Fan Favorite PS2 Games Launching on PS4 Tomorrow

Au contraire:

Everything's remastered to conform with current PS4 standards, which is really impressive.
As an example: you want to make a GTA SA montage? You can spend $100 on a capture card, or $15 on the PS4 remaster to use the share button + sharefactory.

Refer to the above. These PS2-PS4 remasters offer more than sufficient value for their prices.

What you are quoting doesn't actually support your claim.

The resolution increase is a product of the emulator, not remastering and the PS4 UI features are just that, features of the UI, not anything to do with the games themselves. All PS4 games have those features by default unless specifically restricted. The only thing that required any extra work is the trophies and the Sony patent indicates that this was probably something incredibly minor and certainly from the consumer perspective, not grounds for a 50% premium.

For people who don't own the games, this seems like a good deal. But, I already own the only game on that list I want which is rogue galaxy and I still have my Ps2 hooked up.

I have a feeling this might be something line the virtual console in which a lot of obscure or niche titles, or titles by defunct developers, won't appear.

And I feel like this won't be supported by third party developers at all. At least not in the long term.

If you go back in this thread a bit... There is a bunch of ppl complaing about $15 for a ps2 game.

Yeah, which I think while the pricing is a bit on the high side, it's not too much of a deal breaker, you can always wait for a sale etc, I'm done purchasing digital "classic" games though, the past would suggest they're carrying forward, but if they no-longer do, i'm no-longer interested.

What are xbox 1 games priced at on XB1? Or Gamecube games on Wii-u?

Oh wait..

Not sure what that argument is trying to achieve... I could just say what are PS3 games priced at on PS4?

I don't particularly mind the price. It's the lack of compatibility with previous Classic purchases. Heck not even a steep discount which I think would be bad in itself. But we get nothing.

Exactly this. This is the most worrying part. They can charge whatever price they want since I don't have to buy it and it'll probably go on sale. But by not bringing the compatibility over from past purchases though this severely lowers my confidence in buying anything from their digital marketplace.

This is pretty much what I was trying to say. Sony views these as rereleases rather than simply dumping the PS2 classics onto PS4. In their mind I'm sure it's justified. Clearly consumers disagree.

Some do. I don't mind it. Doesn't mean I'll go out and buy all of them but for the occasional purchase of a game I love, or a classic game I missed, it's fine.

Not having a discount for those who already have the digital license is a punch in the face.

But i don't consider $15 expensive. You aren't getting good the same game again and this are some great games. For the same price that you can buy an AAA launch game you can get 4 great games that are updated to today standards.

And people should connect their ps2s to their new HD tvs to see how beautiful the graphics are.

Pricing at least seems in line with PS2 classics pricing, but the lack of incentives for purchasers of PS2 classic versions of these games is seriously shitty. Glad I never invested in PS2 classics in any real way. I'll still be hacked off if there's a PS4 port of Suikoden 3 though.

Why did they even use the word 'emulation' regarding this scheme when they're clearly ports rather than emulated software? Sigh...

People really upset about the 15 dollar price tag? What? I can understand if you already bought it on the PS3, but on its own with a bunch of features available through the PS4 and resolution bump 15 is perfectly acceptable.

You people be trippen.

We dont know yet if consumers disagree. I don't.
Cheaper would be better of course, but there will be sales for that.

Hopefully we get a nice batch every month.

I'm pretty excited about this. Really can't understand why people need to complain that they don't get something for free because they've bought the game years ago.

15$ is a fair price, there's money that went into developing the emulator, possibly re-compiling the game, adding trophies, etc. If you think it's too much, simply wait for one of the (inevitable) sales, you don't need to get everything on day 1.

I'm really happy about this, haven't played Rogue Galaxy yet, so I'll pick it up tomorrow, possibly alongside Dark Cloud. I hope we will see a lot more PS2 releases on PS4 with trophy support... :)

I'll be honest, I was never expecting my PS3 purchases to be worth a damn on the PS4, so I guess I'm not too surprised. Though it's funny to think how Nintendo of all companies did a better job with their VC than Sony, at least as far as offering a reasonable "upgrade" path to people who already bought said games on the Wii.

Main reason I even wanted this to happen was for Atlus PS2 games and some other less known titles, so I'll probably be waiting a long time before the service even becomes useful for me anyway. Though I'll consider picking up Rogue Galaxy once there's a sale.

I guess people are conflating "Remaster" (a marketing term), with "Port" and "Emulation" (technical terms).

These are digital copies of original PS2 discs, being emulated. The emulator is providing enhancements, and they have added trophies.

$15 is a fair price and I will be happy to pay it. A lot of work has gone into these games so the price is fine for me.

It is true that, worst case scenario, a ton of these will be <$3 every now and then during flash sales in the future.

Still bummed that I bought the Contra Shattered Soldier PS2 classic hoping to use it soon though :( Stupid :(

But those upgrades are minimal. It's an up-res (that emulators on PC already do) and Trophys. It isn't a different game, at all.

They don't offer an upgrade path (not that I think you should pay more but well, at least an upgrade path), they don't offer the option to just play the games as they were and that you already bought.

They are selling it as "PS2 games on the PS4" I agree. But I think most people just wanted an emulator like Microsoft has for the X1 and not this. This is not BC, it's just reselling old games with minimal work for a premium price.

But I agree with what you are saying, I just think this is the totally the wrong way to go about it.

They aren't selling it as BC anymore than rereleasing Last of Us or Uncharted on ps4 is an attempt at PS3 bc. These are probably going to just be select releases, not a full scale answer for bc because, to be quite honest, they don't need it. These aren't targeted at people who still have their ps2's hooked up, or still have a collection of physical ps2 games. This is not meant as a solution for you. It's for people who haven't played a ps2 in 15 years but have fond memories, or someone who was too young to play it at the time but wants to see what all the fuss was about. With that audience, despite all the message board/twitter rage, I think the program will do well.

What I would really like to know is the frequency of these releases, and I we are getting them with PS+.

If we were to get a handful each month with 1 chosen as the free game I would dig it.

Those prices -- wow.

It would have been nice to have the option to play these games without trophies and updated visuals for free if you already own them.

I don't get this argument. Like, things aren't that linear. Just because they spent money on that doesn't mean it isn't anti-consumer to past all of those costs to them (plus their profit).

Microsoft developed an emulator too, they offered it for free. Because it created goodwill and value for the platform. Because there's more ways to make money than "now pay for this games again".

Everything a company does costs money, and there are ways to be pro-consumer about it and anti-consumer about. This is the latter.

On top of it all there isn't even an upgrade path if you already owned the games, creating ill-will with your consumers. Not a great move.

The way you phrase it makes me wish they had just released an emulator app.

I'm not "upset" about it, but at that price I will absolutely not be buying any of them and I can see why others won't too. It's simply too high. You can get the PS2 GTA Trilogy for dramatically cheaper than that elsewhere right now. Hell, you can still get them brand new as a set at Walmart for way less than that.

When Sony's main competitor is rolling out a program that let's you bring forward games at no additional price, and even let's you use your original discs to access them, then as a consumer you kind of have a place to sit here and ask why you should be paying for this. Especially people who owned PS2 classics, there is zero excuse for that.

This is so dope. So many great PS2 games I never really got the chance to play. I'm friggin stoked to see these coming to the Playstation Store. Rogue Galaxy seems like it's totally worth $15

Pretty much. I do think it's shit that there's no sort of $5 upgrade fee you can pay if you already own them on PS3, but that's my only real complaint. $15 I think is really pushing it for some titles, but we'll see what happens there. They can get away with that for the GTA games and some more niche stuff/RPGs where those games can be hard to find or cost way more physically (say Dark Cloud 1/2, Rogue Galaxy etc) but it's a fine line. I'm totally fine with $15 for Rogue Galaxy for example.

People need to stop using the MS comparison; Sony is going back TWO generations with this, it's not an apples to apples comparison. Unless they're doing OG Xbox disc-based BC and I missed that news or something.

I don't have a PS2 plugged in. Actually, I'm exactly the target audience. There's a bunch of PS2 games I would love to play that never did. And this doesn't sit right with me and I still think it's a bad move.

And, as a consumer, knowing they did it this way doesn't inspire confidence that they won't just do it again.

I think it's a bad implementation despite it affecting me deeply or not.

great post

also you can play gamecube games on a softmodded Wii U and it's great

Thanks.

This isn't about modding and PC emulators. If that is what you want, you can keep doing that.

It seems like so many just wanted free options, I imagine the same outrage if they were priced at $10.

PS3 is last gen, this is 2 gens ago.

If Gamecube and Xbox games were available on those platforms, I am convinced they would have the same price point.
