I have a friend who wants to pre-order a bunch of games on Amazon but he thinks if he uses his Visa Debit card he'll get the overall cost put as a hold on his account. I keep telling him I've ordered plenty of times on Amazon and this has never happened, Amazon just charges you right before each game ships, but he's adamant. Anyone have some clarity?

I've never had the entire amount put on charge before, I think at worst some people have said you'll see a charge/refund in the amount of a few cents to verify your card or something. My experience is exactly like yours...they charge right before each game ships and the charge the price of that individual item and not the order.

Tried to get the 30% on my Twilight Princess order but was told that it would bump it down the pre-order queue and that the 30% was one per person. Eh.
I've used my visa debit card on Amazon plenty of times and I've never had a problem, but I've used Amazon consistently for years now so that might play a role. Conversely, Chapters always does to me what he's afraid will happen to him with Amazon.
Whenever I order from Amazon I get the full amount authorized on my card. The transaction doesn't get posted until ship time. At ship time each game to be shipped will be authorized again and charged the amount of what ships, not the total.
Like right now if I look at my online banking I can see from Amazon the full amount for my order in the authorizations section. The amount isn't calculated in my current balance but it is subtracted from my available credit and will remain so until it expires in a few days without posting.

Amazon never authorizes the full amount for me, ever. Even for the $1500+ E3 order.
They always only do $0 charge to make sure my card is legit.
I have all my credit there. I would never be comfortable with them holding my credit hostage until all my games ship :S (Mastercard)

I was at the Cambie St Best Buy 15 min ago hoping to get lucky. Most of the games are gone as expected. There was a pretty long lineup though. Some of them are buying LG monitors though.

Anyone that ordered the xbox elite controller from the Microsoft store on the 18th/19th get a tracking number yet?
Pretty much everything has been said, but about the shipping reliability of amazon, it all depends on where you are.
I'm super close to Montreal and ALWAYS get my games on day one (paying 15$ per order for express shipping). Best Buy on the other hand is almost everytime a day late.
Amazon never charged me before shipping. I guess it depends on your credit card and credit history.
Gotcha. I'm in downtown TO. Hopeful I should be ok. Poor CS + inability to modify and cancel orders easily is a deal breaker for me - like seriously, fuck the old Future Shop site, and if BB is similar, fuck that too - so I think it has to be Amazon. The BF has Prime too, so yay.

You can make a new order of those four, and that will have 30% off, as long as it's more than two to the order. Or you can add them and it'll be 30% as well, just in case you might cancel more than two of them!

I know my CC will expire in May next year and I heard the horror stories about trying to update payment on preorders, so I was planning to use paypal for this order (I have E3 2014 and E3 2013 orders I guess I'll have to deal with, sadly). Since I have funds on my paypal account, do preorders work the same way as with a CC with the charge only happening on the day the games ship?
Second question... I have Xenoblade preordered from Best Buy but I'm in Quebec... I ordered it before the shipping restrictions on it were instated. Will I have trouble in the next couple of days? Thinking about making a backup order with Amazon, but even with 30% off it'll be more expensive than my initial BB order.

I was offered a free replacement for mine, and the lady was nice enough to set it so that it'll be sent out to me as opposed to having to deal with the whole return shipping thing. However, although she said 3-5 days, they haven't had stock and haven't sent anything.

I actually just contacted customer service and they added the discount manually. These 4 games don't seem to get the discount automatically, at least on PC.
I tried to price match with this too, but no luck. Worth a try at least.
Depends? Are you making payments every month? Do you pay off the card in full or is the CC company racking in hundreds of dollars in interest charges off you? If the latter than they probably will keep hiking you limit to get you to spend more until you break. Basically, comes down to whether or not you have a job that can pay off everything. If you have money in the bank and can afford to pay back the card, you're obviously fine. Miss a payment though and your Credit Score will take a hit.
Oh weird, just checked, the PC versions didn't count for those. It's good you got it, then!

both console ces worked and they are non-searchable been like this for weeks. PC does not though had to get mine from best buy.

Yeah, that was me, and they weren't willing to do anything for me even though the game hadn't physically shipped yet (it was a Sunday). I got lucky and the people actually sent it back but Best Buy basically told me 'too bad'. Even though it was their error in the first place (I was on the phone with them updating my CC info and address, the guy changed my CC number first and it automatically charged me and "shipped" the order when he did).

So I took your advice and tried to price match my TP Wii U order to get it to $70 base. It didn't work.
BUT
The CSR was AWESOME. She gave me a $20 promotion credit to make up for the price difference. So there I was with $20 credit just asking to be used.
so I asked her about Overwatch's PC collectors edition not being part of the 30% off sale. I showed her the link to the PS4 version which had the blurb about the sale at the bottom. After reading it she asked me if I could place the order. I placed the order for Overwatch, but forgot to add a second item to the order and was in the middle of writing out that I needed to place a second order for the promotion to be valid (yes, I was actually doing this because I did actually want to add Resident Evil 0 and 1 for the PS4 to the order), but she still did the 30% off discount and the base price for the CE dropped to $118.30. The $20 promo from TP kicked in, so the adjusted price before taxes was $98.30 giving me a grand total of $111.08 after all was said and done. I also did the order with my ebates link so I'm hoping that I'll get some cashback on it too.
I then noticed that my e3 order of final fantasy VII PS4 remake lost the promo discount (i assume because I had cancelled an order without realizing that it would affect it), so I asked her if she could fix it for me. She had to manually change the price, and ended up changing it a bit too much. It went from 79.99 to 39.02.
This is why I don't really mind if amazon.ca ships things to me late. I can live with it as long as stuff like this keeps happening lol
edit: jeebus, I just noticed another of my e3 orders lost its 30% off discount, this time for doom and star ocean. what in the world?

So I now only have one Futureshop preorder left, Final Fantasy XV @ 39.99.
Everything else I've moved over to amazon. Even if a few them are a few dollars more in the end, I'm counting on a pricedrop to make up for the difference, or simply the time saved when wanting to cancel an individual game.
I think I cancel/return 3/5 games that I preorder during these deals, so amazon's system would save me a lot of time. Totally worth the extra $2-5 for certain games.
Also cancelled my Rise of the Tomb Raider preorder for PS4 that I got while they hadn't announced timed exclusivity yet.
Everything else I've moved over to amazon. Even if a few them are a few dollars more in the end, I'm counting on a pricedrop to make up for the difference, or simply the time saved when wanting to cancel an individual game.
