2016+ Gaming Laptop Thread: Embracing Pascal's Wafer (Please Read OP)

Hmm. How do Sager laptops tend to stack up vs MSI? I'm still on the hook for the GT72S-004, but at this point it's on into December and the seller apparently still hasn't even gotten the parts. I'm starting to feel like by the time they ship the thing I'm literally already going to have been able to find something to top it at the same price.

(Hell, if they can't get the thing out by mid-December, I'd practically rather wait for the first round of Pascal laptops...)

I figure this is a good thread to ask this. I recently bought an MSI Laptop and a SSD drive. When the laptop arrives I plan on immediately swapping out the HDD with the SSD. Will I be able install Windows 10 from a USB drive on the SSD directly?

I'd just set your windows up on the new laptop initially, then use a migration tool to image it to the SSD. Windows 10 key is attached to your Microsoft account but you'll have to activate Windows first. Also, will the laptop have a recovery partition (why do they always have recovery partitions?) if so, maybe burn recovery media before you install the SSD.

I'll likely take this course of action. Thanks!

I know the S3 isn't a gaming laptop, especially my atom version, but I was hoping I could still get some guidance.

From above I have the S3 and so far it has been great. I am able to play South Park Stick of Truth and some other older RPGs (Ys / TitS). My question is around temps I am hitting. Obviously because it is a fanless enclosed processor it will constantly be generating heat. Is there a way to not let it hit the max turbo clock for an atom processor, or limit it from 2.4 to 2 or 2.1? This will bug me sometime I guess and longevity.

Just for a baseline I was able to play SPSofT for ~1.5 hours and hit 75 degrees as a max by the end with one spike to 81. Again I know the limitations of this type of system, I am just trying to mitigate some of the heat and know of no other place to ask, tried Reddit and others, but Gaf seems to be a better hive mind for these types of questions related to gaming. Thanks in advance!

Windows 10 or 7? I heard 10 has a lot of issues like Vista. Should i just stick with 7?
These are my opinions:
If you already have 7, stick with 7 for now, unless you really want the upgrade.
If you have 8.1, upgrade to 10 asap.
If you have a choice of OS for a new laptop (everything else being equal), go with Windows 10.

Also be wary that some older laptops may not have driver support for Windows 10.

Try ThrottleStop. Note that ThrottleStop will prevent throttling the CPU if it overheats, so be aware of the risks and keep an eye on your temperatures.

Edit: Corrected by the author of ThrottleStop himself. It's a great tool, well done.

Sounds like I can under volt or limit the ghz this way, but removes the safety net that if I exceed the operating threshold I will still cause myself worse issues. I wonder if I could accomplish it somehow though although really any dye des playtime will result in the doc overheating I guess, unless the game is really old.

Note that ThrottleStop will prevent throttling the CPU if it overheats...

That is not true. Intel CPUs protect themselves from damage at the hardware level. No matter how you have ThrottleStop setup, the CPU will still throttle if it is too hot and it actually needs to throttle. The purpose of ThrottleStop is to prevent unnecessary throttling that some laptop and tablet manufacturers have dreamed up. It does not solve every problem but it has made a dramatic difference for some owners with Atom CPUs.

Edit - Contact the author (me) or head to Notebook Review if you need ThrottleStop 8.00. NeoGAF likes to hide helpful download links from their members.

Just got back from the US.

I can't wait to get back to my house, lol.
Fake edit: wrong links. Im on mobile too hard and no battery left to fix it.

edit2: fixed. Also, does anyone know how to scroll with the GT72 touchpad or there is no way of scrolling with the touchpad?

edit3: This is madness. Complete madness.

So while on the US I checked everything worked alright, I didn't have an internet connection so I made a local account and whatever. I set my keyboard language to US - International, so I could use alt+n for ñ, and alt+a for á, etc.

Then now at home I wanted to have my Windows in spanish too, since that is what I'm used to, changed a few settings and I had to reboot. I reboot my laptop, and suddenly I couldn't log in because of wrong password.

I wrote my password every different way I could, you know. With typos, with lowercase, uppercase, then I tried writing it as it would be with the old keyboard layout, and no success.

Nearly one hour before, I was about to reinstall windows, but suddenly I remember that I read about the MSI Recovery Tool.
And now I'm back to square one, as if I just opened for the first time my laptop.

I guess there was no harm done, since I didn't lose anything because I still didn't have anything. But, wow, so scary.

The thing that makes it even more weird is that I did login here, so I did have my password right a few hours ago. I don't get what happened, I'm just glad everything is okay.

So what is the best laptop I can get for <1000$?

This dell seems alright.

Anything better I can get for that price?

They also sell it on Amazon for the same price.

Seems like a solid machine, comparable to the Lenovo Y700 and Acer Nitro.

I'm actually debating between the Dell and the Alienware 15R2 (most likely going with the Alienware because of the construction/build quality).

Sagers are really solid.

There is a GT72 coming with the GTX 980 as well though.
Hi Kjack,

Yes i'm still here :/ Should i get the laptop from the main site or one of their vendors?
I'd just buy directly from Sager.

Oh man

I literally paced back and forth a few times over this particular laptop model during black friday week (and lurking in here like crazy). I looked everywhere, but I couldn't seem to find a concrete answer about whether or not those Dells also included IPS panels. They had everything I wanted (skylake, dual back vents and a 4GB 960M), but I felt like anything less than an IPS panel (never watched one in the flesh whatsoever) was a no go. Oh well, maybe next year will be the time.

Hey folks, I have an oldish (2/3 years) Medion laptop with an i7-3630QM and a 670mx that I got for cheap. I'm still mostly satisfied with the specs but I'm looking to upgrade and get one of these new portable, durable and aesthetically pleasing multimedia/gaming pcs.

Fact is, I didn't realise that my processor was almost overpowered for the time. I know that I shouldn't read too much into clock speeds since these are newer architectures, but how much of a downgrade would it be if I got a Skylake i5 quad core or low voltage i7?

Both are downgrades, for different reasons.

Skylake i5 = quad but no Hyperthreading

ULV i7 = weak dual core

despite having less computing power, note that both CPUs are upgrades in terms of efficiency (less heat, more battery life).

But yeah a full CPU upgrade would be a proper skylake i7-6700HQ at least, and the lack of hyperthreading in an i5-6300HQ isn't that big of a downgrade compared to a ULV.

What's the difference between the Anniversary Edition and the new GT72 Pro-G with the GTX980, aside from form factor? At a glance, the latter seems like a more expensive pricetag on essentially the same machine.

I think if I do drop my current order I'd probably switch to a Sager, since I can at least order from them direct. I'm somewhat put off on ordering through a reseller like Xotic at this point.

Only difference I see, is that the one has the dragons all over it.

If going MSI, I'd just buy from Amazon or Newegg.

The 1080p model has an IPS screen but the colors are really bad from what I hear. The UHD model has a much better panel from LG but it could be brighter (I currently have this version).

I have restricted my search and I'm currently looking at a Gigabyte P35K v3 (i7-4720HQ, gtx 965m). Only thing that worries me is CPU temp under serious loads, I've read conflicting reports on it - even up to 97°C! Anyone with a Gigabyte willing to chime in?

The ASUS K501UX doesn't look to bad for what I'm trying to get. I'm also looking at the 15" Dell Inspiron 7000. The Asus is a bit cheaper, comes with an i7, and only has a slightly weaker GPU. Gaming isn't the primary thing I'm looking for in a laptop so a 950M is probably enough if it isn't already overkill.

I just realized Intel older 5700hq is a better performer than the newer 6700hq! 5700hq turbos higher and for all 4 cores. Battery life also seem close enough. Why Intel?

Hi Kjack.

Lol.. Would the NP9870-S NOTEBOOK be upgrade able? for future graphics cards, cpu, and etc.

That I'm actually going to have to look into.

Hey, so I'm needing a laptop with me to take to school starting in January and was wondering how good of a deal this one was?

http://www.xoticpc.com/force-msi-1781-221045-980m-msi-gt72-barebones-p-8111.html

I built my own pc a while back, but it's been so long that I'm out of the loop on pricing and such.

To clarify: I was wanting something that could game for the next couple of years.

Impossible to call a 980M at that price a bad deal.

What price are you seeing for that laptop?

MSI GE62 may be a better route.

Always thinking to the future, even with gaming as a side priority, I'd still take the machine which has GDDR5 VRAM. The GTX 960M is literally a desktop GTX 750 Ti.

The 950M isn't overkill for any level of gaming, not even last gen.

I think the priority with Skylake was to get the energy consumption and heat down, performance be damned.

Skylake will hold its boost clocks longer, as a result.

Well I'm leaning more back towards the Dell because the i7 in that Asus is actually a dual core. Aside from that though, the most demanding games I would ever even think about running list "8800GT" in the reccommended system requirements. An exception might be Pillars of Eternity or Original Sin. CRPGs mostly.

Yeah I forgot to mention the CPU being a dual core.

So $70 more gets you a quad core and a much more powerful GPU, significantly longer longevity. Seems like a no brainer to me.

fuck reading this thread makes me really want to wait for Pascal, but I really can't wait 6 to 8 more months for a new laptop -_-

Thanks for the reply back. And yeah the 980M looked like quite a jump from my 7850, but is there any apparent reason for the cheap price tag? CPU and RAM seems fine from what I can tell.

Well it's an unbranded, barebones MSI GT72, and lacks the branded amenities (Dynaudio speakers, Steelseries keyboard) that drive up the price of that machine.

Yeah and I don't think any of those are necessarily deal breakers for me, but was mostly worried if I could get something better around my price point ($1500, with maybe a little wiggle room).

Thanks again for answering me on here. I'm really trying to make sure I have something that lasts me through grad school lol

Next cheapest routes to a 980M are $1800+, so I'd prioritize getting the GPU, and spend the rest of the budget on an SSD.

Country: Canada
Maximum budget: Under $500 ideally, but would also like to see what options there are up to $1000.
Max size: 13"-15" but smaller is better.
Planned usage: Adobe CC while at school.
Misc: I'd really like something that's durable because of previous series of incidents involving complete laptop death from drops.

First time poster here so sorry if this question/situation has been answered or comes across as wordy.

So I've recently moved back to windows from linux on my 2+ year old laptop to get into PC gaming. The hardware specs are the following:

specs said:
Quad-Core Intel® Core™ i5-3230M CPU @ 2.60GHz
7.7 GiB of RAM
Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)

Been playing a few games on steam (mostly KOF XIII along with few other fighting games) and while my specs have been able to run the games well there has been SOME slowdown when put on high settings for KOF XIII.

I was thinking of upgrading only the graphics card as the rest of the system seems to be in good runnings tech wise (I could be wrong tho) is it possible to upgrade a graphics card for a laptop and if so how would I buy it and where?

I'm in Japan and while products such as 860M/960M come up in my research I have no clue on where to buy and if I can just upgrade the graphics card in my current laptop.

TL;DR: Want to upgrade the graphics card on my laptop but don't know if possible. 860M ok/cheap? How do I find one to buy?

Okay so I'm having a super expensive laptop bought for me and I'm thinking of going with this:

TOSHIBA Qosmio X70-B-112 17.3" Gaming Laptop - Graphite Silver
Intel® Core™ i7-4720HQ processor
Memory: 16 GB
Graphics: AMD Radeon R9 M365X
Storage: 1 TB SSHD

Or there's an MSI one I'm looking at that has a better processor (Intel® Core™ i7-5700HQ Processor) and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970M. Other specs are the same.

Both are roughly the same price. Which do you guys think is better?

So I just bought a Dell XPS 15. I've literally never owned a laptop (or a computer at all) that was even remotely this capable (went from cheapo Walmart laptops to a Macbook Air to this). Do I need to update drivers or anything before I try out a couple games, or should it be good to go out of the box?

Canada is like the worst country in the world, to expect a decent deal on a laptop, I'm sorry to say.

Do you need a dGPU for that work?

No your laptop is not able to upgrade.

A 860M/960M laptop would be your best bet.

Country: usa
Maximum budget: under $1250
Max size: 13"-15"
Planned usage: Gaming / Photoshop / work stuff
If you want lower than 15", you'll need to stretch your budget a bit.

Can I use my gaming laptop as a monitor for my PS4/XB1? I'm using a MSI GT72.

Nope not natively, you'd need HDMI-IN for that. I hear there are capture card like devices which allow it, but there may be input lag.

Outside of updating to the latest Nvidia driver, yeah, it should be fine out of the box.

Gaming laptops are a little weird due to Nvidia Optimus, which only enables the GPU for games and uses integrated graphics for everything else. For some games you need to right click, Nvidia Control Panel, manually add games and make them use the High Performance Graphics Processor, else their framerates will be poor.

This can be the case frequently with newer stuff I've noticed. I wondered why Shadow Complex performed like hot trash until I realized I needed to go into Control Panel and tell it to use nVidia rather than Integrated.

And it's not flawless, given that some games like Trails in the Sky are stubborn about being used (or the computer's daft and fails to pick up on that game being, well, a GAME.) Good thing that one hardly needs a powerful system, but it's still frustrating because what could be mostly great performance could easily become completely great, even on a lower end GPU.

Manual GPU switching, meaning no Optimus, was one of the big reasons I chose the GT72.

I'm never going back to that hassle.
