so they just know how to fight with lighsabers. Sweats against Kylo, but here he seems to be doing fine

From the very little footage we see here, he's not really doing much more than just wildly bashing with it. There's no evidence that he's even as skilled a swordsman as Luke in ESB.

I think it's one thing facing off against a random trooper, and another facing off against Kylo Ren, who seems to be extremely intimidating and competent, deflecting blaster shots, menacing them throughout the movie and using the force. Pants shitting seems appropriate in the latter fight.

Right, you could be competent and trained in melee combat and still get easily stomped by a force-user who basically knows what you're going to do ahead of time.

In ANH, the storm troopers allow them to escape in order to track them to the rebel base. In contrast to how lethal they were when boarding the Tantive 4.

In ESB, the storm troopers are very lethal on Both. It's not until Luke is being lured toward Vader that they start to miss.

RotJ is a bit different - they get the upper hand on Endor but end up losing to the Ewoks.

At least in 2 films, there is a plausible, in-universe explanation for their convenient inaccuracy.

look how he sways the sword, almost like Ren. Underneath then above. He's good with it.

i know some people have been whining about it, but i love the zoom in shots like that storm trooper and chewey hitting the button shots. It just looks so cool!

I'll save this comment for when they actually hit any important character or even kill one, for once

Rod Trooper is probably going get killed by a random blaster shot from Han. Don't bring a rod to a gunfight, silly

Can't wait for the Wookiepedia entry:

"Rod BoPhonozos was born to imperial settlers on the Beffelian salt planet Azzusis in the year........"

Love these tv spots. Boyega and Ford are looking so damn alive in these clips. I actually feel like Ford is going to be the best Solo he's portrayed in all four movies. He really seems on point in the few clips we've seen of him.

I knew Boyega was going to kill it thanks to Attack the Block, and even when he has to work in the American accent on top of pulling a believable performance, he seems to be holding it down damn well.

I'm unsure about Ridley, but she seems very solid based on the stuff we've seen of her. It's good she gets to use her own accent. That should have relaxed her somewhat, and let her focus on nailing the emotions and nuance of the character. I don't think a lot of people realize how difficult it is for an actor to do accents on top of their performance.

This TV spot was more Finn focused. I doubt we'll get a Poe or Ren focused spot though. They seem to really be keeping those two under lock and key until the movie releases.

Rod Trooper vs Finn is totally there to set up Finn as competent with a light saber, so we don't roll out eyes when he holds his own against Kylo. But Finn knows that Kylo is the real deal, so he's understandably pissing his pants about it!

Watched OT and TPM/AOTC in the last two weeks; in one of the prequels there's definitely a zoom shot like that one of the Falcon. Can't remember when; maybe the podrace?

I just want to hear the John Williams that plays during that fight. I'm imagining the epic music that accompanies that Stormtrooper's reveal.

I'm actually not a big fan of the electrified-battleaxe. I just think it continues diluting the specialness of being a Jedi. I'm not against competent troopers, per se, but they were always meant to be fodder.

I love these trailers in general but I've just been burned too hard by the prequels to put any stock in them anymore. If there's anything Lucasfilms has been good at, it's been putting out really good trailers. I still remember how pumped I got for The Phantom Menace from the trailer. And then I watched the film...

They can only be fodder for so long. Since Luke emerged as a legitimate threat to the Empire, Stormtroopers were probably given lightsaber-resistant weapons and some training.

Is Mandalorian iron still canon?

This is a space opera. If we're talking reality, they would just bombard them with heavy ordinance.

They should be a threat though. Much better that way. If stormtroopers are merely fodder to be sliced through and never able to pose a significant threat to our heroes, how are they any different from this?

Beyond the overly cheesy comedy-relief? Nothing. That's what they always have been. The threats to the heroes are the named villains, same as always.

Beyond the overly cheesy comedy-relief?

This movie is, by all accounts from the people making it, attempting to mine the tone and feeling of Star Wars and Empire as thoroughly as possible.

Stormtroopers weren't really overly-cheesy comic relief in those films. They were a viable threat most of the time in Empire, actually.

The idea that this is one aspect of the films that might be changed for the new trilogy probably shouldn't be seen as a negative. Or at least I dont' know why, especially if the only reason not to do it is "They weren't that in the previous films."

I don't mind it because lightsabers alone are never what made Jedi special, something the prequels seemed to forget. In A New Hope, Luke's big "Jedi moment" has nothing to do with the weapon, but rather with him trusting The Force to guide him. I agree, lightsabers are fucking awesome and I want them not to become some afterthought of what it means to be a Jedi, but I don't think having something that can stop a saber is a big deal.

Well this movie is different, but if you want to say the storm trooper can't be a threat to the main characters then realize that the main character fighting in that teaser used to be a stormtrooper. So its more like incompetent characters fighting one another and in the end they look awesome doing it!

Also I disagree with the notion of the storm trooper being incompetent in the canon, maybe in in Episode 4 they were, the original movie, but they showed plenty of times where they at least had enough competency to trap main characters or force those characters into more dangerous situations. Not to mention the prequels (and especially clone wars tv series) definitely made them to be more then just bumbling blind buffoons.

Perhaps I wasn't clear but I wasn't suggesting that they were. I was referring to the droids.

If I don't love that bit, it's no different from people loving that bit. If some can see it as a positive, I can see it as a negative. If folks are happy that something is great because it is different, I can be unhappy that something isn't the same. That said, that's by far not the only reason I'm not in love with it but it's just a bit from a trailer so I'm not going to go on and on about it and who knows what the context in the full film is.

One vs. one? I'm not talking about overwhelming with numbers here. Anyway, I may be the lone dissenter on it and that's fine.

I feel lik JJ went full anime with his camera work. Everything looks só energetic and powerfull. It looks great!

Can't handle the hype anymore.

Yup, it was one of the things I was looking forward to most, which was seeing a legit SW film without Lucas' utterly bland shooting style.

Does he fucking switch hands mid deflection? Boss.

Nah his torso is already turned the other direction at the start of the gif. If you look at the sparks/smoke right one frame 1, it looks like he has already swung and deflected on blast, then swings back and spins the other way away too.

Something seems off about this shot. Not a huge fan of it. It looks kinda cheap, like a videogame commercial or something. Might be cooler during the actual movie though so I might end up changing my mind. Also I really hope that's not a Raid actor. I'm hoping they are using those dudes for the
Knights of Ren

I'm half expecting that Storm Trooper to start pelvic thrusting or he just shat himself.

I'm loving how they are looking to be actually quite menacing and not useless.

Echoing a lot of other sentiments here, but I'm really glad we're finally getting decent troopers. We've never seen what a "special forces" trooper looks like, so color me excited!

The troopers kind of have to be competent and threatening in this movie, because one of the main characters is a First Order trooper. If they're all useless fodder, how do we rationalize that with our main hero trooper being a badass and clowning all over the other troopers? It would only draw attention to the contradiction. They need to be shown to be a bit more than just those silly guys who the old wizard fools by waving his hand. They are trained soldiers raised into the military and indoctrinated since childhood. That's why Finn gets to be a badass, because he is one of them whose moral compass is corrected, and why he knows they are in trouble when the First Order comes after our main characters.

It'd crack me up if we got this exchange:

Han: Are you sure you're ready for this?
Finn: Hell no.
Han: Then I'll see you in hell!

(Han runs off after Chewie to do something stupid and heroic).

That exchange will never happen, but it makes me chuckle.

This movie looks like it's going to be a lot of fun. I'm very curious to see how the lightsaber combat plays out. It doesn't look like it's going to be over the top flashy, like the prequels were (which I enjoyed the flashiness, truth told. It was Jedi in their prime, so the over the top dance moves worked for me in that context), but it also doesn't look like it's going to be slow and lumbering, like the OT. I think we're going to get something in the middle; faster paced by OT standards, but still have physical weight to swinging the sword, so it's not too fast like the PT.
