Captain America: Civil War Trailer #1 Debut

Regarding Black Panther:
I wonder if he's there for his own reasons just to basically investigate and spy on both sets of heroes. If I remember correctly, in the comics he eventually revealed his reason for joining the Avengers was to spy on them and see how much of a thread they would be to Wakanda.

Keep in mind that panther is also a head of state, and the "accords" that Thunderbolt Ross is rolling out are very likely to be an international thing.

Panther probably has an interest in preventing what happened in Africa with Tony and Hulk from happening anywhere else just like every other country.

I mean yeah, it's T'Challa we're talking about.
he is obviously playing both sides, I'm still not convinced there isn't some malevolent force pulling the strings here and won't be surprised when Panther is the one to point it out and make everyone stop fighting eachother.

Yup. In the comics he can Lift/press 20 tons as a baseline. He's been known to hold the weight of entire skyscrapers on his shoulders when required.

Spidey could squash all of them if he wanted to.

I don't think you should take the comics too literally in their depiction of Spidey's powers. I imagine he'll be stronger than Cap but obviously nowhere near Thor or Hulk. He ought to be the most agile Avenger as well.

Oh, I know all about marvel. Just trust me on this one.

Not really a strength argument, but a skill and experience one. Adult Parker got lit the fuck up by Cap in civil war. And that was with the iron spider gear.

Remove 16 years of combat experience and throw Bucky in. THAT spider man wouldn't get anywhere near those two.

Again, I don't think you should take a fight from the comics too literally. Spidey might well zip in there and take out Bucky with his webs, and while Cap's momentarily shocked Stark knocks him out with a repulsor blast.

Fox announced X-Men TV shows as well.

I thought they didn't have the rights to those? Did they negotiate them from Marvel or was I misinformed?

By the way: is Fox's Deapool set in the same universe as their X-Men franchise?

I assume that must be the intention given that they've used the same actor as Wolverine Origins. Although the timeline in the X-Men films is pretty fucked now, so who knows if he'll come into contact with the X-Men, whether they will try to reconcile that or just outright ignore it (most likely ignore).

In terms of politics and legality? Yes Cap is wrong. And if it takes him proving their point in broad daylight, he will do it to protect Bucky. Cap may wear the flag but he's not a slave to it. Whether you feel that is truly right or wrong of him is up to you, and that's the kind of grey area thinking that Civil War should be about. It's the kind of thing Miller forgot when he wrote the book.

I think the contention will come from The Winter Soldier seeming to be behind a terrorist-like attack (shown at the beginning of the trailer). He'll say he wasn't, Cap will believe him, the rest of the world won't.

So in that way Cap would have a legitimate reason to protect Bucky beyond "he's my friend". It'll probably be a "You have the wrong guy" deal.

I hate Deadpool, a Rob Liefeld bastard creation rip-off on a DC Character than turned into a joke character after Liefeld left

Deadpool has no value in the Marvel Universe

He was always meant to be a joke character hence his name, and Fabian Ncieza was the writer who came up with the character and speech mannerisms . As you already said Liefeld showed the costume and description to Fabian and he outright told him ...yeah thats Deathstroke from TT, so he named him Wade Wilson. Not the most inside of jokes to say the least.

I guess Ant-Man is in the trailer?

Seems like an obvious ploy by Zemo/Crossbones in a calculated attempt to throw the team into inner conflict.

Yeah, they'll nerf him. Comics Spidey would use MCU Hulk as a punching bag. Can't have that.

did you miss my follow up? This spider man is supposed to be about 15 years old. I don't care what his powers are, he's not going to want to wade into a fight with anyone with the reputation and abilities of those two, and doesn't have any experience fighting as a team with anybody.

and did you watch winter soldier? "catching bucky by surprise" isn't something that just happens. Dude was the world's greatest assassin for 70 straight years.

Lots of interesting stuff from the trailer:

- There’s a strong visual focus on Team Cap in this trailer – perhaps Team Iron Man will be the visual focus for the next?

- As others have noted, Bucky is the emotional heart of the story, which makes perfect sense and rounds out the ‘Cap trilogy’ while being true to the comics (given his importance to Cap). Bucky has always been a symbol of Cap’s greatest failure, first through his death and then through his rebirth. This movie is about Cap redeeming himself for that failure and Bucky redeeming himself for crimes he committed under duress, something neither character could do in Winter Solider.

- Similarly, Bucky is the physical embodiment of the story’s moral conflict. He represents the single surviving strand of Cap’s past, in his present. He represents freedom of choice and new starts (thus, America’s core ideals). He represents power without control, and the question of what to do with it when it is eventually controlled. In short, Bucky is the accords. Which is far easier to represent in an opening trailer than trying to force a moral message into 2 minutes, in a movie about superheroes. People want punching and pyro in that short time, not a debate - and the debate will clearly come, because…

- …Steve and Tony’s friendship is going down the tubes. Rhodey’s lack of presence bar the brief snippets is curious (although not unexpected – given the short trailer time, there’s only so much you can fit in). Bar Happy and Pepper, Rhodey is Tony’s closest friend and the opposite number to Bucky. His fall (he’s blatantly not dead in that trailer - but it’s a nice nod to the events of comics) makes things personal. The ideological break between Stark and Rodgers has been playing for a while in the movies, and while Civil War was never going to be purely about ‘muh friends!’, the presence and importance of Rhodey and Bucky are great symbols and visual shortcuts to how different Stark and Rodgers are, and how there may well be little turning back by the movie’s end without someone from that four either biting it or being seriously injured.

- Spidey’s no show shouldn’t be too surprising. Save that for the big, close-to-release trailer. People are already excited to see the big names duking it out, so there’s no need for Marvel to blow its load all at once. Plus, let’s face it, Spidey will be among the more difficult to ‘get right’ in terms of CGI/technical aspects (even with the Russo’s penchant for practical effects), and his involvement in its production was later than most. If Marvel and Sony really want to distance themselves from the previous movies, they need to feel confident about what they show (people are already complaining about the CGI in this trailer, which shows the trailer makers have probably made the right choice).

- Black Panther’s presence and aggression towards Team Cap makes sense in this universe. Wakanda has already been fucked with due to Klaw, and they’ve seen what unchecked superheroics can do from Age of Ultron. T’Challa is all about the protection of Wakanda and his interests, and hasn’t any friendship with Cap (that we’ve seen), so purely from a political aspect he’d likely want to stay ‘lawful’ on foreign soil, given he’s a monarch. That said, if it’s Priest era T’Challa (best T’Challa) he’s always working about 5 moves ahead, so working with Tony just to hack/spy on the US government/get whatever he wants, works – either way, Based Panther wins. I suspect he’ll be in the movie far less than we expect anyway, acting more as a link for his own solo movie than anything else.

I'm excited. I hope they give both sides a fair shot. None of the "oh clearly Tony Stark is wrong, so go Cap!" or the other way around. I would like them to leave it open enough that either one of them could be the good guy.

Also, I was hoping to see Spidey but I guess they have to save that reveal for the movie or a very late trailer right before the movie premiers.

Great trailer. I actually can't wait to see what the Russos have in store/ Hopefully they don't character assassinate Stark like they did in the comics

prepare for that nasty blue filter and others throughout. Watch it then you'll see.

(yes it's that blue).

I only remember it being that blue in that opening sequence. Everything after that was quite colourful

The trailer is already doing a far better job of making me feel sorry for Tony as opposed to the comics, where he was just a dick.

Humm, i wonder if T'Challa is going to have the role that Spidey had on the comics.

Starts on Stark's team, realizes he ain't shit, changes to Cap's team

I know that Spidey is going to show up but i'm not sure if he's going to be prominent to the story or just an intro for the future.

YYYYYYEEEEEESSSSSSSSS

These two posts next to each other are hilarious.

Yep. That got me hyped.

Still can't believe Winter Soldier came out, blew me away, and made Cap my favorite Avenger. Never thought that'd be possible.

Can't wait to see what this film does.

I'd hate that. T'Challa should be on #TeamWakanda first and foremost. Preferably only.

Considering he was the replacement for one black man, it's only fitting that he dies off for Black Panther.

come on now, this isn't walking dead. you don't need to kill off a black guy every time a new one shows up

Hype as hell seeing General Ross again. So happy to see TIH gets some more love in the MCU. Trailer was badass.

yeah that was a shock. Hell of a callback too and it makes perfect sense. I thought they'd forgotten all about the first MCU film.

I think that's right. It's every hero so far in the film universe so far bar Thor and Hulk. Don't forget others who are going to be in the film:

Baron Zemo
Crossbones
Red Hulk (rumoured)

It's going to be very busy.
Jesus we didn't even see Zemo, we don't even really know the role he's going to play, do we?

Also no way Marvel would waste Ross coming back and not being Red Hulk.
