21:9 Gaming Thread | That cinematic feel

just ordered an LG 25-inch 1080p 21:9 on a whim because it was in an amazon time sale. (i really ought to stop checking that page.)

hoping it won't seem too much smaller than the 24-inch 16:10 1920 x 1200 dell i use right now, but given that the next step up is 29-inch at the exact same resolution i think i'd rather have the extra pixel density for $120 less.

anyway, seemed like a good way to dip my toes into the whole 21:9 thing. if i like it i'll go 34 next time when the market's a bit more mature!

okay, after a few hours of playing, i can confirm that this thing is the shit, especially for $200. great colour reproduction, and the perfect size for my desk. the stand is a little low, though (i am tall), so i think i'll find something to prop it up on.

i usually play most new games on console when available, but this is going to make the choice more difficult. everything looks so much better! it's a real differentiator for PC, since i don't think 21:9 TVs are ever going to be a thing.

Anyone using the freesync LG with an nvidia card? The price difference is insane for a gsync equiv. The freesync one is 200.

Nope, but it would just like if you buy the same spec monitor without freesync / gsnyc since you won't be able to take advantage of it.

Did you get the LG 29UB55-B? That's the one I ordered and it just arrived today. I'm in love. <3

EDIT: Oh wait, you said 25 inch. Well they're pretty close to identical people told me. Either way it's amazing.

Thanks for responding to my question. If it's easy for individuals to notice the pixels on the 35" monitor. Why would Acer create a monitor of this size? It is a bit strange for companies to spend a lot of money in producing something that has this type of a problem. I think I am going to wait for the reviews of this monitor before I decide to purchase one.

The reason why I want this monitor is because of the two hundred hertz. I play some shooting games (CS:GO mostly), and I think that having access to higher hertz will enhance my experience when playing it. In addition to that, the 21:9 aspect ratio will also allow me to see more than the individuals that are using 16:9, 16:10, and 4:3 aspect ratios. There are other reasons why, but these are the ones that are pretty important to me.

eh

if you at all serious about csgo, then get higher hz

if you play a variety of games get a x34

I jumped rog swift to x34 and i haven't looked back.

How is going from 1080p to 2560 x 1080 performance wise? I have 980m and I'm really tempted to get an ultra wide screen.

Does laptop G-sync work on an external monitor btw?

I was using a 1080p Asus before getting the new monitor. Running a 4th generation i5 (4460 3.2 GHz) with the Geforce GTX 960 2GB. The performance impact is noticeable (5-10 FPS depending on the game), but not usually significant. I'm still getting a stable 30 FPS on The Witcher 3 at relatively high settings for example.

Just got the X34 I ordered from Amazon. It was packed very well, they double boxed it. October build date

No problems hitting 100 Hz. Also, I don't hear any coil whine on an all white screen. Uniformity is also very good, just like my LG, no color tint like I had on the PG279Q.

I'm super happy with this monitor so far - can't find any faults :) There's a little BLB on my unit but no worse than other IPS panels I've owned really.

That sounds delicious.. But why did you get 29UB55-B instead of 29UM67? The difference is like 10 bucks.

They're in-stock now?

I'm super jealous. I want one. I'm just finding it hard to pull the trigger when I dropped $800 for the U3415W 5 months ago, and the Acer is just 40mz more + gsync.

That said, I have the same keyboard and mouse as you. So something tells me I should go ahead and get the monitor. That makes sense. Right?

I picked one up too from my local MicroCenter.

It's such a huge difference from my 27" 1440P non gsync at 60hz. I thought I was gonna tell the difference, but playing some some shooters I could tell really fast, it's pretty awesome. Plus, that 34" ultra wide aspect is just too good!

I say go for it :P I was planning on keeping my LG UM95 longer but after seeing how great Gsync + high refresh rate is I had to upgrade. I'm really just blown away, going to put the LG up on eBay tomorrow.

Though I didn't realize the Dell could overclock, that's interesting, my LG wouldn't budge past 60 when I tried (it did apply the refresh rate but skipped frames).

And ya - Amazon did have stock a few days ago, looks like only a third party seller has stock right now though. I'd recommend using Nowinstock.net to get a notication when they restock.

.

The Dell overclocks but it skips frames to do it. Maybe it's an SLI thing (though I doubt it) but when I actually use the 80hz resolution, it feels choppy. When I go back to 60 it's all smooth again. And that's in Battlefield 4 where I used to get 120hz on my overclocked QNIX, so its not like I can't keep up with the 80.

Maybe I have a bad panel but 60 is my limit.

The 29UM67 was more expensive at the time (over $300 on Newegg and Amazon), I had a hard limit in regards to price, and I couldn't wait for it to drop back down.

Has anyone who ordered an Acer Predator Z35 received any clarifications about expected delivery date? I have an order that slipped from the end of november to mid-december according to the product page on my online retailer, but I have not gotten any personal communications about the delay. Is mid-december going to happen with the Z35, or are we looking at an early 2016 release at this point?

Does anyone have a 34" ultrawide + secondary 4k monitor setup? I'm thinking about getting the LG 27mu for coding, but can't figure how to get it to fit on my desk with my LG34

Well, it's not even on Amazon yet. I think it is either going to be late December, or early 2016.

This thread is like porn for me. I don't have a 21:9, I just like looking at pictures...

Maybe it's because I upgraded from an old 2008 TN panel to an IPS monitor, but there was a huge difference between looking at one, and actually seeing it first hand. Still getting games here and there that make me go "Woah" whenever I see them in the widescreen aspect.

What do you guys consider acceptable backlight bleed?

I think I might exchange my monitor today, seems to be more than I'd like, but maybe I'm just paranoid.

OLED computer display seems great, but I wonder if those LG displays will have gsync (probably not, right?). It would be a great choice for my work/web home computer, but in that category I am strongly considering this VA display.

Has OLED screens gotten past burn in/degradation issues btw?

LG claims to have solved both of the problems. I don't think the first models will have gsync since it's new technology. It is exciting news though.

Trying to figure out if the monitor would fit in my custom desk.

Just noticed semi-news about the Z35 on tftcentral:

So, if they are getting it for review very soon, I guess that increases the likelihood of a december release.

For the longest time I've wanted an ultra wide monitor. I've been waiting for the right time to purchase it, if only it wasn't $1,300 bucks (predator x34). For the time being I'm using a 144hz monitor. Only game I play at 144hz is CSGO. However, for some reason CSGO limits the FPS to 60 when someone is watching you via Steam. I can see the difference between 144fps and 60fps. I am by no means competitive. I'm okay at the game. However, I don't know if I can redeem myself and go back to 60fps. Is it too late for me? Has anyone went from 144hz to ultra wide 60fps? I still want the monitor no question about it. I'm just rambling really but I'd like feedback. 144fos is just so smooth. 60fps gives the games this weird 3D effect and it is choppy. Kind of like enabling MotionFlow on a Sony Bravia TV.

i just went from a 144hz gsync to 75hz lg 21:9, doesnt bother me much but i rarely play a shooter

Same , i'm thinking of waiting for their the Rog Swift PG348 or waiting until a DP 1.3 Ultrawide comes out. By that time the Acer's price should be a bit more reasonable with most of its issues ironed out.

I wonder if anyone here could help me with this question.

My laptop has Intel Graphics 3000 and a GT540M. Would it be able to run a LG 25UM57-P (2560x1080) at 60hz?

I'm not buying this for gaming with that sort of GPU, and its primary use will be for coding, writing, multitasking (and to generally overcompensate for having to do all three of those things with a 1366x768 display for the last 12 months).

With LG, I think it's most likely they'll have Freesync considering their current offerings and uses an open standard.

It'll drive it, yes. But it won't game on it at any serious settings.

I've been searching for a monitor that works great in games, movies and other computer tasks and I am actually quite impressed by 21:9. as far as gaming is concerned

Unfortunately,a 21:9 monitor is best for gaming exclusively as i see it atm,so I am aiming to buy a 16:9 or 16:10.Glad to see it there as an option though !

I don't know, having more horizontal real estate helps me with work as I can split the screen down the middle and have enough room to work without having to use a dual monitor setup anymore.

If you're actually watching DVDs or Blu-Rays, 21:9 is fantastic for them. Unfortunately, if your primary source of movies are streaming services like Netflix and stuff, it's not nearly as useful because they crop the image for those services. :<

I was very very surprised when i played Rainbow Six Siege because of the support i has for the Ultra widescreen. UI fits well.

There's a Chrome extension for 21:9 Netflix.

That's not the problem tho. The problem is that a lot of the movies on services like Netflix and HBO GO are not in the original aspect ratio anyhow. Many of them are edited to be 16:9 with picture removed from the sides.

Related: But the amount of officially uploaded trailers on YouTube that have black bars on them is insane. Especially when they're from the same source. The first Star Wars teaser as well as the theatrical trailer are both uploaded incorrectly, but the second teaser is uploaded correctly and fills a 21:9 monitor.

Just bit on the LG 29". My question is what are your guys thoughts on the limited freevsync range? Is it an annoyance? I have a r9 390 but am worried about going over or under the sync range.

has anyone been able to get the origin version of mirror's edge working? it's in flawlesswidescreen but the fix doesn't seem to do anything - i can only get stretched or letterboxed.

Ah, gotcha. That does suck.

I just confirmed with my online retailer (Swedish inet.se) that my Acer Predator Z35 is being sent out to me today. With normal delivery times it should arrive on wednesday or thursday. How fun that Star Wars week will also be ultrawide week for me!

Sounds great! Please post your impressions, and if you see the pixels due to the resolution being too small for the screen size.

Just got my X34, BLB is good and no coil whine or dead pixels, but it cant seem to do 100hz without flickering, 95hz works fine. Wonder if I should roll the dice on another panel..

Replace it! You payed for 100hz. I returned mine because I didn't like the BLB on the first and got a second, everything so far is good.
