Mafia III - 12 minute gameplay demo

At gamescom this year.

And I'm with you, GAF: I just miss the feeling. This looks just some "Ghettoganster"-Stuff like GTA, not true Gangsters with Honor and decency. :/

There a lot that I like here, and it looks like something I can have fun with. The setting is great, the art direction and lighting are very strong, I like the focus on interiors and public hotspots (though nightlife in NOLA should be a bit more raucous), I like the narrative set up.

BUT, as I felt when they first showed off this footage months ago, I think they're leaving a lot on the table by going with this over the top style of action rather than making it raw and a bit more grounded. There's a version of this game that's gritty and intense without the gratuitous kill moves, without Saints Row car chases. Something that feels heavy and of the era, reminiscent of those serious 60s/70s crime thrillers rather than a bloodthirsty, exploitation style revenge story. There's a potential Peter Yates / Don Siegel / Sydney Pollack take on open world games waiting to happen here.

Something seems incredibly 'off' with that shooting. Maybe its the camera or the angle of his arm... whatever it is, it didnt grab me.

Setting looks nice though.

I can't stand Ryan whatever his last name is. Him alone is the reason why I avoid IGN altogether. Hope this is a good game though.

Best wishes.

This is the same exact footage they showed way back when except a longer version of it. Looks pretty good for it being so early. The same exact things that happened in the B roll they released are shown here.

Between many of these comments and IGN video player, I have now lost interest in the game.

You chaps have a great evening.

I forgot about how the reveal of this game brought out the same kind of idiots that San Andreas did. "Honorable gangsters" (A.K.A White). Lol.

"We want you to feel like a stuntman in a Hollywood action movie"

Urgh.

Mafia was so fucking good, so low key. Even when things got hot it was still grounded, and you appreciated it all the more.

Now it's just another GTA clone.

I like how they talk about the MC being able to shoot with either his left or right hand because of his military background.

But he's shooting one handed? I know next to nothing about shooting guns, but I assume you're much more stable shooting with two hands.

The setting feels pretty unused, not really a fan of the gameplay though. Especially the driving looks nothing like you'd expect it from a Mafia game.

1:35 "So, this takes place about two thirds into the game"

lol what? had to stop the video right there, I mean the game's not even out and they're showing off the final segments?

Absolutely nothing with this game is appealing to me! Mafia 2 is light-years away from this abomination...bring back previous setting and continue the darn story!!!

looks like a fun time. barely played mafia and never played mafia 2 so maybe that's why i'm not getting what the issue with the gameplay is?

Pretty much, as much as I wanted to like Mafia 2, it sucked so bad, while Mafia 1 is really really special game for me.

I was thinking more about how this actually looks a lot like Mafia 2, I don't know if there was some way to play the game without wasting a million dudes that I didn't notice about or if people's memories are off.

Well said Net.

Damn, they retained the great hit reactions from Mafia 2.

And now the location-specific damage like shooting the gun hands or legs to go for a melee takedown. At least this means I'll enjoy it as a pure shooter like that game.

Looks awesome

Love me some sandbox games
Man the executions. Some guys are from 2k Marin
Which did red dead redemption so I know this game will be cool. Hope the map is as big and with lots of interiors.

Turn the Michael bay explosions down a bit and I think it looks good. Car handling looks sus been when isn't it in open world games?

Love the setting and the look of it but so far the gameplay just isn't pulling me in in these showings. Needs that unique gameplay hook.

Well it has a criminal syndicate system. According to the Game Informer cover story, the drug den mission can be completed in a non-violent way by blackmailing the hideout boss into turning everything over to the player. Every hideout has a unique set of rewards based on which lieutenants are given control, and how you chose to divvy up/rebuild your criminal empire. This effects what abilities are available to the player and has narrative consequences. To max out a skill set you would require you to stick with one character, while ignoring the other two.

While this looks fantastic and I'm going to buy it, why can't they take gameplay cues from Mafia? It's better than Mafia 2 (some of the stuff)

Was this leaked before? They mentioned it being shown behind closed doors but I could swear I've seen that footage before.

Looks pretty good. Animations when shooting handguns seems off, though maybe it's because I'm not used to seeing one handed shooting in games.

The walking animation seems a bit too tense as well. I'd rather have the more relaxed walking animations of AC or GTA.

Everything else looks nice though, especially the close combat kills.
