Fallout 4 PC Performance Thread

Really wish we would get SLI working officially soon, or at least hear something on it.

Running at 4K I get good performance much of the time, but it dips too low sporadically to be acceptable. So dropped it down to 1440, where I get 60FPS the majority of the time. (Still with dips but playable ones).

But I miss that 4K crispness, especially on trees and buildings. It really is such a huge leap, even over 1440p.

I'll be shocked if we get official support. Best bet is probably to force it via Nvidia Inspector. It works great for me. I'm able to actually play at 10 megapixels. There are a few minor graphical glitches that happen, but I can deal with that. It's worth the extra frames.

Glad I'm not the only one. It must be the engine because I only notice it in this game. Reinstalling the game onto my SSD to see if that changes anything. I doubt it, but it's worth a shot.

The only thing that clears that up for me is clamping the FPS to 60 via the INI. It will mess up Vault doors and you'll have to disable the tweak whenever you encounter a door you can't open. But its a godsend, the game is smooth as silk with it on.

Anyone with a GTX 750 Ti that has any tips? I'm using the Digital Foundry settings, and seems great for most part, getting 60 fps here and there, but as low as 36 the odd time. The rest of my specs are high, CPU i7-4770, 16GB RAM

You'd be *shocked* if Fallout 4 gets SLI support?? You're making me sad bro :(

I could've sworn there were multiple comments by NVidia staff in the forums that they were working on it?

I would not get my hopes up that's for sure. Fallout 4 runs pretty badly and I don't believe Bethesda will try anything to improve the situation.

I've heard no such thing.

When such a high profile game launches without SLI support, you can bet there are good reasons. The main reason is usually a large time investment required to fix the problems\crashes.

After playing for several hours yesterday on my 860m laptop on high settings at half refresh rate locked to 30 I think I'm going to play at 4k30hz on my main PC. Venturing further into the city nets pathetic performance and stutters/slowdowns becoming the norm. Really hope they eventually sort this out.

I left this game alone for a while hoping it would be patched...guess I was being too hopeful :/

Even Gsync can't hide the framerate plummeting from 100fps to 35 -_-

They're working on it, apparently...

Who knows when it will arrive though. In the meantime, with my 980Ti's I'm using the Arkham City SLI compatibility bits with AFR rendering set to auto and it's not perfect, but it seems to work pretty well from the limited time I've spent with it. No doubt the game needs more optimisation as well.

Hopefully SLI support will be accompanied with better performance for single GPU users as well. Even those with more than enough power to run the game suffer from abysmal performance in certain areas. Have the developers made an official statement regarding this universal issue?

can someone answer this

if you shoot a feral ghouls legs off do they still crawl at you without their legs or do they just stay there

damn if the second one

i thought i saw a vid where they crawl at you but the one im seeing now they just stay

I've had them crawl at me and still attack me. :(

I see everyone here hoping for SLI support, and here I am waiting for crossfire lol

What are your specs?

Try an early save and see if it still happens. First guess is some kind of memory issue that's being could be caused by a number of factors. Most likely on the game's side not meshing well with whatever your setup's software and hardware configuration might be.

Thanks, but since then I've put another 10 hours into the game and it hasn't happened again. I wonder if this is just an issue in the College Square Police Station area. Either that, or the beta patch addressed it.

Same here, near enough. Using DF settings with 750 Ti SC, 5820k and 16GB DDR4 at 1080p. Indoor sections are just not a good experience :s

Might just be me but I'm getting way smoother performance when I turn Windows Aero off. Usually has zero impact on games but it seems to be helping a bit with Fallout. Just thought I'd put that out there.

I forget. Are Bethesda games more cpu or gpu dependent? I have a 960 in the mail, but my cpu is a i5 from 2009.

Not sure about previous entries but Fallout 4 is CPU constrained atm. As in, with the same CPU, you wouldn't see a lot of difference between a 980ti and a 970.

Low Godrays and Medium Shadow Distance solved my problems, but shadow fade in is really noticeable sometimes. I heard there's a huge difference between High and Medium, might considering fiddling with the files to find a sweet spot later.

Hey. What do you know. I am shocked!

But... how well does it work? Any bugs with it? Crashes?

I'll definitely check way later tonight when I get a chance to play.
I'm not really impressed, the one thing it does better is smooths the stuttering, but doesn't eliminate it. I deleted all my custom INI's and I can say that it's smoother for sure, but when you look at the actual SLI profile in NVinspector they didn't change much.

Also, the Volumetric Lighting bug with SLI where it shines through objects is still there.

I'll add some screenshots here in a few minutes

Are you sure it's working at all? I'm using the 359.06 drivers and NVidia Inspector says only one GPU is firing. And I think you could take Manuel's comment to mean, "we have the profile in the driver but the game needs to be patched to use it"

This is exactly what it means.

Are you playing in fullscreen or windowed? Because fullscreen was really the only way I could get decent performance with SLI.

However, the game's FPS will still tank like crazy when there is a CPU bottleneck. SLI can't save that :(

It seems as though official SLI is still going to have the same graphical bugs, so now I'm doubting that the crashing will be eliminated...

Hopefully that's correct, I feel like the kid that just opened a christmas present expecting a Playstation and I got a Saturn.
This happened IRL, it actually worked out ok

Man that bug with the lighting is obnoxious.

Just updated to AMD Crimson Drivers and now that I'm playing Fallout 4 the game is locking to 30fps anytime I'm in a conversation and the game does a closeup of the NPC while they are talking. When the camera comes back to me during the conversation it goes back to 60fps and then goes back to 30 when it cuts back to the NPC...anyone else having this issue?

The issue happened to me at Goodneighbor while I was talking to the singer at the third rail and while talking to Hancock.

I don't know if any else has this same issue as me (I have it in many games).

I've disabled v-sync to get rid of input lag, and then I've limited my framerate in Rivatuner to fix the physics. But whenever my framerate drops below 60 (or whatever I've limited it to) I get massive input lag. Not limiting the framerate gets me constant input lag. It's happened in both MGS V and Far Cry 4 as well, and it's driving me nuts. I basically can't play the game at all.

I finally figured out how to fix the controller map bug from the start menu I selected a higher resolution for windowed and it worked.

Still getting a slight hesitation from to time while playing in and around the outskirts of the city with the new drivers. GPU usage stays the same during this time.

Talking about where you get a 1/4-1/2 second stutter? I have that too if so. It happens when the game loads a new cell. It's pretty annoying.

Roll back for now.
