I've narrowed these two as a final selection (unless you can see room for improvement from the specs chosen) Just wanted to know why the bottom model costs 300+ more when the components seem relatively the same and if the difference is worth it.

So my laptop was discounted 50.01 usd two days after I bought it.

I contacted Amazon's support, and they are going to give me back that amount in the next 2-3 business days.

CScvdza.png
Thank you Scott, you're the real mvp.
This totally makes up for my bank charging me 48 extra usd for whatever reason.

So my gpu clock issues with the msi gs60 (970m) keep coming back randomly. According to GPU-z, core clock always runs at the right speed but memory clock will stay capped at 799.2 when the problem occurs and it stays like that for a while, persisting even after reboots. One time it happened, I had the Witcher 3 running in the background, laptop plugged and charging and had the laptop go to sleep on its own. Upon resume, memory clock dropped and my framerates went from 55-60 to the 30s. I still haven't figured out how to get it out of that state. I could be in High Performance, Sport Shift and it still won't up the memory clock. It just fixes itself after some time though.

Is this some sort of throttling I'm experiencing? I don't think GPU temps have reached past 75 yet and its pretty chilly here at the moment. Maybe its the cpu downclocking (admittedly haven't checked the cpu speeds yet) as well?

I'm currently looking at the Alienware 15 r2 that has a 980m for $1850. It seems like the best deal I can find anywhere with a mobile card like that. Dell also has fantastic financing options, especially with 12 months 0%.

Are there better options out there?

The difference is because the bottom one has a desktop processor, not a mobile one.

Hi do you think the performance difference is worth it?
That dependes entirely on your needs, because while the 6700k will have better performance it runs hotter and needs more power, which means your battery life will be shorter.
Also both are unlocked parts, but in the case of the 6700k I doubt it has much headroom to overclock so probably WSIWYG with performance (in turns this means that by overclocking the 6820HK you could potentially close the gap).

So a lightweight Laptop for work with great battery life with light gaming (SC2, LOL, steam indie games)....

The new Dell XPS 15 or Surfacebook?

Hi I'm not looking into overclocking. However the increased heat will it cause a problem? I'm usually hooked up to something and only when am I on the plane I require battery life. Prolly won't be gaming on plane so I don't think thatd be a issue .

The XPS should be way superior in both cpu and gpu departments but I'm not so sure about battery life. Just a guess, but I think the 1080p xps should be able to do around 6-7 hours. The Book on the other hand seems to do 10+ hours easily and should be more portable but it can get quite pricey with the dgpu option, which doesn't even seem to come close to the 960m inside the xps 15.

If you need pen functionality, then the surface book seems like a good option but I personally would just get the XPS (it was actually my first choice when looking for a laptop recently)

Holy shit. Notebookcheck just posted their review of the AW15 R2 (Revision with Skylake) : http://www.notebookcheck.net/Alienware-15-R2-Notebook-Review.153808.0.html

Here is the cliff notes:

- 7 and a half hour of battery life in both Wi-fi test and 1080p test.

- Fantastic construction on the chassis

- Great Keyboard (keytravel, little flex, good spacing, numpad. Only minus is those dumb media keys in left side)

- Cooling is fantastic. It's not a ultrabook thin notebook, and it's heavy coming in at 3,1kg (6 pounds), but you get a machine that doesn't melt.

- 1080p IPS display is great, but the 4K touch display is amazing, bright and has fantastic color.

- Good loud speakers

- You can upgrade HDD, RAM and even add 2 M2 slots. So if you wanted to you could 2x 512 GB SSD M.2, and then a 2 TB HDD or hybrid SSHD in the 2.5 HDD slot.

- You can disable all the illumination bullshit if its not your fancy.

To me this is heaven, because virtually other gaming notebooks have terrible battery. I want a notebook with real power, but I need to do stuff with it for a lot of hours away from an outlet during the day as I am doing other stuff like writing on it. And I dont want a secondary notebook just for that.
The other thing is that some other mobile notebooks focus on a thin and light design, and then become a throttled mess, overheat and reduce the lifespan. those Arourus notebooks are thin as hell, but if the temps go that high that fast, then what is the point?

I'm gonna save for one of these guys. I'm not gonna need a 980m, 970m is more than enough, but I want to opt for that 4K Display. I need to use it for editing. I'll just game in 1080p. Scaling never made a visible difference to me. Windows scaling has gotten a lot better over the years.
I also like I can buy it bare bones. I'll upgrade with my own ram, hard drive and SSDs.

I hope the competition follows suit. I'm not going to buy a gaming laptop with 2-3 hour battery. even a gaming computer can be used for different things, and being glued to an outlet constantly, just sucks!

I see that they're finally offering the 980 with 8GB of video memory, that's very good. I may just grab one of these.

Thanks for the reply, I'm only staying in the US for the following 2 weeks before I go back to my country so I'm not sure I can wait for that one. Other recommendation? Any brand I should look for? Dell, Lenovo, etc?

Thanks again for the help. Much appreciated

One of these?

Try reinstalling the latest Nvidia driver with its Custom -> clean install option.

Better built options? No.
Hi do you think the performance difference is worth it?

Probably will be. 4.5Ghz desktop CPU will go a long way.

Probably will be. 4.5Ghz desktop CPU will go a long way.

I'm actually at the same impasse as him looking at those two models (albeit from Eurocom), but I'm sort of curious as to how much louder the 6700K will be under load versus the mobile variant at stock. I get that a 91W part is going to put out a hell of a lot more heat than a 45w part, but just how much that translates to overall fan noise I'm having a rough time finding out.

I have to assume that it's one of those universally accepted truths of "If you have to ask about the fan noise, it's likely too noisy for you".

Also, is there any sort of significant difference in performance between soldered on GTX980M and the MXM variant? Eurocom seems to list different TDPs (75W soldered, 100W MXM), but same core/mem speeds at stock. I'm assuming it's just to give the MXM board more OC headroom?

Buying laptops is hard.

Hi K Jack sorry to bother you again!

I'm back and i still wasn't able to shoot the gun for the purchase :(.
I'm looking at the Sager 17 inch with the same specs and the 15 inch. Price difference is only $50 dollars ish. Any recommendations on this? I'll be playing on this as a gaming laptop and will probably only move it during holidays.

I have worries about the 17 inch regarding cooling pad( what is recommended for a build of that size?) and how to transport it safely?

Out of curiosity, does anyone here use MSI Afterburner with the latest Nvidia drivers?
For my Lenovo Y50, MSI Afterburner + NVidia drivers versions 358.XX and higher cause my GPU to crap out and do a driver-restart. I've been using driver 355.98 in the meantime.

Hello there people, I am looking for a gaming laptop for £500 or less. I'm looking for the best you can get for gaming performance (basically, I want an average modern game to run on medium at least with decent performance (which I would say is a solid 30fps minimum)), with everything else secondary , although I would appreciate a good screen, keyboard, etc. A decent-sized hard drive would also be nice. Weight and comfort doesn't matter much to me. And nope, I can't get a desktop, I lack the space for it! Thanks very much!

6700K won't be any louder, because the laptop it's in has a cooling solution that was built to keep it cool at low volumes.

MXM 980M and soldered are exactly the same.

Once you go 17", you won't want to go back.

You absolutely shouldn't buy a cooling pad. Any laptop that needs one isn't worth buying, and I have never once recommended a laptop that needs one.

As far as transport, there are great laptop bags on Amazon.

Sorry but I don't use the MSI tool.

Does it restart with just any overclock, or after a specific level? Like, if you lower from your usual, does it still happen?

Best you'll do is a laptop equipped with the GT 940M, and I certainly can't promise the performance level you're seeking, as the chance is zero to none.

I use MSI Afterburner for in-game statistics and for RivaTuner's framerate control. No overclocking.
On driver 358.XX, even without framerate control, if MSI Afterburner is running, the game will eventually crash and the GPU driver will restart, and I have to reboot the computer to re-enable the GPU.
I haven't tested driver 359.00, but I don't expect it to behave any differently.

It does make me wonder if MSI Afterburner is mucking with OC, which would be really weird as I haven't changed any defaults. I still suspect something on Nvidia's end, but I might test again later.

Hello friends

I have been doing a bunch of traveling lately, and ive been thinking about going for a power laptop. I want to obviously be able to game, but also want to do things like dual boot (linux), vm work, programming etc.

First, are they still using mobile GPUs? There was some news that nvidia was going to start putting full GPUs in laptops. I gotta have GSYNC too. So with that where should i start my search?

Once you go 17", you won't want to go back.

Truth. It seems harder than ever to get 17" nowadays though. Had a 17" inspiron, a 17" xps, but lately it seems like most of those "good but not top of the line" laptops cap out at 15".

I'm looking to buy a laptop for work but need it to be pretty powerful. The laptop my employer loaned me is a 5 year old dell vostro that's impossibly slow.

It's not a pressing need atm but frustrating seeing how few 17" options there are out there compared to a few years ago. And i don't want a touchscreen either, making this search even more of an ordeal.

There's actually been reports that 359 has unfuzzed a lot of the issues the 358 drivers brought. Can't hurt to try.

So with that where should i start my search?
Start with a budget. Thoughts?

MSI, Clevo, Alienware, and Asus still offer plenty of 17" options.

I hope 1060M represents a jump up from the 960M (which is essentially a 860-and-a-smidgen-more M, I think, performance wise). :(

The latest drivers (after 355.**) have a problem with the 860M:
https://forums.geforce.com/default/topic/894437/geforce-drivers/please-fix-drivers-for-860m-/
https://forums.geforce.com/default/...ue-with-r358-driver-release-updated-11-30-15-

They're going to release a hotfix for it soon.

As for MSI Afterburner, I'd suggest not using it since it messed with the clocks on my graphic card with or without overclocking causing the driver to crash. I use RivaTuner and HWiNFO64 for in-game stats and nvidia inspector for overclocking.

Should a touchscreen laptop feel similar to a smartphone or tablet? I bought a yoga 700 and the touchscreen seems really 'sticky' - drags on my finger and almost feels rough to the touch because of it. Generally unpleasant to use. Tried a few in PC world just now and the surface pro 4 feels great - nice and slick like an iPad. The Lenovos are also generally ok, but they had a display yoga 700 which was a bit sticky (but not as much as mine).

HWiNFO doesn't support framerate/frametime monitoring, does it? It doesn't seem like it does based on what I've read.

2.5k - 3k.

I dont really know how certain parts translate to the laptop scene outside GPUs.

Well, if you want desktop power, this has a desktop i7-6700K, and the full desktop GTX 980, and an IPS w/ internal G-SYNC . Just under $3k too.

LinusTechTips video.

Hi again Kjack,

Should i go for NP9870-S? XD.... i'm terrible at making the final decision...

It's a beast. If I was in the market and couldn't wait 6-7 months for Pascal, I'd be on it.

I hope 1060M represents a jump up from the 960M (which is essentially a 860-and-a-smidgen-more M, I think, performance wise). :(

I have high hopes for Pascal, and expect the "1060M" to be faster than the GTX 970M.

I feel most "affordable" laptop touchscreens simply don't (or can't) put the budget in which is needed for the high quality touch technology.

The hype is getting real! I'm going to pick up my new laptop tomorrow.

MSI HYPE!

What is pascal?

Nvidia's GPUs set for a 2016 release. It's both a die shrink and new architecture, meaning the performance boost over Maxwell will be huge.

Expected in the Summer 2016 range.

So I bought a laptop for 800€ and it's really not what I wanted. :/ Shit! Don't know why it cost so much when even the on-board graphic card does a better job than the dedicated Radeon, haha!! It wasn't even supposed to be a gaming laptop, though being able to play at least some 7 year old games on low would have been nice. Thinking of building a desktop for ~900€ max...That will get me through the next years much better.

Rant finished!

HWiNFO doesn't have a FPS counter but RTSS does if you enable "Show own statistics".
Rivatuner has a framerate counter, but it doesn't have a frametime counter that tells you how many ms it took for a frame to render.
Oh well. I'll just keep an eye on my GPU clocks.

Maybe you did something wrong. For that price you get a GTX 950M which is much better than any iGPU and also does a good job even on modern games.

Can we expect nvidia to launch a mxm Pascal gpu?

I would love to be able to upgrade my gt72s to Pascal if I decided to, in the future.

I have to imagine MXM sticks around, but Nvidia is literally the only supplier of MXM for themselves and AMD, so they have us by our dangly bits on that one.

It's doubly important, because MSI has flat-out promised future upgradeability for GT72 owners, and many of us bought in at least partially on the back of that promise.

If you don't NEED a gaming laptop, buy a cheap laptop + build a desktop.

That's my plan now. :)

Well it's an £850 laptop so you'd think it'd be decent enough (only cost me £550 but that's beside the point..) nice glass screen but just drags on the finger.

I'll prolly just go for that laptop and then when that comes out i'll get it for my desktop and improve it from the GTX 670

All the new heavy workstations (Dell's Precision M7x10, HP's ZBook G3, Lenovo's Px0) use MXM slots, so at least the pro lines will be available for it... they'll be expensive, mind :P

I figure this is a good thread to ask this. I recently bought an MSI Laptop and a SSD drive. When the laptop arrives I plan on immediately swapping out the HDD with the SSD. Will I be able install Windows 10 from a USB drive on the SSD directly?

I'm not too familiar with how Windows 10 works, but I think I heard that the license is attached to the motherboard, or something like that, you may want to finish activating/installing windows 10 before making the swap just in case.

(If the laptop comes with windows 10 preloaded)

I have to imagine MXM sticks around, but Nvidia is literally the only supplier of MXM for themselves and AMD, so they have us by our dangly bits on that one.

It's doubly important, because MSI has flat-out promised future upgradeability for GT72 owners, and many of us bought in at least partially on the back of that promise.

I hope so, I will start saving for a desktop next year, but if a desktop solution isn't viable in a couple of years. I hope I can at least upgrade my gpu to keep my laptop more up to date.
