Captain America: Civil War Trailer #1 Debut

Lots of interesting stuff from the trailer:

- There’s a strong visual focus on Team Cap in this trailer – perhaps Team Iron Man will be the visual focus for the next?

- As others have noted, Bucky is the emotional heart of the story, which makes perfect sense and rounds out the ‘Cap trilogy’ while being true to the comics (given his importance to Cap). Bucky has always been a symbol of Cap’s greatest failure, first through his death and then through his rebirth. This movie is about Cap redeeming himself for that failure and Bucky redeeming himself for crimes he committed under duress, something neither character could do in Winter Solider.

- Similarly, Bucky is the physical embodiment of the story’s moral conflict. He represents the single surviving strand of Cap’s past, in his present. He represents freedom of choice and new starts (thus, America’s core ideals). He represents power without control, and the question of what to do with it when it is eventually controlled. In short, Bucky is the accords. Which is far easier to represent in an opening trailer than trying to force a moral message into 2 minutes, in a movie about superheroes. People want punching and pyro in that short time, not a debate - and the debate will clearly come, because…

- …Steve and Tony’s friendship is going down the tubes. Rhodey’s lack of presence bar the brief snippets is curious (although not unexpected – given the short trailer time, there’s only so much you can fit in). Bar Happy and Pepper, Rhodey is Tony’s closest friend and the opposite number to Bucky. His fall (he’s blatantly not dead in that trailer - but it’s a nice nod to the events of comics) makes things personal. The ideological break between Stark and Rodgers has been playing for a while in the movies, and while Civil War was never going to be purely about ‘muh friends!’, the presence and importance of Rhodey and Bucky are great symbols and visual shortcuts to how different Stark and Rodgers are, and how there may well be little turning back by the movie’s end without someone from that four either biting it or being seriously injured.

- Spidey’s no show shouldn’t be too surprising. Save that for the big, close-to-release trailer. People are already excited to see the big names duking it out, so there’s no need for Marvel to blow its load all at once. Plus, let’s face it, Spidey will be among the more difficult to ‘get right’ in terms of CGI/technical aspects (even with the Russo’s penchant for practical effects), and his involvement in its production was later than most. If Marvel and Sony really want to distance themselves from the previous movies, they need to feel confident about what they show (people are already complaining about the CGI in this trailer, which shows the trailer makers have probably made the right choice).

- Black Panther’s presence and aggression towards Team Cap makes sense in this universe. Wakanda has already been fucked with due to Klaw, and they’ve seen what unchecked superheroics can do from Age of Ultron. T’Challa is all about the protection of Wakanda and his interests, and hasn’t any friendship with Cap (that we’ve seen), so purely from a political aspect he’d likely want to stay ‘lawful’ on foreign soil, given he’s a monarch. That said, if it’s Priest era T’Challa (best T’Challa) he’s always working about 5 moves ahead, so working with Tony just to hack/spy on the US government/get whatever he wants, works – either way, Based Panther wins. I suspect he’ll be in the movie far less than we expect anyway, acting more as a link for his own solo movie than anything else.
Nothing has happened to Wakanda.

Is this the new "It looks like a TV show" post?

True Savior doesn't like the MCU films.

Some of the CGI shots are clearly WIP though.

As for framing/directing/etc, acting like Blockbuster films are somehow above the low art that is TV/Cable series is silly in 2015. There are a number of TV shows now that take way more creative risks than 95% of summer blockbusters.

“Tony’s defining characteristic is his egomania, in a lot of ways,” adds Anthony Russo, “and we thought it would be interesting to bring him to a point in his life where he was willing to submit to an authority, where he felt it was the right thing to do.”

Tony is also driven by the ghosts of Age Of Ultron, by the vision he had there of the return of Thanos and the destruction of the Avengers and Earth. “He now has a guilty complex,” says Joe Russo, “and the guilt drives him to make very specific decisions.”
Sounds like Tony's gonna be battling some inner demons in this.

Don't see how superflous is that motive.

Ok maybe not, but they definitely put too much emphasis around Cap-Bucky bromance, so it kind gives that impression.

His screentime will go up with the next Avengers film once his inevitably become a fan favorite

Here is hoping, he is one of the most unique heroes in the MCU, not to mention he also gets the best outfit in the live films so far.

The story and central conflict seems very interesting but damn do these movies lack cinematic visual flair. Looked like an episode of 24

This looks great. Personally, I'm glad they're keeping Spiderman under wraps. I want to see him in the movie itself. Considering they'll likely show him in future trailers, I'll probably limit my trailer viewing for this movie to just one. I'm pleased with what I've seen so far.

I think that was a joke because that's what's been said about Iron Man since IM1.

I dunno CGI in AOU was awful at times.

The opening raid on the Hyrda base has the worst CGI in any phase 2 film, and arguably the worst since The Incredible Hulk. Certain way below the standard you expect from a huge tentpole film. I just wonder if it was down to Ike Perlmutter holding the purse strings. As salaries had gone up and backend bonus had crept in, he made sure production costs were cut.

Bucky is his best and oldest friend. I love the concept that Steve Rogers is exactly the type of man that would move heaven and earth for his friends.

yep..it rings truer to his character than anything else. He joined the Army and believes in the 40's version of what the American dream is..its in his core as a person. Bucky was a part of that from the very beginning. Having Hydra's brainwashing as an out for Bucky's mistakes..there's no way Steve Rogers doesn't go to war for him.

going by the trailer Captain has Bucky, Ant-man, Hawkeye, Wanda, and Falcon.

Stark's team looks lackluster. War machine is extensively around, but not for long. Besides Vision and potentially Black Panther, his "team" is boring.

Stark is about all-new heroes and Rogers is keeping the Avengers rooster.

Vision could handle all of them simultaneously, except he likely won't because he's a better guy than any of them.

Pretty low, TWS was a serious film during it's entire running time. Other that Black Widow trying to set Cap up for dates it was played totally straight.

I know the original poster talked about jokes but the intro had a lot of humour. "On your left", Cap's notebook, "picking up a fossil" etc.

Yeah but after it was mostly gone. The opening was just there to introduce the other guy so it made sense it was more friendly. The rest of the movie was an old school spy movie disguised as a superhero film and much better because of this.

Yeah, it definitely benefit from it. I think it's important to have that humour there every now and then though, to remind you that these characters have personalities. I always laugh at Sam L Jackson's delivery of "Yeah, I know. They're a little bit bigger than a .22".

Using that natural athleticism. GAWD

I really think that Spidey and Panther are both third wheels, they don't pick sides, but fight their own fights.

Maybe it's War Machine, Crossbones, Vision, Spidey and to extend Panther.

:P I don't think Crossbones is in Tony's team either.

I wonder what the angle is for Spidey? I mean, I don't think he's going to be part of the Avengers right off the gate, so how come he's dragged into it?
#TeamCaptain

Fuck Tony and everyone who agrees with him.
:( I like Tony. He's not comic-Civil War Tony, he's movie Tony. A lovable asshole who has put his life on the line to save the team multiple times and is afraid of losing.

Well they were still there. Just not in your face so much. I loved the 'bye bye bikini's' 'yeah I bet you look terrible in em now' exchange between widow/cap. And there were a few moments more like that.

I remember in the early issues of ultimate spider man that fury was keeping tabs on him and told him once he hit 18 he would be forced to join the avengers. Maybe Ross and his group will do the same for this program

Ohhh interesting.
When Tony fires a repulsor beam past Captain America's head, it reminds me of how Han dodged Greedo's blaster shot.
It seems like he misses the shot because Bucky hits him with the shield then.

yea, I do wish MCU Movies had better cinematography and creative shots. The Defenders shows on Netflix are better at this so far.

But it gets the job done

As for BP, he should be mad at Ironman more for the events of AoU

That leaked footage of crossbones is the business.

As a huge fan of Brubaker's Cap Runs (Y'all saying his death in Civil War being lame haven't read Reborn), crossbones in this film makes me so happy.

Throw in T'challa and Spider-man, the Interviews describing the plot and details, and the chance for another theme like Taking a Stand, and I am so in.

Ohhh interesting.

Cap throws the shield to make Stark miss, then Bucky catches it after the ricochet.

And probably a nice PR move for them to take a likely urban legend and show the world someone like that coming into the light as a registered hero. I imagine a young geeky Peter would be all into working with Tony and getting a cool suit

Looks awesome. The GAF Marvel Haters Club is gonna be hateful, but it looks fun and the trailer was actually more emotional than expected.

Now that I think about it he's probably in it for the spider bike.
Spidey knows chicks love bikes.

You're right. I checked the video again and it's clearer than it was in the gif.

Iron Spider-Man was a thing in the Civil War comic.
Yeah, but I bet here Peter gets his classic Spiderman suit from Tony. That's really the only realistic way I could see a young high schooler being able to get a costume that doesn't look like it was put together in the bedroom of his aunt's house

Best part of the trailer for me. Don't even know much about him. Was actually about to start searching what the best Black Panther books to read. I hate just reading the wiki's these days.

To anyone who wants to start on some BP goodness, read Black Panther: Man Without Fear. It's fucking fantastic and shows why the character is so great.
