Star Citizen surpasses $100 million dollars in funding

It looks like someone dropped 100k on the game in the last few days which is bonkers if you ask me.

Backers don't get profit sharing, right? Just in game rewards?

I found a nice video that showcases all the features in Alpha 2.0

Give it a watch if you still have no idea what Star Citizen is.

Yup, only in game rewards, apart from the game itself of course.

Impressive.

One thing that bothers me is with that kind of crowd funding, didn't they already exhausted any potential sales in the future no?

There are plenty of people that will never consider crowdfunding. This is why you see all these kickstarters campaigns using it to gauge customer interest in order to get funds from elsewhere.

It's about 1.1 million backers right now. That's certainly less than it could potentially sell so we'll have to wait and see.

So people are still buying ships for this thing?

They didn't implement a Patreon-type monthly backing thing? I could understand that people were willing to invest significant amounts of money for a new Chris Roberts space-sim, but this level of support is mind-boggling.

Makes Broken Age's $3 million look like lemonade stand money.

Dont forget Mighty 9.

It's either gonna be the biggest success story of crowdfunding or the biggest disaster story.

Either way, I don't intend to ever play this game but nonetheless due to its scope and how it can potentially affect the crowdfunding scene it is such a fascinating thing to watch progressing.

Maybe he is one of those people that wants the game to be boats in space?

Plenty of those i guess, altho sure there is loads of work to be done still in all areas, but dancing around an asteroid and zipping between rocks in the field is just such a joy, exploring some unknown signal and arriving just to get ambusehed by pirates, then fight for your life, ohh my 2-3 hours left at work can´t wait to get back into the verse and crash some more.

The average backer amount works out to about 100$.. around the amount of a game + season pass

This is for community content, weekly shows etc. If you go to their youtube page you'll see reams and reams of videos.

That isn't part of the game's budget? I'm not finding a Patreon for Star Citizen.

I guess I'm surprised they're still attracting new backers, then. I guess as more parts of the game become playable more people want to get on board.

That budget is all going just for development, this was why they started the subscription stuff. It isn't done through Patreon, they have the infrastructure to handle it all within their system/site.

Hopefully this is enough money so they can start work on the game.

I think it's funny that they cut a brand new trailer for The Game Awards and it was almost immediately forgotten/ignored. I don't think I've heard a single podcast or recap of the event that even mentioned it.

I mean that still sounds like a hell of a thing to me. Do we know what the average ownership rate is on season passes?

There was a trailer during TGAs?

I'm not joking. I must have missed that. Maybe I went to go pee...

The trailer was really forgettable, nothing you'd miss if you've seen any video of alpha 2.0 on YT.

I gave up on this game when it turns out the game has a kickstart2win mechanic with the lifetime ship insurance. I missed out on it, so if I get into a space fight with someone who backed the game, I have everything to lose but the backer has kickstart2win insurance.

I am assuming that this game is like Eve Online, of course.

You'll be able to buy insurance as well and they will only have lifetime insurance for their Kickstarter ships afaik. My guess is it will be closer to Elite where you pay a bit of money to get your ship restored which turns out to really not be that much at all.

I really don't think you need to worry about it but you can of course decide for yourself closer to launch. I definitely wouldn't completely write it off atm due to the insurance mechanic.

One other thing to consider is that in EVE the insurance is only for your ship so if you have a bunch of expensive mods on there you still have something (and often a lot) to lose even taking out the ship price.

Yeah, in SC LTI only covers the hulls. Any upgrades you add won't be covered. They'll probably skew the insurance costs that way. They have repeatedly stated that LTI isn't that important. There are also other mechanics to discourage callousness with ship condition.

they just sold a $30 ship that had life time insurance.. P-72 ARCHIMEDES.

most of the ships have a limited amount of insurance which i believe can be extended by earning in game money from missions, mining, transport.

I remember Chris Roberts saying he was keen to bring SC to PS4. Have there been any developments/announcements on that front?

I don't see that ever happening this generation, maybe next generation. I don't see how they could possibly downgrade the game enough to run reasonably on consoles and still keep the original vision and structure of the game intact.

Amazing. If this game comes reasonably close to realizing its full potential it might just be the last game I ever play as it will consume my free time completely.

Not even one. Chris Roberts also never said that.
My bad, it looks like he only said there was the "potential" for it to happen, and that "Star Citizen will always be primarily a PC game."

On PS4 support:

“And even then it would only be contemplated as a port from the PC, not the other way around plus we would require a financial commitment by Sony to make it happen,” he added. “If some of the coolest features or peripherals don’t make it because the PS4 can’t handle it we would never gimp the PC version.”

“So fear not!”, he concluded. “The PC is the platform of Star Citizen. Anything else, if it happens at all, will just be after the fact.”

Apparently they do have a PS4 dev kit, for what that's worth.

With this case its a large possibility. Kickstarters are more often used as a proof of concept to prove to investors that people want the damn game.

This is far too ambitious to actually get released. Happens every time. The game developers will lose interest, simple as that.

When a game, even in it's 2nd gen Alpha state is playable AND the player can now start to see with their own eyes what the developers are going for in the bigger picture, IT'S A REAL GAME.

Happens every time?

Care to post some examples of the historical precedent of 100 million fully kickstarted PC only high-end space sims?

It is OK. I can wait.

SC makes me really happy I built a pc this year. Happily spent more than the average.

I need to pick up a 360 for two last gen sports games, but other than that I'm extremely content with my decision to move away from console gaming to build a Star Citizen PC.

I'll probably need to upgrade from my GTX 970 within the next 16 months though. 2.0 is making it scream in pain already.

There is a huge difference between launch WoW and Star Citizen universe dreams.
I am pretty sure any and everyone who actually follows the project know they view SC as a decade long project where there is a lot of post-1.0 plans.

In fact, chris roberts mentions this nearly every 10 for the chairman when people ask about more obscure game features.
