The first gif u can see the command bar greying out on each swing. Considering defend is a command that means you lose the ability to defend during attack, so no cancelling attacks into anything. The second gif they have a full bar and use a super, but it doesnt consume the bar, not once did I see the bar being consumed once a super was used. Now it could be a timing thing with the video cutting off before then, but its odd.

Yeah I guess so. I first thought it could be "inverse ATB", you can hit until it's full and goes red (to cooldown).

I know ATB doesn't mean that, but I can't say it better.
based on these gifs, this actually seems somewhat plausible

Shopkeeper: [Homer has agreed to purchase a Krusty doll for Bart's birthday] Take this object, but beware it carries a terrible curse!

Homer: Ooh, that's bad.

Shopkeeper: But it comes with a free frogurt!

Homer: That's good.

Shopkeeper: The frogurt is also cursed.

Homer: That's bad.

Shopkeeper: But you get your choice of toppings.

Homer: That's good!

Shopkeeper: The toppings contain potassium benzoate.

[Homer looks puzzled]

Shopkeeper: ...That's bad.

Homer: Can I go now?

OMG looks amazing....

:)

...but those Barret glasses....

:(

...but those graphics!!...

:)

...but that AC Cloud...

:(

...but that combat system!!

:)

...but is real-time....

:/

I'm so conflicted.

People were expecting 20-year old turn based combat? It's a remake for a reason, and not using advancements in gameplay and technology would be missing the point entirely.

I think it looks fantastic so far.

For people who want a more "faithful" FFVII HD remake, I still think Square Enix should have done something like Pillars of Eternity where they still have the old camera angle and pre-rendered backgrounds but in modern resolutions.

nobody was expecting that. turn based combat has come along way in 20 years as well

Looks like a bunch of other "cinematic" games out these days. I think people see the Final Fantasy VII name lose all sense of objectivity.
FFVII's intro Midgar section was always very cinematic & extremely linear, so what's the problem with this showing a cinematic intro as well?

So... Action RPG?...

If I wanted to play ARPG I would play KH3 or FF15...

-you guys will hype for the game
-the reviews will give great scores
-game will be released first in Japan,
-japanese player will say how this games sucks
-non-japanese players will not believe and say how japanese playes have a bad taste
-game will be released worldwide
-first 3 hours is amazing and people will spread the love through internet boards
-people will finish the game and realize how shit this is

Oh... FF13 memories...

i'm so suprised they released gameplay footage so early. must be a vertical slice
the game looks great! the atmosphere , midgar, nostalgia.. the music... the red scorpion... so much memories.... aaaaaaawesome.. but the wedge voice acting is so bad, barret looks so weird and different from AC, and i am not a very big fan of this style of combat :( im so conflicted too. i hope its coming on PC on release date!

Wat? If anything this game will release WW at the same time, they already casted the voices.

The polarizing response to the combat system is why Nomura & co. would never be able to satisfy everyone.

Personally, I think it looks amazing.

You might actually be right.
If that's the case I guess character switching would be really important and it would create a sort of economy of action in the battle system that would make you think before you act.

To be quite honest, I thought it had aged poorly. 100% cheevo'd the Steam version.

And just for a yardstick comparison w.r.t. my opinion on things, also 100% cheevo'd Grandia 2 when the Steam version released and THAT one aged really well, OP final moves aside.

I would have easily taken Grandia's battle system.

Looks great. Glad they updated the battle system. If I want a turn based RPG I can just grab the PC port.

Sorry to single out this post, but why are so many people saying "updated" "modernized" "brought into the year 2015"

They changed the combat entirely. It's a new system. It's a new type of game.

It looks completely like an appropriate remake visually and you're right, not using technological advancements would be silly.

Action based combat however is not a 1:1 advancement of ATB combat. ATB is still completely fine as it always was.

But removing turn-based combat isn't an advancement....

They lost me when the combat started. I should've known better than to expect they would respect the turn-based gameplay of the original. If I wanted FFXV I'd play that. Remake doesn't mean re-envision the core mechanics of the game. Well have fun, ARPG fans.
I am so glad that I was born to be the exact opposite of u in this regard

I fucking told you brandon! I told you the first gameplay trailer would be the opening section with The Bombing Mission playing!

I TOOOOOOOLD YOOOOOOOU!
Jollystradamus!!!

Why do you suggest that only action-based combat has improved in the past twenty years? There are tons of turn based games released over the decades and plenty of them have battle systems that are distinct from the next. Turn base can evolve just like non-turn base.

I rarely become overhyped to the point of irrationality, but I will fight anyone who doesn't view this objectively as the best game of all time. Come at me, bros!
