primary reaching 23 percent, a 5-point increase from last month, while Ben Carson dropped slightly to 13 percent, down three points. Rubio also earned 13 percent, a 2-point pick-up.

2. Donald Trump has a new spokesperson, an ex-Cruz campaign member (and ex-Democrat) Katrina Pierson. Analysts seem to think this could help the campaign?

She seems nice “Islam preys on the weak and uses political correctness as cover,” she wrote on Facebook. “Two things that Americans won't be concerned with when @realDonaldTrump is in the White House.”

I was reading a thing yesterday where party leaders were talking about Paris finally being the end of Trump, but I laughed because I knew this shit would happen.

Trump cannot be killed.

Trump cannot be stopped.

He's running the classiest and most luxurious campaign in the GOP primary.

Trump vs Hillary 2016 confirmed.

Which one of their candidates isn't a lunatic, Trump comes across as the least craziness at times

Yeah, I'd take Trump over Cruz, Santorum, Huckabee, and even Carson honestly. If I had to pick a Republican who I liked, it would be the Ohio Governor. He seems to have an actual grasp on reality.

A few months ago I said in a thread something along the lines of "You guys better not elect Trump" - and someone replied "That's not even possible, because there is no way he'll even come close to winning the nomination"... so seeing as how it looks like he's going to win the nomination, he probably still won't win the election though, right?

Trump is fueled by fear and prejudice in a country where the vast majority of his political constituents are fearful and prejudicial. He's also a white businessman, which is why Ben Carson has no chance to win the GoP nomination, no matter how much Ben Carson bashes Obama and everything liberal or socialist-sounding.

In light of recent events concerning overzealous cops killing minorities and of course the ISIS terror attacks, Trump has pretty much a clear path to the nomination.

The Republican Party must be scared shitless about trump...or this is all according to plan.

I certainly NEVER predicted this. Hillary v. Trump is going to be amazing debate-wise!

Hiring an ex-Cruz campaign spokesperson is interesting considering Trump said yesterday he'd be open to Cruz being his running mate.

Donald Trump on Tuesday named Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) when asked about his possible running mate in 2016.

“Ted Cruz is now agreeing with me 100 percent,” he said when asked about his vice presidential pick, according to Lifezette.

“Well, I like him,” Trump told radio host Laura Ingraham during her broadcast. "He’s backed everything I’ve said.”

Maybe I'm looking into it too much, but I always thought it was weird how buddy-buddy they are.

Nah, he's just better at hiding his crazy. You should read what he's said on the whole refugee thing.

He'll never win the actual presidency. Ever. He's burned way too many bridges to even come close. Trump vs Hillary is going to be a legendary blowout.

Trump scares the hell out of me as far as the general is concerned. if it's Trump vs. Hillary I think it'll be a lot closer than some here would have you believe. I think Trump actually has a shot of winning against her.

i want trump to get the nomination mainly because of all the people who claimed he had no chance of doing so, apparently thinking that republicans were not by and large insane. everyone needs to see how far gone that party and their followers are.

just as long as he doesn't win the election, of course.

I feel like everyone knew that Hillary was gonna win the presidency no matter what so God just went, "Dude, what if Hillary ran against like.....Donald Trump or shit, lmao". And Jesus was like, "Holy shit dude, do it! Shit is gonna be hilarious."

And then Vishnu was like, "Nah dude, what if like.....she had to run against like.....Kanye West?" But then God was like, "Oh fuck dude, we gotta save that for 2020!"

No way dude. He's burned too many bridges with minorities to ever win. The white male vote alone isn't enough to win elections anymore.

I just can't stand the the second option we have is President Trum*HRGNH* and the Dem nominee.

I think Trump/Cruz is a strong possibility. Hell, if Trump's ego would allow it, he'd be a strong pick for anyone's VP himself. Didn't Trump and Cruz have a private meeting way back when that a lot of people speculated on?

Listen, and understand! Trump is out there! He can't be bargained with. He can't be reasoned with. He doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And he absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead.

Im much more afraid that overall Trump has not made that extremist republican side doubt themselves but emboldened and reassured them that there are people in possible positions of power that want what they want for America. So even if he loses this, they will walk away with even stronger hatred in their hearts and even more to lose in the next voting season (you know when the American public in general doesn't give a shit about voting because it isn't about some popularity contest, but actual shit that will mean something at the end of the day). Despite him being "funny ha-ha's" for everyone in on the joke.

Trump or Clinton.

No matter who wins, it is going to be a very interesting landmark in our history.

Still would prefer Bernie

I don't know man, I think you're underestimating Trump and overestimating the general population. Trump is entertaining. that alone is enough for a lot of people.

I feel like every minority in America is gonna unite to stop Trump, Lord of the Rings style.

The problem is, so many people just don't vote.

I actually could see Trump win the general election, if events outside of Clinton's control change the landscape. God forbid there's an attack on U.S. soil, or the situation in Europe worsens or something. Americans love a loud-talking bully.

Are there polls showing Trump's ratings by demographic? He's popular but there's no way he has any support among women or minorities against Hillary.

From the 2012 autopsy report authored by GOP Chairman Reince Priebus.
If Hispanic Americans perceive that a GOP nominee or candidate does not want them in the United States (i.e. self-deportation), they will not pay attention to our next sentence. It does not matter what we say about education, jobs or the economy; if Hispanics think we do not want them here, they will close their ears to our policies. In the last election, Governor Romney received just 27 percent of the Hispanic vote. Other minority communities, including Asian and Pacific Islander Americans, also view the Party as unwelcoming. President Bush got 44 percent of the Asian vote in 2004; our presidential nominee received only 26 percent in 2012.

As one conservative, Tea-Party leader, Dick Armey, told us, “You can’t call someone ugly and expect them to go to the prom with you. We’ve chased the Hispanic voter out of his natural home.”

We are not a policy committee, but among the steps Republicans take in the Hispanic community and beyond, we must embrace and champion comprehensive immigration reform. If we do not, our Party’s appeal will continue to shrink to its core constituencies only. We also believe that comprehensive immigration reform is consistent with Republican economic policies that promote job growth and opportunity for all.

And yet...

yeah I think that's a pretty important point. I don't think a Trump/Hillary general will inspire a lot of people to vote. also I think Trump sparks more enthusiasm with his base than Hillary does with hers. this isn't based on anything quantifiable but it feels like people who support Trump actually support him whereas people who support Hillary do it because they don't want a Republican in office.

I mean honestly, he seems more sane than Ben Carson to me. The thought of any of the current Republican front runners in the white house scares the shit out of me though.

You're not the only one in denial. People have been saying this for months.

That's not denial, it's recognizing the relative unimportance of polls this early and the history of election cycles. He can stay "popular" for now and it means little.

The chances of trump getting the nomination are so low I'm comfortable stating that he won't. Maybe that will change as we move forward, but right now these polls don't tell us who the nominee is going to be.

Ted Cruz has zero chance. Even people who agree with his crazy bullshit think he has an exceptionally dislikeable face, voice and manner.

it will be Rubio in the end, everyone that thinks Trump has any chance of getting the nod is delusional.

he will fizzle out soon.

A lot of GAF'ers don't understand Trump's basic appeal to the right. Think "Ronald Reagan", for older posters.

Trump may fade, but even if he does, he's going to be a hard out in the primaries. So far he's enjoyed a ton of free media coverage, so he hasn't had to dip too far into his own money. If he chooses to do so, he can do significant damage to his competition with attack ads. I mean Rubio looks like the front-runner for the establishment, but he's a serial flip-flopper and he's weak on immigration (where Trump is strong).

Rubio is a weak candidate. Trump can mangle him badly.

Maybe not, but it would take an unheard of shift in support for Trump to lose this thing. With every passing day, with every dumb fucking thing Trump says, it becomes more and more likely he's going to be the guy. Nothing can kill him.
