It plays a pretty important role. It basically returns the Galaxy to the days of the Empire. The Republic Government just got annihilated along with potentially trillions of lives and now all the good guys have left is what the resistance can muster.

Really curious as to why Coruscant was abandoned as the seat of government

In terms of cinema viewing, it screams "third time's the charm!". I'm sure they could have handled it differently.

i disagree, a totally overwhelming destructive weapon goes a long way toward making the bad guys a problem that need dealing with.

also the pure spectacle of its firing, tracking the laser, and the planets destruction was really cool.

Yeah, this felt kinda weird too. I mean, in the context of the movie why is The Resistance even called The Resistance? In the OT the Rebellionnwas called that since they openly rebelled against The Empire who pretty much ruled the galaxy. In TFA The First Order doesn't rule anything, they are basically terrorists.

So what does the Resistance resist? The First Order? If so, why doesn't The New Republic also do something about them? Why isn't The Resistance just a part of The New Republic?
 
I had Han Solo dying spoiled for me in a Hearthstone stream of all places lol, so I decided to just look at the rest of the spoilers.

The ending sounds cool as a setup but it's going to be weird having just Luke and no Han for the next chapter.

Her scenes are so awkwardly rushed. Like what even happened near the end there? Chewie grabs her, she doesn't fight back, they talk about throwing her down the garbage chute and then... nothing.

It's gonna be really hard to redeem that character after such a lame introduction. What a waste of a great actress and design.

A protagonist being charming and of the highest moral character despite living in cruel conditions their entire upbringing and/or being orphaned at a young age is practically Disney's calling card.

Yh I mean it did make the bad guys more menacing but you're right it could certainly have been handled differently, it did feel at that point like JJ was really going full on New Hope. I mean you had the message to the droid, father son role reversal, important old man dying lol, the new death star, these are just a few off the top of my head while half a sleep. All that said I did still enjoy the film.

How many Disney protagonists have been subjected to a lifetime of cult indoctrination by an organization that thinks the problem with the Empire was that it wasn't evil enough?

My problem with Hux was that he's played by Domhall Gleeson, who I really like, but he's not cut out at all for a villian. In Black Mirror, Ex Machina and In Time he plays slightly oblivious, but innocent, sweet guys. Here he's supposed to be a threatening, scary general but I just couldn't take him serious in that role. I think I would've preferred it if they had switched around Domhall and Oscar Isaac, who has proven that he can play an intimidating and kinda scary role in Ex Machina.

Well, I give it a free pass too. Not because it's Star Wars but because it doesn't really matter in the big picture, it was just kinda weird.

It really lacked background for that stuff. I thought it was implied that the New Republic and the First Order are at peace/have a truce and part of the Republic "secretly supports the Resistance". However, the film never really suggests the First Order controls more than the snowy planet.
This was something ANH did a lot better. "The last remnants of the old republic have been swept away", "fear will keep the local systems in line", etc. Short, simple lines (combined with the Death Star, of course) that speak volumes as to how powerful and massive the Empire was.
 
This film kind of did to The Force what the prequels did to lightsabres. It made it feel perfunctory.

Rey's on-the-fly mastery of the force as it became necessary was something that irked me quite a bit.

It didn't make the force seem like something one had to work to become attuned to. Luke's concentration with the rocks and Yoda or his blind lightsabre training with ObiWan seems pointless in the face of Rey's 30 second game of Jedi training pickup.

In a lot of ways the state of the Galaxy is like it was in SWTOR MMO. Republic and Empire are at "peace" but element on both side push and manipulate for war. Obviously here the First Order is buildings its power while it lets The Republic play peacekeeper and demilitarizes. Leia and others are having none of that though. Key elements of the Republic are undoubtedly helping Leia and her forces which is why The Republic has to die to reduce Resistance support

This bothered me too but my theory is she was trained at a young age before being abandoned on Jakku. I don't subscribe to the theory she's a Skywalker but I think perhaps Luke trained her when she was young. Something happened? perhaps Kylo Ren turning to the dark side was the catalyst? and she was left on Jakku to protect her?

I'm hoping that will be explained in Episode VIII, guess we'll have to wait 2 years to find out but I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt that it wasn't an "I know kung fu" moment.
 
2 things.

1. The music was pretty bland, which was really dissapointing. Star wars is pretty known for their amazing music. The only that stood out, were the small pieces of the old music.

2. Why doesn't anakins force ghost pop up by Kylo and say, "Hey, I'm not actually bad anymore. it was a bad thing. I shouldn't have done it. Oh and check out my dance moves!" or something :P

What shots? I thought the movie lacked striking shots, the best ones probably being on Jakku with the crashed Star Destoyer. The final duel lacked something too I felt and that forest didn't look snowey enough. Same with Game of Thrones, they have so many snow shots and it looks kinda like snow but the lighting isn't right, the graininess isn't right and the way it covers vegetation isn't right. I don't know if they shot in real snow or not like in Empire, but my feel is they didn't.
 
New Republic sounds like its run by a bunch of idiots.

Empire built 2 god damn planet destroying moon bases and somehow this New Republic doesn't have a flashlight up the ass of the First Order making sure they aren't doing crazy shit like I dunno...building planet destroying moon bases again. Maybe I'm applying too much real world logic to this but it just comes of as ridiculous. Its like allowing the Nazi party to rebuild itself.

That doesn't make sense because she clearly tells Han that she thought all the talk about the Force was a myth.
 
Love the movie, appreciate the light exposition. That can be explain slowly.

There's hints that Ren and Finn were friends right? Probably a padawan who was Ren's friend and the only one he didn't kill during the massacre.

But JJ said they're basically "what if remnants of the Third Reich went to Argentina?". In that case, why would the Republic be at peace with them instead of crushing them for good?
In the movie, however, the Resistance "throws everything they've got" and it's still a very modest offensive.

What's odd is that a single, short meeting from each side would've been enough to explain a lot. One with Leia and the Resistance leaders, one with Hux pretty much like Tarkin's in ANH.
Instead we got the extremely heavy-handed Nurember Rally, which was basically the only jarring scene in the film to me.

It was basically the same way in the old EU. Mon Mothma and them were ideologues who wanted the republic back to the way it was even if it meant leaving the flaws in place. Imperial technology was not to be used since it was reminders of the Empire etc. Republic benefitted from the heroes hiding shit like a Super Star Destroyer from the leadership instead of letting it be destroyed.

Here the heroes just operate outside the Republic with Elements of the government very likely supporting them.

She's strong with the force :P

Seriously I do think that putting force powers with character arcs works well and her arc was just a little sped up.

I know Kylo Ren was injured but I found his fighting ability to be underwhelming in the end. Like even Finn managed to land a hit. Rey I can somewhat buy but man her midichlorians must be through the roof to manage that without training :)

I wouldn't be surprised if it was simply done so that the we didn't have to see the CGI 'mess' that was Coruscant.

I really do hope we get to see Coruscant eventually in one of the films. I hope they are not planning to avoid any mention of the prequals.

As for the Death Star Planet, I loved it. A new take on a beloved design. It needs to be over the top. The Empire have always need to control thousands of star systems and what better way to do that then something that can blow a planet up in a second.

Should make Ep 8 interesting as where a good chunk of Ep 8 is Luke training, here it seems Rey doesn't really need it.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to say they built her up as a cool character.
She had a somewhat eyecatching armor design and walked with a bit of swagger in one of the trailers. My feel is that people are talking about her because they expected to talk about her. That said I suppose it's possible she survived, but the freaking planet blew up too you know.
 
What I also don't really like is how Abrams/Kasdan have wrote Luke into a corner for Johnson. First I thought well, Johnson is getting quite a bit of freedom but he has to come up with quite a good explanation for his disappearance.

I know the most obvious one would be guilt. But that would go against the character so much. He's the one that was willing to sacrifice himself to turn his father back to the light. And now we're getting the idea that he's went into hiding because his cousin killed everything he built. The other logical explanation is that he's protecting someone, which is where Rey comes in.

Lor San Tekka knew Ben before he became Kylo. I think he even knew Luke, and I don't think it is a coincidence that he has the final piece of the map which just happens to be on the same planet where Rey is.

Han's death scene is so perfect. He thinks Kylo is reaching out to him to help him change his ways, but really, his conflict is "I don't wanna kill you, dad, but I'm gonna".

Kylo is a great villain and may even surpass Vader depending on how the sequels turn out.
